The Landscape
My idea for the landscape was looking at man made landscapes and the environmental
effects of these. I looked at industrialized landscapes and how the land is being used now
and what effect the industrial elements have had on it, because many of the industrial
places had closed down and left unused wasted land.
- Man made landscapes
- Waste land
- Industrialized landscapes
- New developments
- Land contamination

Brookland lake test shots
These Photographs could have worked quite well although I felt that they didnt relate to my
idea well enough and I felt that they was almost to subtle for the kind of industrial destruction
of a landscape that I was looking for.

The scale ofBurtynskys
photographs and use of colour in
this particular photograph showsthe damaging effects that humans
are having on the natural landscape
and the scale of the image suggests
the scale of the issues and
problems humans are causing on
the environment.

I first went to visit this site, as it was an old closed down quarry from cement works, I was
interested in capturing a picturesque image as the lake there was a striking blue colour from thechalk sill reflected from the sides of the quarry, but subtle hint at the industrial changes to the
landscape, but when I got there the whole site is completely surrounded by 8 ft high fencing and
barbed wire and caged bridges to prevent entrance into the site and to protect people from the
steep drop on the other side. Although this made me begin to rethink my idea and include the
fencing and constraints of the landscape within the image.

Germaine krull
Krull photographed the city through
large structures from above this links
into my idea of photographing thelandscape through the fencing,
although this seems more of an
overlook from above where my
landscape is more about being trapped
behind the fencing and kept away from
the landscape.
Joe Deal, San Fernando, California, from the
portfolio the fault zone, 1978
I looked at deals work as a visual reference as you can see
the tire tracks from vehicles that have drove across the
landscape and cut right through the natural form of the
landscape.

suggest that the place is inaccessible.

- I planned to incorporate the fencing within the
photographs to show how cut off the landscape is
- I experimented with the different types of fencing that
surrounds the quarry
- I also experimented with what was in focus such as the
foreground the fences or the back ground the lake The
Landscape.

- In this set I was focusing more on the structure of the
industrial bridge and just getting the landscape in
focus in the back ground, although the landscapeitself is also man made, you see the harsh differences.

Final Photographs
I really like the idea of having the fence in focus and the landscape out of focus as it
highlights the idea of the landscape being locked away, restricted from view and also the
harsh rusting fence highlights the harsh effects industrial factories have on the environment.
Although I didnt want to use this as a final as the fencing is not straight and the lens seems
to have caused some distortion at the edges.

This Photograph shows the seclusion of the landscape from the footpath and how guarded it
is from view. I decided not to use this image as I wanted to still see the landscape within the
photograph.

In this photograph I showed a lot of the bridge but also the pumps and machinery that goes
into the quarry lake, showing the not so natural landscape, and also the discarded pipes and
rubbish left around. The caged in bridge gives a feeling of a dangerous landscape that was
man made.

This was one on my final photographs as you can see all the layers of fencing that are slightly
out of focus then you can see the landscape through them quite effectively as a Landscape
photograph.

I choose this photograph as you can see the structures of the bridge and the harsh industrial
side of the landscape, that looks so picturesque but is in fact a man made and quite
dangerous landscape. I angle the camera down so as you can see the tyre tracks around the
quarry and discarded industrial rubbish.

Self evaluation
- Could have looked at more places to photograph, but I felt that this site was good enough
- I would have liked to have done more research on the general topic and found more
places but just looked into this one place specifically.

The City
- The history of London docklands and the new developments in the area.
- The cultural history of the once busy docklands full of people working on the docks, ships,
cranes and warehouses in comparison to what the area is like now.
- Business area full of financial offices, shopping centers, excel (exhibition center east
London) and The London City airport, all build on the old dock themselves.
- Old warehouses turned into luxury riverside apartments.
- There's still hints of the past around the area.
- Looking at the new developments and old shut down buildings.
- My concept is finding old building that show the character of the place it used to be but to
also show the new industry of the docklands area. Also exploring the idea of the new
industries being just as environmentally unfriendly if not worse than previously.

Rut Blees-Luxemburg
The concrete structures of blocks of
flats, pavements and roads are all
photographed at night andLuxemburg uses the ambient lights of
the city to illuminate her
photographs, so the majority of them
are very yellow toned, creating this
feeling of surveillance and being
watched although there is no one inher photographs it very much about
the spaces that people share and
suggests at what goes on there.

- Was trying to capture the paths of the airplanes to show
the amount of planes coming in and out of the airport toshow the sheer amount of noise and air pollution caused
by them.
- Couldnt work out exposure times would like to make
double exposures of several airplanes paths emphasize
the amount of plains going in and out.
- The photographs from across the river show the canarywolf and other buildings all lit up against the big old dark
building on the left which is a closed down factory but a
listed building so cant be knocked down. Shows the new
against the old.

- Looking at the old industrial buildings against the new
structures in the area.- Was a really grey rainy day. Didnt turn out very well,
had rain drop on lens and also very foggy.

I felt that this image showed my idea well, as
you can see the old cranes from the docks that
have been kept as a reminder of the history of
the area, but you can also see the cable cart in
the back ground and an airplane coming in to
land at the London city airport. These
photographs almost look black and white this
also references to the old, coming into the
new. The foggy grey day also suggests a
mournful mood.

I chose this photograph as you can see the new DLR train line in front of the old factories,
although they are fading out of focus because it was such a foggy day.

I chose this photograph because of the old spillers factory and the new luxury riverside
apartments. The problem with this photograph though is that it would be better taken on
a large format camera as you really need the movements to get the perspective right as I
this photograph the chimney looks as though its falling over the apartments are also
leaning inwards so it would really benefit from being taken on large format camera.

Self Evaluation
- Didnt manage my time well and didnt leave myself enough time to get the city shoot
done or developed to a good enough standard.
- Did a lot of research on the area and topics, that informed my work a lot more andhelped with my ideas.
