PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello from your President,
Its official the 2016 2017 year is in full swing. The Bears are trying to play football once again, the Blackhawks season begins this month, the White Sox players have departed for their home towns (maybe next year) and last
but not least the CUBS are on their way to the WORLD SERIES! Last month was our annual product show which did not have the best attendance by local engineers. Please let us know what we can do better to give engineers an interest in attending. If anyone would like a subject that would be of interest as a seminar for next year’s product show send me an email and I will make sure that it gets the ut-most attention with the board to review. Remember the product show is for you, the engineer, as well as the manufacturer reps and the products they represent. For those engineers who did not attend you are missing a big part of being an ASPE member. It gives you a chance to see new and innovative products as well as collaboration amongst engineers and reps. that can provide greater insight to their product. The Internet doesn’t always provide pertinent information that may be needed for a type of design or application that the rep can provide. So please come out to our monthly meetings and meet the people who can provide you with added knowledge and information required on your current or next project.
RECAP LAST MONTH
First I would like to thank the following members who took time out of there hectic schedules for the past few months to make last month’s product show possible:
Mark Nasuta
Jason McDonald
Rick Butler
Phil Kroll
I would also like to thank the volunteers the day of the show who took time out of their busy schedules to help make the day a success:
Sean Allard
Emily Koussa
Isaac Koussa
Chris Sbarbaro
Scott Jagodzinski
Natalia Dankanich
Mike Castellano
I would also like to thank all of the presenters for their valued knowledge and experience and taking their time to further educate our members. We will soon be planning next year’s product show and would like suggestions for subjects of interest that would be beneficial to our members. If you have suggestions please email your topic to me at aspe.chicago.president@gmail.com
ASPE NATIONAL CONVENTION

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE CONTINUED...
JUSTIFY YOUR ATTENDANCE
You recognize the value of attending the ASPE Convention and Exposition, but how do you communicate that to man-agement? How do you gain attendance approval from your manager? Refer to the link below for valuable information in making the right decision. http://events.ntpshow.com/ASPE2016/Public/Content.aspx?ID=9363&sortMenu=102006
ASPE SEEKS UNIQUE WATER RECLAMATION CASE STUDIES
Unique or challenging plumbing system designs that helped a facility recycle and save water are sought for possible publication in the ASPE Journal. For more information or to submit your story, contact Director of Publications, Gretchen Pienta, at gpienta@aspe.org.
DID YOU KNOW? There are two (2) common types of smoke detectors used in the fire protection industry that detect smoke and fire dif-ferently. The first is ionization which is more responsive to “fast flame” fires and the second is photoelectric which uses a light beam to detect the presence of smoke. As plumbing engineers these devices are essential to the system that they are applied to. There are differences between the two devices that should be considered when installing them on a preaction system. Coordination should be considered between the electrical contractor and the installing contractor on how the system will be wired. Not only are these devices used in precaution systems they are installed in residential homes, apartments and condo-miniums just to mention a number of different occupancy types. WHAT IS AYP? WHO CAN BE INVOLVED?
The AYP special interest group is designed for young industry professionals looking to meet with peers to share ex-periences, exchange ideas about the plumbing design industry, and network with other chapter members. The focus of AYP is to help young plumbing engineers, design professionals, and practitioners establish contacts and further the mission of the Society.
To receive additional information on ASPE Young Professionals or to sign up to be part of the group, please contact
Pam Rosenberg, ASPE Staff Liaison to ASPE Young Professionals Special Interest Group, 224-217-9016 or prosen-
berg@aspe.org. Please contact Emily Koussa who is our Chicago Chapter AYP Liason. Emily can be contacted at
aspe.chicago.ayp@gmail.com.

ASPE CHICAGO MOURNS THE PASSING OF A LEGEND
Mr. Dick Kivis who worked 42 years in the plumbing industry passed away on Saturday October 2nd with his family by his side. He worked at SOM, Perkins &Will and McGuire Engineers. He was the first to be inducted into the plumbing hall of fame that was introduced in 2015. ASPE Chicago and all the members who knew Dick would like to extend our sympathy to his family and friends.
Water is a commodity and as plumbing engineers, it is our duty and should be our responsibility to keep our population
safe from contamination and other impurities in our drinking water for our children and their children and beyond.
Thank you, Mark G. Mannarelli Chicago Chapter President ASPE.Chicago.President@gmail.com

