THE MAKEUP DESIGNERThis area of theater & film design has really expanded in the past 30 years. •In film and television, makeup designers and artists are employed to apply makeup on nearly all of the actors.

•On stage, there is a long standing tradition of actors applying their own makeup. It is considered a pre-show ritual where the actor begins to get into character.

Recent theatrical shows with more extensive make-up have employed make-up artists to design – but the actors still do the application. CATS is a great example.

Complex makeup, such as that required for PHANTOM OF THE OPERA will sometimes require a makeup artist to assist the stage actor.
