RABBI AMY EILBERG DISCUSSES “FROM ENEMY TO FRIEND: JEWISH WISDOM FOR NAVIGATING DIFFI-
CULT RELATIONSHIPS.” PAGE 4
Rabbi’s Reflection
T his summer has been an especially
difficult one. It was hard to really relax
as we normally do since our attention
was focused in July and August on the
disturbing events unfolding in Israel and Gaza. Our
hearts go out to our people who experienced
devastating losses. At least 64 soldiers were killed and
hundreds wounded serving bravely in the Israel
Defense Forces, fulfilling their duty to counter the
unacceptable threat posed by Hamas and related
factions in Gaza who rained more than 3000 rockets
on the State of Israel. Rabbi Kravitz continues on Page 2.

Wishing You
New Year in 5775
a Peaceful By Rabbi Harold Kravitz

Harold Kravitz,
Senior Rabbi cont. from front cover
I absolutely defend
Israel’s right to end
the assault from
Gaza. I would not be
human, let alone Jewish,
if I did not also feel for the people of Gaza who
have experienced terrible losses. I believe the
IDF made every reasonable effort to focus at-
tacks on those who were responsible for the
rockets. It is clear, though, that the people of
Gaza suffered terribly with many dead and
wounded, and they are dealing with the destruc-
tion of many homes and businesses. Israel can-
not, in fairness, be expected to stand by when
rockets are directed at it and tunnels dug for
attacks. Yet, I believe that Israel will not experi-
ence true peace unless a path is sought for
accommodating the national ambitions of the
Palestinians.
No matter where I was, and at all hours of the
day, I found myself constantly drawn to reports
and articles from all kinds of sources, trying to
keep up with the latest news. This is the first
war during which I have been so acutely aware
of the impact of social media as people used
Facebook and Twitter to get their messages out.
These outlets provided information that we
were desperate to hear, filling in gaps when
sources seemed slanted or deficient. They also
gave us a sense that many others were sharing
our anxieties. On the other hand, I found that
social media left much to be desired. People of-
ten seemed to be more interested in spinning
information to defend their positions than work-
ing to shed light on what was happening or to
deepen understanding. Since people posted to
groups of like-minded friends, social media be-
came echo chambers in which people who agree
with each other amplified their voices, rather
than listening to diverse views with open hearts.
At their worst, social media became a place for
dismissive rebuttals of others’ claims, for name-
calling, and for fury.
By the time you read this message, I hope that
things have settled down and that the month of
Elul, leading up to the High Holidays, can offer us
a time to reflect more carefully on the way for-
ward. The Days of Awe can serve as a precious
time for serious introspection about the situa-
tion in which we find ourselves, urging us to be
our best selves in dealing with each other and in
dealing with our adversaries. Even in this dark
time, especially in times of darkness, we must
conduct ourselves by the highest standards of
our tradition and never give up our hopes for
peace and well-being for Israel and for all people.

WORD FROM OUR CLERGY
STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Meet Elaine Savick, Adath’s New Nurse
E laine Savick takes over the position of Congregational Nurse from
Debby Jewett, who was our Nurse for more than seven years before
retiring to pursue personal activities. Elaine has 30-plus years experi-
ence. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Marquette Univer-
sity and began her career in Milwaukee. After coming to the Twin Cities, she
worked in the Hospice unit at the old St. John’s Hospital in St. Paul, and con-
tinued in hospice care until her retirement in February 2014. In 1994 she be-
gan home care, and became a clinical manager in 1999 at what is now
HealthEast Care system. Elaine and her husband Mike Hindin were members of Bnai Emet and joined
Adath when our congregations became one. They have two children, Aleks, a social studies teacher,
and Hanna, a certified nurse in pediatric hematology, oncology and bone marrow transplant.
We give her our heartfelt thanks to Debby Jewett for a job well done. Debby was our first nurse,
and the success and development of our nursing program are to her credit.

PERSONAL REFLECTION
O N YOM KIPPUR WE RECITE A CONFESSION KNOWN AS “AL CHET”
that recognizes how we have fallen short. It focuses on sins that may have prevent-
ed us from being the best version of ourselves in our relationships with other people.
By Friday, September 12, please submit, without your name, a personal “Al Chet” on a slip of
paper, completing the sentence, “I have sinned by…” and drop it off in the box at the back
of the sanctuary (for Shabbat) or in the box in the Adath main office (for weekdays).
The clergy will share these anonymous submissions throughout Yom Kippur.
Adath members of all ages are invited to participate. If you have questions, please email
Rabbi Aaron Weininger at rabbiweininger@adath.net.

sociability. This lively group meets once a month from September through May on Mon-
days at 1:30- 3:00 PM in the Adult Lounge, with refreshments. We are discussing a book

Weekly Talmud Study—Weekly Talmud Study with Rabbi Adam Titcher is a
great place to begin learning Talmud, all in English translation. We will focus on Tractate
Shabbat of the Babylonian Talmud. The group will dig into issues such as carrying and
cooking on Shabbat, starting with how to respond when someone puts his hand in your
window on Shabbat! Join us on Wednesday mornings at 8:00-8:45 AM, following daily
minyan. We’ll start in October. Contact rabbititcher@adath.net for the first date.

