• Modern planing mills • Two brothers with millimetre precision • Value creation based on renewable resources • About the various Stangeskovene businesses • Sales and delivery terms
Stangeskovene is concerned with quality in all aspects of production, and as a purchaser, I prioritise purchasing timber from the best forest districts in Eastern Norway. This in turn benefits our customers.

TIMBER FOR CONSTRUCTION STANGESKOVENE
SHORT DISTANCE FROM timber to customerQuality products require high-quality raw material. Our sawmills and planing mills are located in one of the best spruce districts in the Nordic region. Slow-growing spruce is a prerequisite for quality production. Due to the increasingly humid climate, we are experiencing a growing interest in our dense spruce cladding. Slow-growing spruce trees have dense growth rings, giving the wood a higher density (strength). This reduces cracks and increases the lifespan of the cladding.
Locally produced spruce timber from our own forest awaiting transport to our sawmills in Eidskog and Aurskog-Høland.

Cladding, decking and construction materials
The cladding is the house’s outer skin, and since the beginning of the 1600s, wood has been the main product in Norway. Wooden cladding has also been the most used product on modern facades.
Exterior cladding
The function of cladding The primary function of cladding is to protect the insulation from rain and mechanical damages. In the old days the cladding also served as the main air barrier in wooden houses, but today this is taken care of by various types of sheet and cardboard. The princi-ple of separate air and rain barriers is called double layer caulking and requires an air cavity between the layers, which is achieved by furring the cladding.
The cladding also plays an aesthetic role and is the construction
detail that affects the building’s appearance the most. Trends change over the years, and most styles have their own cladding types that modern architecture often imitates.
Cladding requirementsToday, spruce is undoubtedly the most common wood species used for cladding. Dense wood with vertical growth rings and the pith facing outwards provides the best quality. Cladding boards from Stangeskovene are delivered with a milled surface.
TYPE OF CLADDING
• Rectangular cladding• Single or double rebate cladding• Cladding with tongue and groove• Profiled cladding• Decorative cladding and cladding with
unplaned edgesThe picture illustrates both vertical and horizontal cladding.

NEW!New and improved surface
Stangeskovene has further developed the surface of all its cladding products. Now the surface is planed into a fine homogeneous structure. The smooth surface provides better protection from the ingress of water than before and a more visually pleasing product.
Cleaved surfaces with saw blade sections are more susceptible to the ingress of water..
Newly developed planed surface with the pith facing outwards provides the longest-lasting cladding.
With ThermoWood and heartwood pine the house becomes part of the natural surroundings.

TIP:
Rectangular claddingshould preferably be fitted vertically. Vertical cladding, lath cladding or inverted lath cladding are examples of fittings using rectangular cladding (see page 20).

ThermoWood is tempered wood for decking and cladding. Stangeskovene produces tempered pine cladding in the “Architect Planer” at Bjørnstad Bruk. The product is a beautiful reddish brown and the
velvety smooth surface gives a nice, warm feeling.
Thermowood- from nature to your home
Many choose to fit this cladding untreated. Due to UV rays from the sun as well as changing weather conditions, factors such as stain fungus will in time make ThermoWood turn grey. Under elevated temperatures of approx. 200 ºC, the raw material dries down towards 0 % humidity, causing the cell structure in the wood to change. Water vapour is then applied, so that the wood holds a humidity level of 6 %. This makes the wood more dimensionally stable, ensuring very little shrinkage and arching and a higher moisture and rot resistance. This product is very environmentally friendly and basically maintenance-free. However, regular cleaning must be expected.

HEARTWOOD PINE - nature’s own impregnation
17
The service building at the Tistedalen Ski Resort is clad with iron vitriol treated heartwood pine with a profile variety called “Femsjø”, with a dimension of 22 x 123.
A few decades ago the forest owner went into the forest and marked the trees based on quality and the need for planks or their purpose. The really old pine trees with lots of heartwood were used as window
frames or cladding.
Stangeskovene produces cladding from heartwood pine to order in our “Architect Planer” at Bjørnstad Bruk. The raw material consists of 90 % heartwood. The customer chooses the finish; traditional stain/paint, iron vitriol treatment or simply leaving the cladding untreated. Over time untreated cladding will turn grey, while iron vitriol treatment accelerates this process. The disadvantage of pine is the resin discharged from the knots. The resin will “bleed” through oil and stain, whereas in solid treatments the resin will be stuck under the paint and may cause the surface film to blister and chip. Such reactions from the knots can be avoided by choosing non-solid treatments, i.e. transparent stain or iron vitriol treatment.
Stangeskovene produces heartwood pine cladding according to the customer’s profile and volume/requirements at Bjørnstad Bruk in Tistedal.

