variety of physical media interfaces.
To establish connectivity between remote
locations over public ATM networks,
Centillion 1000 switches can be populated
with DS1/E1 and/or DS3/E3 wide-area
interface modules. In addition, because all
modules support traffic shaping, OC-3cand OC-12c modules can be used to
establish high-bandwidth wide area links
as network traffic increases.
The Centillion 1000 multiservice
solutions enable network designers and
managers to select the chassis and location
that best fits their organization's size
and network loading. Capacity can be
increased to support a maximum of
16 OC-12c or 64 OC-3c interfaces, withATM connectivity offered at rates from
1.5 Mbps DS1 to 622 Mbps OC-12c.
As demands on the network continue
to increase, the Centillion architecture
delivers unparalleled scalability. Web-based
management simplifies the administration
of all Centillion 1000 switches across the
network. Graceful congestion control
maximizes traffic throughput per switch,
and support for hierarchical PNNI
virtually eliminates network size
limitations. The Centillion architecture
scales from small branch offices and power
workgroups through to the largest and
most intensive enterprise network centers,
with proven support for networks of
several hundreds of switches and many
thousands of users.

Guaranteeing total availability of
mission-critical information, the high-end
Centillion 1600 and Centillion 1400
switches are ideal for mixed-traffic
environments where voice services must
have total and absolute continuity.
These switches can be equipped withan optional redundant switch
fabric/processor module an industry

BENEFITS
Total AvailabilityContinuous availability of business-critical
information is a key requirement in
enterprise networks, especially where
large numbers of information flows are
aggregated in the network center.
Availability requirements are heightenedwhen the multiservice capabilities of
ATM are leveraged to integrate voice
services with campus and wide area data
networks ATM network equipment
must have redundancy features to equal
those of voice Private Branch Exchange
(PBX) equipment.

Bay Networks understands the importance
of maintaining business information
flows, and is unique in providing total
switch fabric and processor redundancy
in both the Centillion 1600 and
Centillion 1400 network center switches.
Total switch fabric/processor redundancypreserves the integrity of the entire
switching capacity under failure
conditions, ensuring continued transport
for all information flows.
System availability is further enhanced
through the use of fully redundant power
supplies and chassis cooling systems,
eliminating any single point of device
failure. Centillion 1000 solutions feature
passive backplane technology to guaranteefull and straightforward system
serviceability avoiding the extended
downtime inherent when active backplane
architectures experience hardware failures.
Voice service is essential to the operation
of any organization. Only Bay Networks
offers the total system redundancy and
serviceability required to maintain
uninterrupted operation of corporate
PBX systems in mixed voice/data ATM
environments, making the Centillion
1000 switches the logical solution in
mission-critical multiservice environments.
Centillion LAN-ATM technology
also enhances information availability
out to the network edge. The Centillion
architecture supports the establishment
of multiple, load-balancing ATM
connections from the network center to
Centillion 50, Centillion 100, and System
5000BH edge switches, where fast-failover
NNI (network-to-network interface) links
deliver a resilient, fully-meshed topology.
Graceful Congestion ControlThe aggregation of information flows
in enterprise network centers challenges
traditional switching architectures because
the volume of each flow is rarely balanced.
Congestion conditions are encountered
from time to time in even the most
conservatively over-dimensioned networks.
Traditional switching architectures allow
the effects of congestion at one point in
the network to spread and negatively
impact all information flows, particularly
those demanding low latency, such as
voice and video traffic. Lacking a more
graceful means of handling and isolating
congestion, traditional switching
architectures can only mitigate congestion
by the addition of more switching capacity.
This impacts overall cost of ownership and
limits network growth.
The Centillion 1000 architecture is unique
in providing graceful congestion control
through intelligent traffic buffering, a
unique method of regulating data traffic
under heavily congested conditions. This
method of congestion control isolates
overloaded inputs from other traffic flowsto provide an overall increase in traffic-
handling capability, supporting higher
amounts of network traffic without the
need for additional hardware expenditures.
Reduced WAN
Infrastructure CostsAs telecommunications carriers and
network service providers introduce
attractively tariffed ATM services, enterprise network managers are presented
with new opportunities to reduce network
operating costs. Public ATM wide area
networks (WANs) facilitate significant cost
savings by enabling the consolidation of
duplicate or triplicate wide area services
formerly needed to carry data, voice,
and/or video information between
campuses into a single, integrated,
lower-tariffed ATM service. The inherent
multiservice capabilities of ATM makepublic WANs ideal for transporting
interoffice PBX voice, high-quality video,
and data traffic flows. The dramatic cost
savings that result from the consolidation
of multiple traffic streams onto a single
platform are driving the rapid adoption
of ATM WAN services as the interoffice
networking platform of choice.

