COLOR DEFINITION-A sensation aroused in the human mind in response to different wave lengths of light.

LIGHT-the source of colorno light = no color

changing light = changing color

HUE -refers to the name of a color

COLOR WHEEL-hue organization, color is placed on the wheel according to mixing relationships.

Primary Colors-RED, YELLOW and BLUE. Primary colors cannot be made and are derived from nature. All colors can be made by mixing primary colors. Also called a TRIADIC

color scheme.

Secondary colors-colors created by mixing two primary colors. Red+Yellow=Orange Red+Blue=Violet

Blue+Yellow=Green

Tertiary Colors-colors created by mixing one primary color and one secondary color.

WARM COLORS- Red, Orange and Yellow. Warm colors are exciting and tend to push FORWARD in space.

COOL COLORS- Blue, violet and green. Cool colors are calming and recede BACK in space.

COMPLIMENTARY COLORS- Colors opposite on the color wheel. When mixed they darken. When placed side by side they brighten.

• WHITE-reflects all light rays- absorbs none-sum of all colors

• BLACK-absorbs all rays-reflects none-absence of all color

• GRAY-partially reflects all rays-impure white

TINT-color mixed with white. Lightens value of hue. For example red mixed with white creates pink.

SHADE-Color value altered by black

TONE-COLOR VALUE ALTERED BY GRAY

Palette1. Describes the color scheme of a painting

2. Object used to mix paint

Analogous -color scheme that uses adjacent colors with a single color in common. Creates a harmonious feeling.

LOCAL COLOR-The actual color of an object.

MONOCHROMATIC- color scheme with variations on ONE COLOR.

Picasso’s Blue Period was a series of paintings done in a blue monochromatic color scheme. Paintings were created in response to Picasso’s friend’s suicide. These paintings were done during Picasso’s early starving artist period. The paintings depicted struggling down and

out people in symbolic shades of blue.

Degas was an Impressionist painter that used pastels to explore layering and mixing colors in a new way. Pastels are chalk sticks with pigment and binder.

Degas used pastels for sketches and finished works.

Henri Matisse was the founder of the Fauves (Wild Beasts)These artists dismissed local color and used color solely for

expressive and decorative reasons.

Georges Seurat-French 19th c. Post-Impressionist painter credited with inventing pointillism. Took a scientific

approach to painting by understanding that color is actually blended by the eye. Used a broken color technique by

painting dots of color.
