CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Defination Of Employee Welfare
What is Employee Welfare?
Welfare includes anything that is done for the comfort and improvement of employees
and is provided over and above the wages. Welfare helps in keeping the morale and
motivation of the employees high so as to retain the employees for longer duration. The
welfare measures need not be in monetary terms only but in any kind/forms. Employee
welfare includes monitoring of working conditions, creation of industrial harmonythrough infrastructure for health, industrial relations and insurance against disease,
accident and unemployment for the workers and their families.
Labour welfare has the following objectives:
1. To provide better life and health to the workers
2. To make the workers happy and satisfied
3. To relieve workers from industrial fatigue and to improve intellectual, cultural
and material conditions of living of the workers.
The basic features of labor welfare measures are as follows:
1. Labor welfare includes various facilities, services and amenities provided to
workers for improving their health, efficiency, economic betterment and social
status.
2. Welfare measures are in addition to regular wages and other economic benefits
available to workers due to legal provisions and collective bargaining.

3. Labor welfare schemes are flexible and ever-changing. New welfare measures are
added to the existing ones from time to time.
4. Welfare measures may be introduced by the employers, government, employees
or by any social or charitable agency.
5. The purpose of labor welfare is to bring about the development of the whole
personality of the workers to make a better workforce.
The very logic behind providing welfare schemes is to create efficient, healthy, loyal and
satisfied labor force for the organization. The purpose of providing such facilities is to
make their work life better and also to raise their standard of living. The important
benefits of welfare measures can be summarized as follows:
They provide better physical and mental health to workers and thus promote a
healthy work environment
Facilities like housing schemes, medical benefits, and education and recreationfacilities for workers families help in raising their standards of living. This makes
workers to pay more attention towards work and thus increases their productivity.
Employers get stable labor force by providing welfare facilities. Workers take
active interest in their jobs and work with a feeling of involvement and
participation.
Employee welfare measures increase the productivity of organization and
promote healthy industrial relations thereby maintaining industrial peace.

1.2 PROFILE OF THE COMPANY
Exide Technologies is the world's second-largest producer of automotive lead acid
batteries for automotive and industrial applications. The Companys four global business
groups Transportation Americas, Transportation Europe and Rest of World, Industrial
Power Americas and Industrial Power Europe and Rest of World provide a
comprehensive range of stored electrical energy products and services for industrial and
transportation applications.
Transportation markets include original-equipment and aftermarket automotive, heavy-
duty truck, agricultural and marine applications, and new technologies for hybrid vehicles
and automotive applications. Industrial markets include network power applications such
as telecommunications systems, electric utilities, railroads, photovoltaic (solar-power
related) and uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and motive-power applications
including lift trucks, mining and other commercial vehicles.
Exide was founded by W.W. Gibbs in 1888 and was then called Electric Storage BatteryCompany. Gibbs purchased the ideas and patents of inventor Clement Payen to make the
storage battery a commercial product. Gibbs targeted electric lighting companies so they
could use the storage batteries to provide services to their customers.
In 1900, the company developed a product of greater capacity and less weight for elecric
taxicabs. This battery was the first to bear the name Exide, short for "Excellent Oxide".
When the United States entered World War I, Exide batteries were used to operateairplane radio sets and power radio stations. In 1938, Exide acquired Giant Storage
Battery Company, and expanded into battery chargers and testers.
Exide bought out the dry battery business of a company called Britannia Batteries Ltd.

During World War II, Exide was a major supplier of batteries forU.S. Navysubmarines
and primary contractor for batteries used in the Mark 18 electric torpedo.
Exide entered the dry-cell battery industry in 1957 when it acquired the Ray-O-Vac
Company, then the second largest producer of dry-cell batteries in the US. Following the
acquisition of the Wisconsin Battery Company, Exide started producing motorcycle and
specialty batteries. In 1987, it acquired General Battery Corporation.
Robert A. Lutz, former president and vice chairman at Chrysler Corporation, was
appointed Exide's Chairman of the Board in 1998. He reorganized the worldwide
management structure into Global Business Units and sold off non-battery units to allow
the company to concentrate on its primary business. In 2000, Exide acquired GNB
Technologies, a leading North American supplier of automotive batteries. Two years later
Exide filed for bankruptcy after compiling a debt of $2.5 billion as a result of the recent
acquisitions.
Exide is a sponsor of the Cornell Automotive X-Prize Team.
Exide Technologies has signed an agreement to be the sole lead-acid battery supplier for
the REVA (Revolutionary Electric Vehicle Alternative) car-making project in Bangalore,
India.