The Centillion 1000 switch family
provides all of the capabilities needed
to take advantage of these public ATM
services. All interfaces feature wide area
traffic shaping, allowing connection to
public networks at speeds ranging from
1.544 Mbps DS1 through 622 MbpsOC-12c. Circuit emulation supports
direct connection of voice PBX and video
services into the ATM infrastructure,
and extensive Quality of Service (QoS)
queuing and intelligent buffering features
guarantee performance and prioritization,
even over low-speed connections.
Comprehensive
Investment ProtectionAs the enterprise network evolves over
time, cost-effective solutions must be
chosen over those with limited scalability
that will require expensive upgrades. The
Centillion 1000 family delivers a highly
scalable solution that shares a common
software base and interoperates seamlessly
across the enterprise.
As demands on the network grow, capacity
can easily be increased by inserting
additional modules into the switch chassis,
or scaling to higher-bandwidth interface
modules. Advanced features, such as total
availability and OC-12c connectivity, can
either be configured at initial deployment
or added when needed. The Centillion
1000 architecture is also unique in
gracefully controlling the effects of
network congestion to isolate overloaded
inputs from other traffic flows. Traditional
ATM architectures lack this capability,
and require the addition of moreswitching capacity to handle traffic
growth. In contrast, the Centillion 1000
architecture allows information flows to
experience significantly greater growth
before additional switching hardware
is required.

When the growth capacity of an existing
Centillion 1000 switch is finally
maximized, its continued viability is
maintained by either installing an
additional switch to increase capacity,
or by redeploying the switch toward
the network edge. Existing hardwareinvestments are further protected in
this process, because all Centillion 1000
interface modules are fully interchangeable
between the three chassis models.
Interface modules can be deployed across
the Centillion network to maximize
network efficiency and throughput,
and then easily redeployed, over time,
as requirements change and grow.
The Centillion 1000 family also providescost-effective scaling of wide area services
with all interfaces featuring full wide area
traffic shaping. As WAN traffic demands
grow, higher speed interfaces can be
utilized for either campus or wide area
connectivity there is no requirement to
purchase new modules to gain high-speed
WAN support features.
Web-Based ManagementBased on advanced JAVA technology,
the SpeedView 1000 management
application provides an easy-to-use
graphical interface that allows users to
configure, monitor, and manage
Centillion 1000 switches from any
Web browser-enabled workstation on the
network. Multiple layers of security enable
network managers to allow or deny access
to specified users, ensuring the safety
of mission-critical data. A platform-
independent application, SpeedView 1000
can be installed in UNIX and Windows
operating system environments.
Configuring one Centillion 1000 switch
or a network of switches is no longer acomplex series of command line interface
operations. SpeedView 1000 makes
configuration a simple point-and-click
procedure, delivering tabbed windows
to provide quick access to related
configuration settings and status
information. The application automatically
ensures that input values are valid, offering
helpful hints, suggestions, and practical
advice to ensure an error-free configuration.
Access security is a primary consideration
in selecting a management solution.
SpeedView 1000 provides three levels
of secured access, allowing the network
administrators to define the set of
Centillion 1000 switches (if any) that can
be managed by a specific user. Securityis further enhanced by having clients
access switches through the existing
browser/Web server security functions,
such as Secured Sockets Layer, eliminating
direct connections between the clients
and the switches.

