What is Computer Network?

• A Computer Network is a system of interconnected computer and the peripheral devices.

• For example, it connected to computer, scanner, printer, and camera.

• A computer network is a telecommunication network that allows computers to exchange data.

• The connection between networked computing devices are established using either cable media or wireless media.

Types of Computer Network

There are three types of computer network these are:Local Area Network(LANs)A Metropolitan Area Network(MAN)Wide Area Network(WANs)

Local Area Network(LAN)• A LAN is a Local area network and is defined as

all devices in the same broadcast domain.• It works within campus or building of up to 5 km.• Its speed is 10mbps to 100mbps.• It is smallest network compared to the other two

networks.• The simplest form of LAN is to connect two

computers together.

Metropolitan Area Network(MAN)• It is between LAN & WAN technologies that

covers the entire city.• It uses similar technology as LAN.• It can be single network such as cable TV

network, or a measure of connecting a number of LAN’s a large network so that resources can be shared LAN to LAN as well as device to device

Wide Area Network(WAN)• WAN consist of two or more Local Area

Network(LANs).• Computers connected to a wide-area• Network are often connected through public

networks, such as telephone system.• They can also be connected through leased

lines or satellites.

LAN

Advantages : Hardware & Software can be shared. All the users work can be stored in a central place. Data can be shared because database files stored in

the server are available to users around the network.Disadvantages:

Printing can be slow, long print queues may develop. A virus can spread more easily. As data is shared there is greater need for security.

MAN

Ph. No. :9729666670,4000670 Website: www.batracomputercentre.com

BATRA COMPUTER CENTRE Email: info.jatinbatra@gmail.com

Advantages: It provides a good back bone for a large network and provides

greater access to WANs. The dual bus used in MAN helps the transmission of data in

both directions simultaneously. A MAN usually encompasses several blocks of a city or an entire

city.Disadvantages:

More cables required for a MAN connection from one palace to another.

It is difficult to make the system secure from hackers and industrial espionage(spying) graphical regions.

WAN

Ph. No. :9729666670,4000670 Website: www.batracomputercentre.com

BATRA COMPUTER CENTRE Email: info.jatinbatra@gmail.com

Advantages :WAN has no limit of area, so it is world wide

network.Multi country’s organizations have facility to form

their global integrated network through WANFor a network database, WAN

allows users all over a networkto access and update a single consistent view of data.

Disadvantages:WAN is very big and complex networkIt is slow in speedWAN is not very much secured means not reliable. It is costly because we have to pay every time for

transferring data.Very much dependency on the third party because

it is public network.

Star Topology• Most common Ethernet network topology

where each device connects to a central hub or switch.

Hub• A device used with the Universal Serial Bus or

in a star network topology that allows multiple device connections.

BATRA COMPUTER CENTRE Email: info.jatinbatra@gmail.com

Switch • In star networks, a Layer 2 central controlling

device. A switch looks at each data frame as it comes through each port.

BATRA COMPUTER CENTRE Email: info.jatinbatra@gmail.com

Ring Topology• Network that is physically wired like a star

network but, logically in a ring; passes control from one device to the next in a continuous fashion using a special data packet called a token. Used in Token Ring networks.

BATRA COMPUTER CENTRE Email: info.jatinbatra@gmail.com

Bus Topology• Network wherein all devices connect to a

single cable. If the cable fails, the network is down.

Ph. No. :9729666670,4000670 Website: www.batracomputercentre.com

BATRA COMPUTER CENTRE Email: info.jatinbatra@gmail.com

Mesh Topology• Network where all devices connect to each

other by cabling to provide link redundancy for maximum fault tolerance. Most likely in WANs.
