Collections
The collections, #hich are designated as of national significance "y theUK )overnment, chiefly comprise fine art, te0tiles and #allpapers.
They #ere ac8uired through a series of donations, "e8uests and
purchases since -==+ and ne# ac8uisitions continue to "e added.
7lthough there are important paintings and sculpture in the collections,
the )allery sees itself as primarily a centre for te0tiles and #or4s of art
on paper.
:istory of the Collections
The Whit#orth #as originally intended to "e a museum of industrial art
and design, partly #ith the aim of inspiring and improving
Manchester!s te0tile design and production. 6or this reason, 3ir Charles
>o"inson!s collection of te0tiles #as purchased for the )allery in -=+-.
:o#ever, as #ealthy local collectors "egan to present gifts of British
#atercolors and European prints, the emphasis of the collections
gradually shifted to#ards fine art, rather than industrial design and
crafts. The gift of a collection of historic #allpapers from The Wall
2aper Manufacturers in -+?& to some e0tent redressed the overall
"alance of the collections. No#adays, although some oil painting and
sculpture is represented in the collections /particularly for the modern
period1, the )allery sees itself primarily as a specialist centre for the
study and display of #or4s on paper and te0tiles.
