Title “CNN Student News” (April 1, 2016)

Context Intermediate/Young adults (high school and university students)

Time 60 minutes

Aim By the end of the activity, students will be able to effectively demonstrate comprehension of a CNN news clip about trade between China and North Korea by identifying the main ideas and key details of it, as well as by providing a clear and concise summary.

Materials A CNN Student News video and text: http://edition.cnn.com/2016/03/31/studentnews/sn-content-fri/index.html A picture of Chinese and North Korean leaders

Pre-listening 1. Prediction: Based on the picture below, what do you think the news clip will be about. Share your ideas with a partner.

2. Warm-up questions: How do you feel about North Korea? How much do you really know about the country? Do you trust media reports about what goes on in North Korea? What is your opinion of Kim Jung-Un? Do you think that the Kim dynasty will ever collapse or come to an end? Would you like the two Koreas to be reunified one day? Do you think this will ever be possible? Why do you think China is the only country in the world who is willing to do significant trade with North Korea? Do you think the relationship between the two countries will remain strong? Discuss these with your partner. 3. Lexis: With your partner, determine (without your cell phones, only brain power!) if the definitions for the lexical items are true (T) or false (F), and then bet between 0-100 points based on your degree of certainly or level of gambling risk (e.g. F/75).

economic lifeline ____/____ a means of financial support levied against ____/____ impose a tax, fine or other fee on funneled to ____/____ taken away from sanctions ____/____ penalties harassment ____/____ aid or help chronic ____/____ infrequent

During-listening 4. Listen for the main idea: Listen to the news clip and identify the main idea by answering this question – What is the primary message that the reporter is trying to impart or communicate? Afterward, discuss what you think with your partner or group members. 5. Listen for detail: Listen to the clip again and answer the following questions (to include taking notes as necessary). é What is the economic lifeline of North Korea? é What has impacted North Korea’s relationship with China? é Why are North Korean trucks mostly empty when driving to China? é What does the reporter say is near impossible to do? é What remains chronic in North Korea? Why? 6. Listen for inference: China has been criticized in the past for not enforcing sanctions. But, for this latest round, the country says that it will strongly implement them. Do you believe this? Why or why not? Share your thoughts with a partner – which should include information from the news clip. 7. Summarize: If after telling a friend that you just watched this video, and they asked, “What was it about?,” how would you respond? Would somebody like to share his or her summary with the class? What do the rest of you think about that? Fairly accurate?

Post-listening 8. Questionnaire: With your partner(s), pretend like you’ve been given the opportunity to ask ten questions to Kim Jung-Un about North Korea – who has vowed to answer honestly no matter what the subjects (topics) are. At least one questions should be about trade or the economy. What would you like to ask? 9. Letter: You have been assigned a North Korean pen pal – an ordinary citizen who you know is suffering from poverty and hunger. Think about what you would like to say in an introductory email or letter, and then write it.
