Studies show that 70% of 18-22 year olds leave the church when they

leave home, and many never return.

Clint Elliott
Some suggest that this is the result of age-graded “church” which robs young people of the diversity of church God’s way – young and old united in the corporate body.

WHY?

Bob Russell, founding pastor of a top-5 mega church in America, recently wrote:

“Our student ministers were often disappointed that so many who had been involved in our youth program were living a

hedonistic lifestyle within three months of stepping onto the college campus. Why is that?

The truth is, it’s very difficult for the church to counter, in two hours a week, the anti-biblical propaganda kids receive all week long from entertainment, education, the media and

sometimes their parents.”

Robin Pendoley, CEO of Thinking Beyond Borders, writes:

“When students arrive on campus as freshmen, they find themselves without the adult mentors (parents, teachers,

coaches, religious leaders, etc.) they relied on in high school. And there is rarely anyone to replace those mentors. They are

surrounded by peers who are also trying to define themselves. This all happens in an environment offering access to challenging social decisions ranging from time

management to drugs and sex. . .

A gap year can help students through this transition and better position them to learn with purpose, direction, and

confidence.”

A former admissions officer at Harvard and current director of college counseling at St. Stephens Episcopal, a college

preparatory school in Austin, Texas, says the results of a gap year are “startling”!

He concludes that many college-bound kids would benefit from taking time off, particularly those who have excelled in

high school but at the cost of burn out from years of honors/AP classes, sports and extracurricular activities.

Approximately 40,000 young adults participated in gap year programs in 2013.

To raise up young people with compassion, character and faith in

Jesus Christ who have the imagination, moral fiber and

tenacity to lead in all walks of life.
