Circe in Art

Circe– In a few words, describe Circe

– Find 3 pieces of evidence from book X (lines 220 to the end) to support your description

Circe’s Duel Nature (juxtaposition)

– “soft spell” vs. “drug of evil” (171)– “Low she sang in her beguiling voice” (171)– “Here is a young weaver singing her pretty song…adding her own vile

pinch to make them lose desire” (172)– “singing before her loom a chill, sweet song” (172)– “Goddess or girl the could not tell” (172)– “She stepped through the shining door…like sheep they followed her,

but I saw cruel deceit” (173)– “She will infuse to charm your sight…when she turns cruel” (174)– “mixed a golden cup of honeyed wine adding in mischief her holy

drug” (175).– “your dangerous bed” (175)– “flawless bed of love” (176)– “the loveliest of goddesses replied” (180).

Claim

• a proposition (interpretation) stated or put forward for consideration,

especially one to be discussed and proved

• When we make a claim, we are asserting a view point about a text.

• A claim is a statement that you put forth that is original, arguable, and provable.

• It is not too vague, yet not too specific that you cannot discuss it.

• It takes into consideration all of the parts (components) and how they function (what they mean) as a whole.

Analytical Essays• Sometimes you may have to write about

multiple texts• Create an introduction that references both

texts• Create a claim that encompasses both texts• Use supporting evidence in body paragraphs

from both texts• Do not use personal pronouns! Write it, don’t

announce it. (I think the best representation is….) (The best representation is…)

Practicing with art as a “text”

• Look at the following paintings that have been created of Circe.

• Write an intro paragraph and an outline of two body paragraphs that answer the prompt:

Which painting of Circe is the best representation of her based on your understanding of her through The Odyssey book X

Essay Introduction-multiple texts

• Introduce the main text (specifically what part of the Odyssey?)

• Introduce the second text (Circe in art)– Is she depicted the same in all the paintings?

Thesis statement that includes both texts and your main point

Body Paragraphs

• Include a topic sentence• Bulleted list of the evidence you would include in that

paragraph

• 2 options: One paragraph about each text and the way the portray Circe or one paragraph about one aspect of Circe and how they are similarly portrayed in the book and the painting and another paragraph in the same format about a different characteristic of Circe
