CH8-1 System of Stratification• Most societies divide their members into

ranks based on selected characteristics, which can lead to social inequality

• Two basic systems exist today: caste and class

Caste System

• Resources and social rewards are distributed on the basis of ascribed status.

Class System

• Distribution of scarce resources and rewards is determined on the basis of achieved statuses

Social Class

• Determined by people with similar levels of wealth, power, and prestige

• Upper Class• Upper Middle Class• Lower Middle Class• Working Class• Working Poor• Underclass

CH8-3 Poverty

• 37 Million Americans live in poverty, or below what society considers to be the minimum adequate standard of living

• The poverty level is determined by calculating the cost of providing an adequate diet.