Storage batteries are basically used as secondary source of power in industrial
applications and four wheelers and two wheelers. Very long back with the scarcity of
electricity the demand for an alternative power supply has also increased. This is
possible through there sources- Generator and uninterrupted power supply.
While small generators started manually the generators of highly capacity need
batteries to start and in case of ups the main source of power is the battery, so the need
for batteries arouse.
In 1920, chloride Electrical storage company (CESLO) U.K set up trading
operations in India as an import house. After few years' battery manufacturing
industries were started in India itself.
Exide industries limited was born in 1946 the factory was set up in Shamnagar
near Kolkata and thereafter over years 8 others units were set up one after the other all
over India.
In 1969 the second factory set up in Chinch wad, Pune and in 1976 R 7D centre
established at Kolkata and 3rd factory was at Holdi west Bengal in 1981 and factory at
Hosur, Tamilnadu in 1997 was set up.
Acquisition of 4 plants through merger of standard batteries was done in 1998.
Now the headquarter of the industry is at Kolkata.

Exide Technologies (Exide) is a provider of stored electrical energy solutions, lead acid
batteries used in transportation, motive power, network power and military applications.
The company primarily operates in the US and Europe. It is headquartered in Alpharetta,
Georgia and employs about 13,027 people. The company recorded revenues of $3,696.7
million during the financial year ended March 2008 (FY2008), an increase of 25.7% over
2007. The operating profit of the company was $116.1 million during FY2008, as
compared to an operating profit of $4.8 million in 2007. The net profit was $32.1 million
in FY2008, as compared to a net loss of $106 million.
Strength
Today, one can say with conviction that our economy is back on track and, in fact, is
recovering very fast to reach the pre-downturn levels. We have weathered the storm with
prudence and pragmatism. This impressive turnaround definitely show-cases the inherent
strength and resilience of the Indian economy in general and of our banking and fiscal
system in particular.
It is expected that the growth story will continue in the near future. Economists are
predicting a GDP growth of 9% for the current year. IMF has predicted a growth of 9.5%.
With the Industrial Production Index scaling upto 16%, it seems imminently possible that
a strong growth is expected in agriculture and in the services sector. India is expected to
be one of the fastest growing economies in the world during the next decade. One feels
proud when the President of United States of America declares that Whenever the
Indian Prime Minister speaks, the whole world listens to him.
In spite of this euphoric growth there are certain major areas of concern. The fiscal deficit
which is presently nearly 7% of the GDP will have to be restricted to at about 4%.
Inflation, especially for food items, is not only hurting the common man but, if not
controlled within time, would lead to reduction in real income and purchasing power
which will have an adverse effect on industrial production. Though food inflation has
started to decelerate and is expected to go down substantially by the end of the third
9

quarter due to good monsoon, it is felt that proactive and stringent steps would be
required to contain the twin challenges of rising fiscal deficit and high inflation whilst,
continuing to provide the necessary impetus for growth.
Weaknesses
AFTER passing through a lean business phase over the past few years, Exide Industries
has come up with a sharp growth in performance for the first quarter of this fiscal. The
share price has also appreciated significantly from around Rs 58 in January to the current
level of Rs 88. Shareholders could use the recent rally to reduce exposures in the
company. Fresh buying may, however, be considered on price weakness.
Exide Industries occupies a prominent position in the domestic storage battery industry. It
has presence in both the industrial as well as the automobile battery segments. It derives
close to 70 per cent of its revenues from automobile segment and the remaining from the
industrial battery market.
Aided by the robust demand (from both automobile and industrial segments), the
company posted a steady growth in earnings during the 1990s. However, the slowdown
in automobile sector, coupled with the global economic downturn, has affected the
performance of Exide Industries as well as the other players. This apart, the liberalisation
of import norms led to a surge of cheaper imported batteries.

Threats
The performance would have been even worse but for the Government's imposition of
anti-dumping duty. This, coupled with a recovery in commercial vehicle segment (since
October 2001) helped the company mitigate the damage to the bottomline. The relatively
flat trend in price of lead (the key input) also helped the company avoid a sharp slide in
operating margin.
However, the company's performance has seen a sharp growth in this year's first quarter.
While the growth in turnover was relatively modest at 12 per cent (to Rs 198.16 crore),
the improvement in net profit was much impressive at 124 per cent (to Rs 8.16 crore).
Much of the growth in earnings is explained by the soft trend in price of lead and other
inputs. This apart, the company has seen a pick-up in demand for batteries used in
inverters.
The growing power shortage in the country (especially in the northern part) appears to
have pushed up demand for inverters which, in turn, has had a beneficial impact.
Considering that the realisations are generally better in this segment, compared to the
automobile battery market, the post-tax earnings have seen a sharp spurt in the first
quarter.
However, the price of lead has firmed up a bit in the recent weeks.

industry. The success of any organization in turn depends to the workers. Who are
working for the organization? So the organization must motivate and retain its workers
for its better productivity by providing better employee facilities. In this context the
study of "employee welfare" has been taken to analyze and evaluate existing welfare
facilities in EXIDE. It is not possible to study all the ingredients/options in such a short
span of 45 days. Therefore I have chosen the employees welfare to study as the title
given is EMPLOYEE WELFARE MEASURES AT EXIDE. The project work is
carried out for 45 days and I have worked as full time management trainee in Delhi. I
have visited number of employees working at the company, the questionnaire, and
formal meeting and normal decision with the clients helped me for collecting valuable
information for the study of measures taken for employee welfare. It is also useful for

