Chapter 10: Cell Growth and Division
Section 10.1 (Pg. 274-278): Cell Growth, Division, and Reproduction
Limits to Cell Size
- Bigger cells have more needs- DNA doesn’t grow with the cell
- DNA must work harder to meet the cell’s needs
- This is known as an ‘information crisis’
- Similar to one library in a big city
Limits to Cell Size
- Exchange of material- Bigger cells have hard time getting
nutrients and removing waste
- Smaller cells can interact better with their environment
- Similar to a small highway in a big city
Cell Division- Cells divide and produces two ‘daughter cells’
- Why divide?- Solves problems related to cell size- Growth and development- Repair and maintenance- Reproduction
Cell Division and Reproduction- Cell division can be a form of
reproduction
- Asexual Reproduction- Is the production of genetically
identical offspring from a single parent
Cell Division and Reproduction- Sexual reproduction
- Is when offspring inherit some of their genetic information from each parent
- Offspring are produced by the fusion of special reproductive cells produced by each of two parents
Comparing Asexual and Sexual ReproductionAsexual Reproduction- Quick (can take 20 minutes)- All offspring can be identical- Requires one individual
Sexual Reproduction- Slow (can take years)- All offspring are genetically unique- Requires a mate