OUR PROTECTIVE PARTNERS
Primed claddingWe have developed our cladding varieties with a planed surface, grooved sides and angled edges to provide a better grip for stain and paint. We use AkzoNobel’s CUPRINOL IP 601 as indus-trial primer on standard products.
AkzoNobel’s CUPRINOL IP 601 is a water-based primer with top-quality alkyd/oil. This product is a waterproof treatment that protects the wood against decomposition due to UV light, mould and algae.
Priming is done indoors under controlled conditions on high-quality wood and with low moisture. Application amounts and other important parameters are continuously checked.
Priming ensures good protection during transport and con-struction and provides optimal conditions for the complete paintwork to function as intended throughout the life of the cladding.
Primed cladding always requires two top coats by brush. It is advisable to apply the first coat before the cladding is fitted.
Cladding with primer and undercoatTo provide optimal protection, the cladding should be treated in three steps: primer, undercoat and top coats. With Cuprinol un-dercoat, the job is almost done and a lot of time saved! The exterior cladding only requires one top coat to be painted by the homeow-ner after it has been fitted.
Paint job completed by the homeownerThe paint job should be completed as soon as possible, and prefera-bly during the first season after painting. Overpainting can be done using products fit for purpose, such as water-based acrylic paint or alkyd-based products.
Follow the recommendations of the paint manufacturer when completing the paint job. Untreated surfaces such as cut surfaces, damages etc. must be treated with a complete paint system, i.e. im-pregnating base oil (substantial amounts), priming and top coats.
Stained cladding (transparent)Stain highlights the structure of the wood and gives it a natural and transparent surface. Stained cladding from Stangeskovene is primed with “Jotun Industry Visir” and “Jotun Industry Trebitt Beis” (stain).
“Jotun Industri Trebitt Beis” (stain) provides solid protection, has strong colour and glass durability and looks great. It is recommended that you apply one coat by brush during the first season of the stain.
Stained cladding comes in many colours following the NCS coding system.

The best protectionFactory-painted cladding provides the best basis for longevity. Primer and/or undercoat applied under optimal conditions giving an attractive result. Fitting is done regardless of the time of year, and the cladding is fully protected from day one. You also avoid shrink lines and overlapping rot.
Save timeFree up valuable time by choosing factory-painted cladding, which gives you more time to coordinate and plan the construction process. If you choose to buy cladding complete with primer and undercoat, you only need to apply the last coat yourself.
Save moneyEven though factory-painted cladding is more expensive, you can still save money overall. The paint job is made easier, buying you more time.
FinishingOnce the cladding has been fitted, you must remember to finish cut surfaces and end sections. The top coat should be applied during the first season. Surface moisture must be below 16 %, and the surface clean and free of fouling.
Factory-painted cladding in the desired colourContact your local builder’s merchant for ordering factory-painted cladding. The cladding is primed and the first coat of paint applied in the desired colour. There is a short lead time for factory-painted cladding from the vendor. Remember to bring the desired colour code when ordering the cladding.
What do we stock?Stangeskovene stocks most cladding varieties in primed white, as well as most common cladding varieties in primed white and with a white undercoat. Factory-painted cladding in other colours has a very short lead time.
A SMART CHOICE– when building a new house or replacing your cladding
FIRE RETARDING TREATMENTStangeskovene offers cladding treated with fire retardant. This is often requested for public projects in the health and education sector. A separate fire safety certificate is issued as documentation.