Downtown Study Group—Join us as we re-launch our Downtown Study
Group, every other week starting Tuesday, September 16, to explore one of the most
difficult faith questions there is: Why would a good God allow evil in the world?
We will look at attempts to address the problem of evil from Biblical, Rabbinic and Mod-
ern sources. The discussions will range from national disasters to individual suffering.
We meet with Rabbi Harold Kravitz at the office of Neil Meyer (Meyer & Njus) on
the 11th floor of the US Bank Plaza, 200 South 6th Street, Minneapolis, about every oth-
er Tuesday at 12-1 PM. Bring your kosher or dairy lunch and join us for thought provok-

Notes
From the
President In July, I had the opportunity to attend
the first ever Women’s League for
Conservative Judaism conference held in
the summer and over Shabbat. We had
four days filled with outstanding speakers
and fantastic workshops that provided
in-depth training and leadership
development.
My proudest moment was receiving the
Jewel in the Crown – Emerald Award.
This award recognizes the Adath Jeshu-
run Women’s League for its outstanding
programs and commitment to strength-
ening Conservative Judaism at home and
in our community. Congratulations to all
of the members of our Women’s League!
We have some unique programs planned
for the coming year and look forward to
seeing everyone at these events. Don’t
forget to complete the interest survey on
the back of the membership form. This
gives us some ideas for programming and
also enables us to match members to
specific areas of interest.
From all of the Board of Directors of
the Adath Jeshurun Women’s League,
we wish you a happy, healthy and sweet
new year.

…Our condolences to their families
We note with sorrow the passings of... Todah Rabah
from Omer
T his has been a
terribly difficult
summer here in
Israel, especially in the south, where we
have been sent running to our bomb shel-
ters as countless rockets have been shot
in our direction, but the most dishearten-
ing has been the tragic loss of life. Some
days, the local authority closed our Ma-
gen Avraham summer camp; but on most
days, thankfully, we were allowed to
open, providing a Jewish summer camp
experience to some 100 children. Not
only was the summer camp able to oper-
ate, but religious services and Kehillah
activities were also possible, thanks to
our bomb shelter, an amazing gift from
our sister congregation, Adath Jeshurun
in Minnetonka. Not only is it a gift of life
as it protects and saves our physical lives,
but an ultimate gift of life, allowing us to
continue experiencing life at times like
this, when the perpetrators of terror
seek to deprive us of our everyday lives,
preventing us from such regular activities
as going out to dinner or to a movie. The
shelter ensures that we can gather to-
gether in our Holy space, where we find a
sense of support and togetherness, a con-
nection with God and with friends, during
such a difficult time. In the spirit of faith
and support, we do our best, especially
around the children, to remain calm and
lighthearted as we gather in the shelter,
singing songs and creating a sense of joy,
safety and peace. When little Noa (2nd
grader) looked up at me and asked “Rav
Yonatan, is everything going to be okay?” I
replied with a smile: “Of course every-
thing will be okay,” and gave her a hug;
she smiled back, which was priceless. I
believed in what I said to Noa because so
many people are engaged in doing God’s
work, providing shelters and improving
Iron Dome. With God’s help and
through our own Holy work, I do believe
that everything will be more than okay.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT
Would You Like to Be a Holy Roller?
O f all the ritual objects that a syna-
gogue owns, its Torah scrolls
(Sifrei Torah) are invested with the
greatest degree of holiness. We at Adath
Jeshurun are fortunate to have many beauti-
ful Sifrei Torah, and they must be properly
maintained and repaired when neces-
sary. The “Holy Rollers” are a group of
congregants who have taken the responsibil-
ity for airing and cleaning our Torah scrolls
and making any repairs that can be made by lay people.
If you would like to participate in this work, we invite you to join the Holy Rollers. No
experience is required – we will train you in the work. For more information or to sign
up, contact Hazzan Buckner at cantorbuckner@adath.net or the Holy Rollers coordina-
tor, Miriam Segall, at segal001@umn.edu or 612.377.3773.
