T ERRAZZO

Terrazzo is a composite material poured in place or

precast. It comprises of a mixture of marble, quartz,

granite, glass or other chips and a binder that can

be cement or epoxy. Terrazzo is cured, grounded,

and polished to the desired evenly polished or

textured surface

W h a t i s T e r r a z z o ?

Terrazzo was created several hundred years ago in

Europe when Venetian workers discovered a new

use for discarded marble remnants.

15th-century Venetian mosaic workers began to

use odd-size marble chips to surface the terraces

around their living quarters.

H i s t o r y o f T e r r a z z o

Gifted craftsmen brought the Terrazzo concept to

America with them in the late 18th century, where

terrazzo was used extensively in monumental

structures. Soon American Terrazzo was created

from the wealth of marble in the United States and

American ingenuity advanced installation

techniques.

T y p e s o f T e r r a z z o

A nominal 1/4" or 3/8" thick resin matrix placed on

level concrete slab.

Unlimited colors, color control, chemical resistant,

multi-colored designs and patterns, light weight

and flexible for multi-story use.

E p o x y

Lowest maintenance cost, quickest pour to grind

installation time.

E p o x y

A nominal 3/8" thick polymer modified cement

matrix placed upon concrete slab.

Fast installation and moderate price range

Good to use in areas subject to moisture vapor

transmissions.

P o l y a c r y l a t e

Terrazzo with a non-ground textured surface for

exterior use. Available with sand cushion, bonded,

structural and monolithic systems.

Infinite variable textures, colors and patterns

suitable for a weather-resistant or skid-resistant

surface.

R u s t i c

The best cement system. Cement materix topping

underbed with wire reinforcing isolation sheet and

sand layer for interior floor use.

Sand layer absorbs minor substrate defects and

helps prevent mirroring to the surface. 2.5" to 3"

including a 1/2" terrazzo top.

S a n d c u s h i o n

Cement matrix and underbed system for interior

and exterior areas where conditions require 1.25"

to 1.75" of recessed depth to be filled in addition to

1/2" terrazzo topping.

With sand-cement underbed, less dependence on

concrete slab for flatness.

B o n d e d

1/2" thick cement matrix veneer placed upon

provided concrete slab, on grade or below only

Fast installation and most economical where time

and budge are critical but where beauty, low

maintenance and performance of terrazzo is

desired.

M o n o l i t h i c

Prefabricated custom units for steps, bases,

planters, benches and wall panels

Custom finished thickness and weight

Unlimited uses

P r e c a s t

-Thin veneer at 3/8-1/6" thick

-More flexible, lighter-weight, and more resistant

to cracking

-Offers the largest color palette in virtually

unending chains of matrixes and aggregates

-Life cycle of Epoxy Terrazzo is rated at 75 years

-Has one of the lowest overall life-cycle costs

C o n s i d e r a t i o n s o f E p o x y T e r r a z z o

-Requires low vapor transmission substrates

-Fast track projects should have a moisture vapor

system

C o n s i d e r a t i o n s o f E p o x y T e r r a z z o

-Very economical

-Long life cycle

-Many colors still available with pigmented cement

C o n s i d e r a t i o n s

-All types of joints must have divider strips

-Planning required during initial slab pour

C o n s i d e r a t i o n s

o f M o n o l i t h i c T e r r a z z o

-Quick installation

-Reasonable price

-Thin veneer at 3/8"

-Useful in places that non-breathing floors cannot

be used because of vapor transmission

C o n s i d e r a t i o n s

-Some limitations in regards to color and strips of

joint.

C o n s i d e r a t i o n s

o f P o l y a c r y l a t e T e r r a z z o

-Bonded system less dependent on concrete for

flatness tolerances because of sand bed

-Excellent choice for renovations and additions

where large recess must be filled

C o n s i d e r a t i o n s

-All substrate joints must mirror through Bonded

Terrazzo

-Cadillac of Cement Systems

-Terrazzo is completely independent of substrate

-Joint limitations much less than rest of Terrazzo

types

-Less cracking because Terrazzo is independent of

substrate

C o n s i d e r a t i o n s

-Available for any cement system

-Weather and Skid Resistant

-Infinite combination of colors and textures

C o n s i d e r a t i o n s o f R u s t i c T e r r a z z o

-Unlimited uses

-Can be veneer or part of the structure

-Absolutely endless color possibilities

-Pre-manufactured so little to no mess

-Able to hide substrate defects where poured-in-

place and other veneer systems cannot

-Most units not fully dependent on substrate
