Chordata Reptilia

By Emily Lamb, Spencer Lutz, Madison Walsh, & Brittany Tanner

Classification

Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Subphylum: Vertebrata Class: Reptilia

Characteristics

Ectotherms Tough, waterproof skin covered with scales Hard shelled eggs Strong jaws Lungs, no gills Carnivores, and herbivores

Advantages

Internal fertilization Well developed jaws Energy- require less than warm blooded animals Amniotic eggs

Disadvantages

Ectothermic Requires more care then fish or amphibians Few eggs produced

Evolution

Originated around 340-335 million years ago, in the late late Carboniferous period

Evolved from advanced reptile-like amphibians that became increasingly adapted to life on dry land

Oldest reptile known = Hylonomus Small, lizard-like Insectivorous diet

Evolution

Originally overshadowed by bigger amphibians Following the Carboniferous Rainforest Collapse,

amphibians were devastated, while reptiles fared well - they were adapted to drier conditions

Acquired new niches and feeding strategies Increased in diversity and dominated communities Mesozoic – Age of the Reptiles

Diapsid and Anapsid are the “true reptiles”

Evolution

Diapsid reptiles split into two main lineages Archosaurs (forebears of crocodiles and dinosaurs) Lepidosaurs (predecessors of modern snakes,

lizards, and tuatara). Both groups remained lizard-like and relatively small

and inconspicuous