FEATURES
Multiple ChassisThe Centillion 1000 multiservice switches
are available in three different chassis sizes,
allowing absolute flexibility in designing
and deploying cost-effective enterpriseATM networks. All Centillion 1000
chassis can be configured with fully
redundant power supplies, and hot-
swappable switch fabric/processor
modules, power supplies, interface modules,
and cooling units can be removed and
replaced without system interruption.
Total Switch Fabric and
Processor RedundancyThird-party ATM switches that do
not provide redundant switching and
processing services, or where overall
fabric capacity is divided among distinct,
nonredundant segments, run a continual
risk of losing all connections or suffering
a significant reduction in overall switch
capacity. This unacceptable risk factor
makes these products poorly suited for use
in network centers where large quantities
of business-critical information flows are
aggregated. Integrated voice services
demand total availability and any loss
of connectivity, or degradation in switch
fabric and/or processing capacity,
drastically impacts the real-time servicing
necessary to support reliable, high-quality
voice transport over ATM.
The high-capacity Centillion 1600 and
Centillion 1400 chassis support total
information availability by providing
single-stage, fully-duplicated switch
fabric/processor modules. When
configured with redundant switching/
processing modules, the Centillion 1600and Centillion 1400 switches guarantee
that the total capacity of the switch is
always available, supporting connectivity
across all ports and ensuring smooth delivery
for delay-sensitive information flows.
Intelligent BufferingIn products without intelligent buffering,
excessive input traffic can cause output
buffers to become congested, resultingin dropped cells. Input traffic and switch
congestion then increases exponentially
as lost cells lead to packet retransmissions,
disrupting traffic on all inputs that are
switched to the congested output. Even
inputs introducing low quantities of traffic
can experience losses. As the switch fabric
becomes increasingly overloaded, the
viability of low-latency voice and video
traffic is disrupted as switching response
times are compromised.
The Bay Networks Centillion 1000
architecture provides both input and
output buffers, breaking the disruptive
congestion cycle by introducing back
pressure from the buffers. By slowing
down the rate at which input buffers
empty into the switching fabric, a moreeven, scalable use of switching resources is
provided. Busy inputs that experience cell
loss initiate Early Packet Discard (EPD),
enabling them to discard all irrelevant
cells or packets, preventing overloading
at the output buffer. This process prevents
exponential increases in switch traffic,
reducing congestion and maximizing
overall system performance and scalability.
By isolating congested inputs andpreventing them from overloading the
network, EPD protects other inputs
from overloading and maintains service
guarantees for delay-sensitive voice and
video traffic.
Private Network-to-Network
Interface (PNNI)PNNI is a topology determination and
signaling protocol that enables ATM
networks to automatically find the
optimum path when establishing virtual
connections. A valuable time saver for
network managers, the protocol
communicates key QoS metrics, including
bandwidth requirements, latency
parameters, delay, burstiness, and jitter.
PNNI scales to support ATM networks
of any size, from campus deployments
to global WANs, and also provides fast
convergence around network outages andsupport for load-sharing, multi-homed
configurations.

Enterprise ATM switches have traditionally
been interconnected with manually-
configured static routes. This is manageable
when network size is small, but as the
network grows and switches are added,
manual topology configuration becomes
increasingly complex and error-prone.
All Centillion 1000 switches support
the PNNI dynamic topology protocol,
as well as conventional static topology
configuration. As networks grow, PNNI
allows switches to automatically discover
and determine connectivity routes
without requiring manual intervention
(see Figure 1).
Centillion 1000 PNNI can also interoperate,
via static routes, with switches utilizing the
Interim Interswitch Signaling Protocol
(IISP), enhancing network design flexibility.
In large network centers where significant
numbers of switch interconnections
are concentrated, PNNI topology
negotiations and updates can consume
considerable processing resources. PNNI
relieves this restraint on network growth
by dividing large networks into separate
hierarchical domains. Centillion 1000
multiservice switches scale to support the
largest enterprise network centers through
hierarchical PNNI.

