Chennai: In probably the firstconcerted effort to make T Na-gar pedestrian-friendly, a reportwill be submitted to the Chen-nai Corporation on Friday.

The report on ‘T Nagarpedestrianisation and redevel-opment project’, prepared byJones Lang LaSalle Meghraj andTownland Consultants, will pro-vide a comprehensive picture ofthe problems and solutions.Putting existing pedestrianspace to better use and creationof more space are likely to bethe highlights of the report.This, the project aims to achieve,through repositioning of hawk-ers and preventing haphazardparking of vehicles.

“The aim is to provideamenities to all, and our top pri-ority is to make the area pedes-trian-friendly and ensuresmooth traffic flow,” said cor-poration commissioner RajeshLakhoni. “There are five stake-holders in the area under sur-vey and the objective is to ad-dress their many concerns,” headded. The methodology for theimprovement and redevelop-ment would factor in concernsof the residents of the neigh-bourhood, shopkeepers on Us-man Road, shoppers who are notresidents of the area, auto driv-ers, hawkers and staff employed

in the thousands of shops. Theproject will cover an area of 6.85sq km, added Lakhoni.

“Random surveys of thestake holders would be con-ducted before a blueprint is pre-pared,” said K Phanindra Red-dy, managing director and CEOof Tamil Nadu Urban Infra-structure Services Limited.“Jones Lang LaSalle Meghrajand Townland Consultantswould conduct wide ranging sur-veys,” he added.

Emerging as a key commuterarea, T Nagar has witnessed ex-ponential growth; hundreds ofthousands of people passthrough the area every day. “Theflip-side to living in an area withgood access to all your needs isthe higher vehicular movementand greater noise pollution. The

relentless movement of peoplehas made living and commut-ing in the area a stress-filled ex-perience,” says K Padma, a res-ident of the area for 15 years.Even as a number of infra-structure facilities such as fly-overs, and traffic modificationshave taken place in recent years,the burden of development isstill a challenge, said officials.

“The project offers to exam-ine options for a more holisticsolution,” said Lakhoni. “Evenpolicy suggestions and a para-digm shift would be explored, ifsuggested by the consultants,”he added. The idea of area-spe-cific redevelopment evolved inthe city over two years ago, withChennai City Connect, an NGOand entities such as ChennaiCorporation working in tandem.

Chennai: A youth posing asa practitioner of occultconned an elderly coupleand escaped with 14 sover-eigns of gold jewellery fromtheir house in the ElephantGate area on Monday.

According to the police,Hyder (24) of Bhaktha-vatchalam Colony in

Vyasarpadi, a week ago metSivagami (65) and her hus-band Govindan (70) at theirhouse of Seven Wells. All ofthem had met earlier, too.The couple spoke abouttheir problems and Hyderdevised a plan to cheat them.He went into the puja roomand “performed” a puja. Hecame out after some timeand claimed that some evil

spirits were plaguing them.To drive them away, he said,a special puja had to be per-formed.

Accordingly, Hyder cameto their house early on Mon-day morning. He preparedfor the special puja and thenbegan chanting loudly. Af-ter an hour, Hyder askedGovindan to go out and stayin his room. He then askedSivagami to keep her jewels

in the pujaroom sothat thespirits act-ing on her‘mangalsu-tra’ couldalso be driv-en away.S iva g a m iobeyed, re-moved allher jewelsand placedthem on aplate.

After afew min-

utes, he asked her to remainin the puja room while hesprinkled holy water all overthe house. When he did notreturn and she realised thatHyder had escaped with 14sovereigns of gold jewellery,Govindan lodged a com-plaint with the Seven Wellspolice who registered a caseand launched a hunt for theaccused.

HC refuses tointerfere withIPL schedule

Chennai: The Madras High Court has refused to in-terfere with the IPL’s season-3 schedule, and has re-jected a plea which said that the event overlappedthe board examinations for SSLC and plus-two.

Dismissing a PIL filed by film producer Hennryon Tuesday, Chief Justice HL Gokhale and Justice

V Dhanapalan, askedthe authorities con-cerned to consider therepresentation.

Hennry said theIPL’s March to Aprilschedule overlappedthe board examina-tions, and it would af-fect the students’preparations. Besidesseeking a stay on the

schedule, the petitioner wanted the court to directthe IPL management and the state to frame guide-lines to regulate and monitor sports activities in thestudents’ interest. This is the second PIL filed byHennry, whose first petition was disposed of by thecourt on February 17 with a direction that he sub-mit a representation to the authorities. He then ap-proached the BCCI and the IPL. Since there was noresponse from them, he filed the present petition.

The first bench, disapproving of the BCCI’s standthat the state did not have jurisdiction over the is-sue, said the authorities should pass an order, be-fore conveying the decision to the petitioner. “Ifthe Centre is of the view that the representationdeserves to be rejected, it may reject the same with-out issuing notice to the BCCI. But it must first takesome decision on the representation, and that de-cision should be communicated to the petitioner,”the judges said.
