President’s Welcome – Hubert Bennett, Newton County
Welcome to the 2010 Georgia Student Information Systems (GSIS) Users Group Conference! We are glad that YOU are here. In these economically turbulent times, you and your school system chose to invest your time and money into the continued improvement of your school system. We are thankful that you chose the GSIS Conference as the place to receive valuable information. I can assure you, we as a Board have worked very hard to reduce the cost of the conference but at the same time to bring you the BEST Conference ever. We are thrilled with the lineup of Breakout Sessions that are on hand. We are honored to have such a HUGE entourage of the DOE and other State Agencies in attendance. Bob Swiggum, Deputy Superintendent, has provided great support of the GSIS Conference and his staff has promoted the conference many, many times through the year. We look forward to an even greater involvement between the DOE and GSIS. We are thankful to have the American Red Cross (Savannah Chapter) represented, Georgia Student Finance Commission, State DOE Special Education. The economic hardships not only affected School Systems, but they have affected many of us personally. It has even been a drain on many of our Sponsors & Vendors, so we are very proud of this year Sponsors: Bridgeway, Crosspointe.net and Infinite Campus. A special thank you goes to our volunteer presenters. This conference simply would not be possible without them! Please take a moment to thank those who have volunteered their time and consider presenting yourself at your next GSIS Conference. If you have any questions or concerns during the conference, would like to volunteer to present at the next GSIS conference, or are interested in service as a GSIS board member, please feel free to see any current GSIS board member. You can identify us by the GSIS shirts that we will be wearing throughout the conference. Hubert Bennett GSIS President

Bob Swiggum – CIO Georgia Department of Education
Hi Everyone,
I join you today in “The Challenge of Change” as my professional life has gone in a new exciting direction. After Spending 20 years leading Information Technology efforts in the private sector, I recently began my new position as the CIO at the Georgia Department of Education(GaDOE). Although it’s a big change for me, I couldn’t be more excited about the future of Georgia’s Educational system. We have a lot of work to get done in the coming months as we ramp up our Longitudinal Data System, integrate more innovation into the classroom and find technology-based solutions that can help Georgia’s schools and school systems do their jobs better, faster, and economically. To meet these challenges, we must bring all stakeholders to the table so we can share our ideas and inspiration. I am looking forward to tapping into the knowledge of Georgia’s instructional technology experts, and I value your honest feedback and wise counsel. I know that, together, we can take educational technology in Georgia to the highest levels so that our students have the tools and the knowledge they need to be successful. Thank you for all the work you are doing now and the work we will do together in the near future and beyond. Sincerely, Bob Swiggum Deputy Superintendent for Technology Services/CIO, Georgia Department of Education
