• Organized by ITU• Motto: “Open Networks - Connected Minds”

CERN’s presence

July 2009 Wolfgang von Rüden, CERN 3

• Booth of ~20 m2 on the Pavilion “Lake Geneva Region”, organized by OPI (Office des Promotions des Industries et des Technologies)

• Share our excitement about fundamental research• Show the LHC project emphasizing the global collaboration

and related technologies• Underline CERN long-standing role as technology driver in

the ICT domain• Highlight the Grid and the Networks at the service of science• CERN’s role in the Lake Geneva Region

Petabyte Challenge ? An idea

• Demonstrate live the transfer of >1 Petabyte of data from the experiments via the Tier0 to the Tier1s. Is this possible???

• Requires sustained transfer rate out of CERN of 3 GB/s during 4 days

• Show live network activity, instantaneous rates and accumulated data per site plus overall counter visible from the aisle.

• Connect to various sites via VC• Runs from Monday 12h00 till Friday 12h00

Console setup

• 3 PCs running XP• Screens: 5 x 24” & 2 x 46”• Direct 10Gb/s optical link to CERN’s GPN, i.e.

CERN IP address range• Standard Gb ports• 2 IP telephones (CERN numbers)• Tandberg video conference system• Sound system