RESEARCH AND METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research is a systematic search for pertinent information on a specific topic. Research
is an art of scientific investigation. According to Clifford Woody, Research comprises
defining and re-defining the problem, formulating hypothesis or suggesting solution,
16

collecting, collecting, organizing and evaluating data; making deductions and reaching
conclusions; and at last carefully testing the conclusions to determine whether they fit
the formulated hypothesis.
3.1 Purpose Of The Study
Employee welfare which is understood to include such series of facilities and
amenities may be established in or in the vicinity of undertaking to enable the persons
employed in them to perform their work in healthy, congenial surrounding and to
provide them with amenities conductive to good health and high morale.
The project report title "A study of Employee welfare measures at EXIDE" has
been mainly prepared to know the awareness of welfare facilities and find out the level
of satisfaction by the employees.
The employees should be given more benefits for the work they do. It motivates
them for the work they do. It motivates them to perform well and also leads to
employee morale.
The question that came into my mind at that time was from where will i learn all this
and the answer which i got for this question was in the form of my project title. Since
this is been a good opportunity for me so, I decided to take up this project.
3.2 RESEARCH OBJECTIVE
To know the awareness of welfare facilities
To know the level of satisfaction of the workers by the welfare a facilities
provided by the company.
To get the opinion of employees about the facilitates provided by the company.
To finds out whether statutory welfare measures are being adopted.
To identify any non statutory measures being adopted and obtain suggestion for
their improvement
17
-
8/7/2019 chander proj
18/40
To suggest improvements for better provision of welfare measures
To evaluate effectiveness of welfare facilities in organization
Tools used for Analysis:
The tool employed here is Percentage Analysis. The total of the data collected under
one factor are summed up and their percentage is calculated. Suppose we consider 10
factors with 5 attributes for each factor. Each attribute is given ranks. The values are
added and the percentage for each attribute is calculated. These values are used for
analysis. This is Percentage Analysis.
RESEARCH DESIGN:
A Research design is an arrangement of conduction for collection and analysis of data
in a manner that aims to combine relevant to a research purpose with economy in
procedure. The research designs adopted for the study are analytical in nature.
Its forms are aggregated, manipulated and organized.
Its content is analyzed and evaluated
It is placed in a proper context for a human user
So, information is processed data placed in a context that gives value for the
reader. It is basis for analysis and interpretation. This helps in making note of findings,
conclusions and also helps to give suggestions. So data should be accurate, correct and
clear. If it is inaccurate or not in proper orders the whole output gets affected and it may
lead to confusion.
3.3 SAMPLE SIZE:
18
-
8/7/2019 chander proj
19/40
Sample size refers to the numbers of elements to be included in the study.
The important decision to be taken while adopting sampling technique is the
sample source. In this study the sample size of respondents was decided to be
twenty.
SAMPLING TECHNIQUES:
Random sampling techniques and methods were used during the surveys. People employed
in the firms who were surveyed were chosen at random.
3.4 METHODS OF DATA COLLECTION:
Primary data source
Primary data are those, which are gathered especially for the project at hand is
directly through questionnaire and interview. It is the original source of data collected
by the researcher. The primary data was collected by personally meeting the employees
and through discussion with the HR manager.
Secondary data source
Secondary data sources are generally published sources, which are been
collected. originally for some other purpose. They are not gathered specifically to
achieve the objectives of the particular research project at hand but all ready assembled.
Sources of secondary data for this steady work brochures, company past records,
research books and Internet.
INSTRUMENT FOR DATA COLLECTION:
Personal interviews and surveys through Questionnaires were conducted to collect the data.

CHAPTER 5
SUGGESTION AND CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
Welfare is a total concept, which is durable state of existence comprehending
physical, mental, moral, and emotional health. A person may be mentally brilliant,
morally reliable and even emotionally stable, but as long and his physical health are
poor and neglected his welfare could be physically strong and mentally unsound then
the person will not be able to concentrate in his work. Welfare activities are responsible
to keep a person in a stable condition.
The recent trends the world Labour is loosing its existence and the new concept
workmen show that is emerging so employer should carefully analyses the strength and
form welfare measures accordingly. Considering all the factors it can be concluded that
EXIDE has adopted sound welfare and safety measures for the betterment of the
company and its employees.

SUGGESTION
Survey limited to factory and the head office only.
Findings are based on the assumption that the respondents have given true and
correct information without being biased towards the organization or having a sense of
fear or insecurity.
The survey was conducted generally among the employee category and did not
including people and managerial or executive post, so their opinion was not included at
all.
Though it intended to be 100% employee survey-some employees did not take
part in the survey as their job required them to be in the field, and hence they were notpresent during the time of the survey. Time was the major constraint.