Most internal and external products are milled in Tistedal. The panelling mill has been significantly developed in recent years with equipment such as a computer-controlled planer, complete tools for bar code labelling and foiling timber bundles. Internal panelling and external cladding is planed from the best raw materials of spruce and pine on the market.
Most of the speciality products are produced at the project planing mill – often in short sequences. This planing mill is often referred to as the Architect Planer. As our customer, you can have products milled especially based on your choice of profile, and surface treated in the colour of your choice. Other wood species are also milled on special request.
In the cutting facility, materials are cut to exact lengths to the customer’s specifications. In practice, this could be the entire package of materials for a house.
Stangeskovene’s production company, Bjørnstad Bruk in Tistedal, consists of two planing mills and a separate sawing facility.
Master planer Brian Buurskov is preparing tools for special-ity planing to the customer’s specifications.
Production planner Leif Henrik Moen is the customer’s point of contact for speciality planing or reject /2nd sort.
REJECTS- A profitable alternativeOur planing mills practice a very strict quality sorting system. An almost insignificant error or damage means that the plank is sorted as a reject / 2nd sort. Most walls have a door or a window where the plank need to be cut before it can be fitted. Customers who want to clad their walls themselves can save a lot of money by purchasing rejects / 2nd sorts and sort/cut away lengths with small defects. Contact your production planner if you want these products.
MODERN PLANING MILLS
25
Bjørnstad Bruk is lucky in that respect. Brothers Lars and Torfinn Bønøgård have been employed here since they were school boys. Both have achieved their certificates of completed apprenticeship at the mill after working here through all their school holidays since the mid-80s. Lars has risen through the ranks and is now technical production manager, running production at two planing mills. One of his main tasks is sharpening planing tools and setting machines before planing. These kinds of settings are accurate down to a thousandth of a millimetre.
What has made you stay for so long at Bjørnstad Bruk?
“Mainly the great working environment and working in a company with a long-term mindset. No working day is the same. I am motivated by constant new challenges and future-oriented develop-ment of quality products adapted to the customers’ needs.”
Today Torfinn is sales and logistics responsible for the company’s key acco-unts. He has gone from being a sorter at the planer via main forklift driver and production planner. Torfinn still has a hand i both raw material purchasing and determining production plans.
“Yes, unfortunately”, Lars exclaims. We need to try to avoid letting a sales person too far in to the production aspect of the
business, because I am measured based on the number of metres going through the planer every day! “The customer decides”, Torfinn replies, “but I am fully aware that we need to find a balance between production efficiency and delivery time. Our advantage is that our direct contact with the end customer enables us to quickly adapt the products to the customer’s requirements.”
For several years Torfinn has also been an employee representative towards the Executive Board.
– “An interesting job, and very pleasing to have long-term owners”, Torfinn conclu-des before getting into his car on his way to see new customers.
Employee knowledge and interest is crucial for a company to succeed in manufacturing quality products from spruce and pine in a planing mill.

An important principle in the business operations of the company is independent profit centres and extensive delegation of responsibility and authority to where value creation takes place. This has provided a basis for a healthy financial situation, a strong commitment to the workplace among all employees, and a rational and flexible organ-isation. Pride, a sense of ownership in the business and extensive professional expertise characterises our employees.
The forests are the basis of the Stangeskovene value chain, but pro-duction and retail constitute the main part of our overall revenue.
With such diverse activities and varied work tasks, the company
must incorporate a broad set of skills and master vastly different forms of operation – from long-term management of forest and property resources to pure trading activities in a competitive mar-ket. This requires various skills and different types of people, which combined make up a powerful resource both for the company and our customers. As a goods and services provider, we are at our best when we contribute to increased productivity and profitability with the customer, while also inviting our customers and partners to join us in an interesting and stimulating professional environment.
CEOErik Toverud
Stangeskovene creates value based on the renewable resource wood, and we work across the entire value chain; from forest to building. The company has longstanding traditions and the owners’
long-term perspective forms the basis for constant ongoing development.
Stangeskovene AS is the owner and manager of 226,000 decare of forest. Operations include regular forestry, permissions for hunting moose and small game, cabin rental and fishing tour-ism. In addition, external services are carried out for other forest owners in the form of forestry, timber purchasing, silviculture and management of outlying land.
Stangeskovene is joint owner (51 %) of Eidskog Stangeskovene AS (ESAS), in conjunction with Eidskog municipality. ESAS has two sawmills; at the Vikodden and Eidskog divisions. In addition, ESAS has a planing line in Eidskog.
FOREST AND ESTATE MANAGEMENT SAWMILLS
Processing of sawn timber takes place at three planing mills in the group. At Bjørnstad Bruk in Tistedal, the production of panelling, cladding and special products takes place on two planing lines and one cutting facility (precut). K. Kværner at Kløfta produc-es mouldings on two planing lines, while the planing mill at Eidskog Stangeskovene mainly produces construction timber and cladding on one line. In addition, casing is produced by special order for the contractor and industrial markets at Hemnes in Aurskog-Høland. Production at all of the divisions targets the Norwegian marked, mainly in eastern Norway.
PLANING MILLS AND PRECUTYou can find our timber products at selected dealers all over southern and eastern Norway, or in one of our eight fully or part-ly owned retail outlets. Contact one of our sales representatives, and you will be guided to the nearest dealer.