VICE PRESIDENT, TECHNICAL: TECHNICALLY SPEAKING October Greetings, It is hard to believe that it is already October. Seemed only like yesterday I was frantically trying to get all of the CEU issued from the Chapter Product Show (by the way, if you did not get your CEUs yet, please let me know…some of you have hard-to-decipher hand writing – smile).
The ASPE Convention coming up at the end of the month, which is always lots of fun. It is also a little bit of a home-coming for me, as I was active in the Phoenix Chapter before moving to Chicagoland…I am looking to catch up with old friends. Other than not being home for Halloween (which is probably okay, as I was still undecided on if I wanted to wear my Star Trek or Doctor Who costume), this should be a pretty good month. Thanks to all of you who have provided ideas for speakers and topics for this upcoming ASPE year. We are still look-ing for a presenter for the January meeting, so please let me know if you have a meeting topic you would like to have or if you are interested in speaking. We are still looking for Cocktail Hour sponsors, so please also let me know if you are interested. Our October Chapter Meeting will include a Manufacturer’s Spotlight by Ron Leamon with Spears Manufacturing, which will be on Lab Waste CPVC Corrosive Drainage Systems. Our main presenter will be Mark Hall with Pentair, speaking on Hot Water Temperature Maintenance. His presentation, which will be worth 0.1 CEU, will cover:
Hot Water Temperature Maintenance utilizing heat trace cable technology as an alternative to recirculating
systems.
Ways to conserve water waste by getting hot water faster, and lead innovation opportunities.
Energy savings and installation savings with heat trace systems.
Here is Mark Hall’s bio:
Mark graduated from the University of Houston in 1985. Mark earned his BA in Business Management and currently resides in Pittsburgh with his wife Suzy and he has two sons Steve & Garrett. Mark has developed his knowledge with the plumbing industry from 18 years as an application engineer at Emerson Electric, and 8 years with Pentair Thermal Management. He is currently working under the role of Regional Sales Manager for Pentair Thermal Management.
Until Next Time…

VICE PRESIDENT, LEGISLATIVE Greetings Chicago Chapter,
This past month there were no new amendments to the 2014 IDPH Plumbing code.
IDPH TITLE 77
Despite having the plumbing code so handy on the web site, three are still a few missing requirements hidden under non common section of IDPH. Below are some examples:
Section 900.40 Water System Design Subsections
k) Water Distribution Lines. The system shall be designed to maintain a minimum positive pressure of 20 p.s.i. in all parts of the system at all times. Water pipe shall conform to applicable specifications and stan-dards of the Illinois Plumbing Code (77 Ill. Adm. Code 890) for the type of pipe to be used. m) Drinking Fountains. All outlets established for the provision of drinking water shall consist of drinking fountains in accordance with requirements contained in the Illinois Plumbing Code, or a supply of single ser-vice drinking cups shall be provided. Common drinking cups are prohibited.
Section 905.130 Human Waste Disposal
a) General. Privies, portable toilets, recirculation toilets, incinerator toilets and compost toilets are ap-proved for private sewage disposal of human wastes. Other domestic wastes shall be disposed of in a con-ventional system (see Section 905.30_ Approved Private Sewage Disposal Systems); however, the size of all components, as designed in accordance with Appendix A, Illustration A, may be reduced 25 percent (except that septic tanks may not be smaller than 750 gallons). Note: Compost toilets may be used to dispose of other organic domestic wastes.
g) Compost Toilets (Attention Leed) 1) Compost toilets shall be designed in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations to serve the anticipated number of persons. The owner of a compost toilet shall maintain the toilet and dispose of the contents in accordance with Section 905.170. (Servicing, Cleaning, Transporting and Disposing of Wastes from Private Sewage Disposal Systems) 2) Compost toilets shall comply with the requirements of NSF International/ANSI Standard 41 and shall bear
the NSF International or the approved certification agency seal. There is an entire code section regulating swimming facilities “Part 820” located at:
http://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/admincode/077/07700820sections.html There latest amendments to the State of Illinois energy code can be found at:

VICE PRESIDENT, MEMBERSHIP Glad to see many of you at the Chicago ASPE Product Show on 9/22; For those of you that were able to attend, I have provided some questions below we would love to have your feedback on. For those of you who didn’t make it, we are looking for feedback on what we could do to get you to come out next year.
I would like to welcome the Chicago ASPE Chapter’s Newest Member:
Christopher Macal of Willoughby Engineering
Jake Karl of McGuire Engineers (MEPC)
Morris Lieberman of Irving F. Lieberman & Assoc. Inc
Taylor Shaw of Intellihot Green Technologies Inc.
For those who attended please comment on any or all and email your numbered responses: 1) Attendance – Did you think attendance was good?
2) Venue - Do you like it? Does the location work for you?
3) Seminars – Did you attend any? If so, what did you think? Do you feel the seminars help or hinder the Show?
4) Buffet – Did you get a chance to eat? Did you enjoy it? Do you like that it is included or would you prefer to return to dinner tickets?
5) Bar – We opened the bar earlier (and even earlier than planned based on requests from our Exhibitors). Do you like the cash bar? Would you prefer drink tickets (no guarantees we can make that happen; but, if there is enough interest, we can investigate)?
6) Show Floor – Does the show floor work for you Exhibitors? How about for you Exhibitors who were in the hallway?
7) Show Hours – this year, the show ran from 3:30pm until 8:00pm. What are your feelings on the show’s hours and do you have suggestions for what you would prefer, if different?
8) Announcements – We tried to cut down on our announcement time. Can we get your honest opinion of how distract-ing announcements are? If too much, do you have a suggestion for what you would like us to do instead?
9) Innovative Product of the Year Competition – Was this distracting? Do you have an opinion of whether or not this competition was a success and if we should try it again next year?
10) Exhibitor Door Prizes – Do you enjoy brining door prizes? Do you like the method of giving us business cards with the prizes listed which makes the winners have to walk to you to pick it up?
11) Raffle Tickets – Do you like the prizes that are offered? Do you like that we do a raffle?
12) Other Thoughts – Please share anything else you want regarding the Product Show, past present or future.
Thank you,
Chris Sbarbaro, PE, GPD, CPD, LEED AP BD+C
