SITES ATTRACTIONS AND LEISURE ACTIVITIES
You could spend hours just wandering around the streets and canals of Amsterdam and never see all that the city has to offer Here are a few ideas of some ways to really see Amsterdam the way the locals do
Again visit the Amsterdam city site to get information and ideas on everything the city has to offer
CITY CENTER
The city center hosts the majority of the major attractions and you can find all the different options on the city site A few main ones The Bloemen markt ndash the Flower Market ndash located on the Singel Canal is always listed as one of the must see sites However if yoursquore really interested in flowers and yoursquore in Holland between March and May head on out to Keukenhof to really see a show
The most famous part of the city center is probably the Red Light District ndash or De Wallen as itrsquos locally referred to And the locals do go here ndash its chock full of fun laid back bars and pubs and also home to some of the up and coming hot kitchens in the city If yoursquore interested in the promiscuous history of the area you can find more info here
And donrsquot forget the shopping If you want to fight with the crowds but see all the high street shops you want to head to the Nieuwedijkstraat which when dissected by Dam Square becomes the Kalverstraat At the Dam Square you can also find the big Dutch department store the Bijenkorf Here you can find everything and anything The Royal Palace is the main monument at Dam Square and is still in use today ndash visiting dignitaries actually stay here and on the tour you can see the different rooms The Nieuwe Kerk (the New Church) is to the left of the Palace and is the church of the Dutch Royal family
DISCOVERING AMSTERDAM
Most important in the city center are the canals Check out the Grachtenhuis the museum about the canals of Amsterdam and why the city was built as it was but otherwise hop on the canal tours Even the locals say this is a great way to see the city and it really does give you a unique way to view the city There are two main start points for the cruises ndash right outside the Central Train Station and at Stadhouderskade by the Museum District
DE PIJP
Dotted with cafes restaurants and little shops De Pijp located south of the city center is the Latin Quarter of Amsterdam and definitely worth a visit One main attraction the Albert Cuyp market has gained a name for itself over the years as the largest outdoor market in Holland Check out what you can all find there here This market is worth a wander but itrsquos really in the surrounding neighbourhood that the locals say yoursquoll have the best experiences If you want to see what other outdoor markets the city has to offer take a look here
Swing around the corner from the market and yoursquoll come across the infamous Heineken Experience Tourists and locals alike recommend the brewery where you can discover all there is to know about Heineken beer its history and its great marketing campaigns over the years And the two beers included in your entrance fee Definitely makes it worthwhile
DE JORDAAN
Originally the artists quarter The Jordaan lies to the west of the city center It is now one of the most desireable areas of the city Just far enough away from all the crowds of tourists but still full with shops restaurants and of course canals
Shopping is key in this area and the 9 Straatjes or the 9 Streets is where you want to be Technically on the edge of the
Jordaan it is literally 3 streets by 3 streets cutting across 3 canals and in this area you can find all different kinds of shops with plenty of cozy restaurants and cafes in between to allow for plenty of stops Take a look on their comprehensive site to get an idea of what all awaits you
Further south into the Jordaan proper you can find even more shops and restaurants but one place of interest is the Noordermarkt - a weekly organic bio market that draws mainly locals each Saturday to this picturesque square on the canals
AMSTERDAM ZUID MUSEUMS AREA
South of the city center this area is quite large and has just as wide of a scope of things to offer
Shopping Luxury brands can be found on the PC Hoofstraat and surrounding streets Check out their website to see what shops are there
Tours Another neat experience is the House of Bols What is Bols Come on and check it out and get your free cocktail at the end as well Located right on the Museums Square itrsquos a great place to stop off after visiting all the art museums
Relax The Museum Square has all the big museums on its edges and furthermore makes a great place to sit in the sun throw a frisbee or just take in all the tourists taking pictures with the big I AM AMSTERDAM sign Or if you want some more grass and to feel like yoursquore in an actual park head a few blocks up to the Vondelpark
