FROM THE PRINCIPAL ANZAC DAY 2016 Please take a few minutes to look at the Anzac Day Service photos contained in this Cooee. They collectively show what a lovely service it was. This very im-portant day on the School Calendar was a great success due to the efforts of all involved. The individual reports given by students from Prep to Year 6 historically traced not only events relating to the history of Anzac Day, but also the battles of the Western Front 101 years ago. This was followed by a new “Local Interest Segment” during which a detailed overview was given by Emily Waters (Year 4) of the life and contributions of her Uncle, Flight Sgt Leonard Waters (Dcd) and some brief reflections by guest, Daphne Gossow who also represented the Wa-ters family. Sincere thanks go to all students for their respectful behaviour, our School Lead-ers who did a fabulous job, the Year level representatives who provided well-rehearsed reports (clearly supported by class teachers and parents) and all at-tending parents, guest speakers and guests who donated library books. Congrat-ulations are also extended to Zandra Rackemann and the Year 4 and 5/6 singers for their touching rendition of ‘Flanders Fields’ and ‘The Anzac Day Song’. Once again, the floral Anzac Cross featured an array of fresh flowers from stu-dents so meticulously arranged by Shelley Ward and Lorilee Briggs. THANK YOU QUOTA TOOWOOMBA Last Friday, 22
nd April, we welcomed QUOTA president, Mrs Jeni Neary and her
team of QUOTA volunteers along with Sergeant Brendan Ryan, Snr Constable Rob Edwards and Constable Katy as well as Mr John McVeigh to our Prep Ted-dy Bear’s Picnic. QUOTA Toowoomba are running the QOCKA reading program with our Prep students this term. Each child in Prep was presented with their very own book and a second copy of the book was donated to the school library. Once the children received their story, they then had some time to read it to their teddy bear. The children were very excited about receiving their book and thor-oughly enjoyed reading them to their teddies. This is a wonderful project where the QUOTA members, together with a Police Officer will come every Friday to read each child’s story to them. The children are looking forward to this. A very big thank you to QUOTA Toowoomba, our local Police Officers and Mr
McVeigh for their time and for bringing this project to our school with the aim to
support our children with developing their love of reading and books.
Until Next Week

FROM THE DEPUTY PBL (POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING) MATTERS The Value for this week is, “Acting Responsibly” with a focus on, “I come to school every day on time”. We are all very aware that “Everyday Counts” and it is also very important that students arrive on time each day (before 8:45am) and with the necessary equipment to ensure a successful day. This ensures that students’ learning is maximised and there are little to no interruptions for the class teacher. Setting a regular pattern of events in the morning can impact on how smoothly and happily everyone gets
ready for school. Here are a few ideas that other parents have found useful which can save a lot of last minute
headaches and fuss:
The night before:
Have adequate sleep – ensure your child goes to bed at a reasonable time
Check that your child’s school clothes are clean and ready for the next day. Encourage them to place their
shoes with their clothes in readiness.
Are there any additional activities happening (e.g. sport, library?) Have your child place the necessary
items in their school bag.
Lunches can also be prepared or semi-prepared. Children can help with this.
Bags can be packed (don’t forget hats!) by your child and placed in a regular spot ready for the next morn-
ing.
In the morning:
Using an alarm will ensure everyone is out of bed with plenty of time to get ready.
Be positive! Grumpy parents make for grumpy children. Encourage and give positive feedback.
Provide a healthy breakfast e.g. Cereal, milk, juice, water, toast, fresh fruit etc. Kids are like cars …they run
(behave and learn) better on good fuel.
Encourage children to get ready by themselves: cleaning teeth, brushing hair, packing school bag, making
bed, helping them only where needed.
Leave the house on time. Setting the kitchen timer can be a help here. Tell the children that when the alarm goes you will be leaving for school; make sure you are ready yourself! A special thanks to all parents who take the time each week to sit down and talk to their child/ren about the
week’s Value and focus. If any parents have any queries or concerns or wish to discuss anything, please feel
free to contact Mr James Leach (Deputy Principal) on 46 368 333.
“Remember - every day counts, every minute counts” SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS Wednesday afternoon last week saw a gregarious group of students settle to learn one of the world’s greatest games, Chess. Les Lord, president of the Toowoomba Chess Club, has graciously given up his time and energy to train a new genera-tion of our EAL/D students to battle each other on a chess board. The students were eager to learn, and loved the lesson, which will be followed by five more and culminate with a class competition.

Due date for orders is Wednesday 27 April. SING OUT 2016 At the end of this term, the 5/6 singers will be involved in SING OUT. Sing Out is a non-competitive Choral Festival for Upper Primary School Choirs and is held once every two years. The highlight of the festival is a concert which is given by choirs from about 15 schools who combine to perform in a massed choir of about 800 singers. Each choir is also invited to perform an item at the concert. For the concert, the 5/6 singers will be expected to wear their choir uniform which consists of long black pants, long sleeved white shirt (boy style) and black shoes. The subsidised cost for each student to participate in Sing Out will be $5. Permission notes will be sent out within the next week with further details so please keep an eye out for that. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM – FANFARE 2016 This term, the Concert Band has been entered into Fanfare. Fanfare is the biennial statewide festival for bands and orchestras in Queensland state schools. It showcases the outstanding music making that occurs in school ensembles across the state. It is a fantastic opportunity for our students to perform and to listen to other school bands. Notes about this event will be handed out this week so please keep an eye out for them.