Full WAN CapabilitiesThe Bay Networks Centillion 1000
multiservice switches provide the
advanced traffic-shaping capability and
connectivity options needed to connect
ATM campus backbones to public ATM
wide area networks. Most ATM LAN
backbones operate in multiples of
155 Mbps (OC-3), whereas public WAN
services are usually offered in smaller
increments, from 64 Kbps to 45 Mbps.In addition, public ATM WANs enforce
traffic contracts to regulate data flows,
while private campus ATM networks
typically do not. To resolve this conflict,
traffic emanating from bursty, unpoliced
private ATM networks must be buffered
and shaped so that it adheres to public
network traffic contracts.
All interface modules for the Centillion
1000 switches provide full ATM traffic
shaping capabilities (see Figure 2),
supporting integrated voice, data, and
video wide area networks at all rates from
DS1/E1 or DS3/E3 through high-
throughput OC-3c and OC-12c links.
Public ATM networks typically offer only
nonswitched permanent virtual circuit
(PVC) services, while enterprise ATM
networks make extensive use of ATM's
dynamic switched virtual circuit (SVC)
capabilities to support changing data,
voice, and video flows. In order to preserve
seamless application and service support
out to WAN-connected remote campuses
or branch offices, circuit switching
must be maintained across the extended
enterprise network. All Centillion 1000
interface modules extend circuit switching
throughout the enterprise by supporting
SVC tunneling through public network
PVC services, ensuring that the benefits
of ATM switching are available across
the network.
End-to-End Quality
of Service (QoS) SupportThe Centillion switching solutions from
Bay Networks support transmission of
voice, video, and conventional data traffic
in campus ATM networks and over
both public and private ATM WANs
(see Table 2). Centillion 1000 multiservice
switches fully support all ATM QoS
classes. Delay-sensitive Constant Bit Rate
(CBR) voice and video traffic is assigned
higher priority to ensure the required
bandwidth and minimal buffering to
achieve successful delivery. Variable
Bit Rate (VBR) traffic has less stringent
delivery requirements, and may be
buffered in output queues. Unspecified Bit
Rate (UBR) and Available Bit Rate (ABR)
traffic is not latency-sensitive, and accepts
best-effort delivery whenever bandwidth
becomes available.
All Centillion 1000 multiservice switchesprovide strict traffic policing services,
ensuring that all flows adhere to their
service contracts so that service levels
across the network are not compromised.
Centillion 1000 traffic management
capabilities include Explicit Forward
Congestion Indicator (EFCI) support,
as well as Explicit Rate, No Increase, and
Congestion indicators in the resource
management cells of ABR traffic.

applications, DS1/E1 and DS3/E3 circuits
are also used to transport high-bandwidth,
low-latency video flows between enterprisenetworks and remote locations. By
consolidating voice and video traffic
with interoffice data flows into a single,
integrated WAN, significant cost benefits
can be realized. However, in order to
achieve a cost-effective, integrated
solution, the DS1/E1 circuits intercon-
necting PBX and video services must be
seamlessly emulated by the corporate
ATM infrastructure.
Circuit Emulation is an ATM Forum
standard specifying how ATM equipment
discerns individual voice or video channelsin DS1/E1 TDM circuits. In addition,
the standard also governs how ATM
equipment assigns these individual
channels to different ATM virtual circuits
via ATM Adaptation Layer 1 (AAL1).
The Centillion 1000 multiservice switches
provide full support for structured and
unstructured DS1/E1 circuit emulation.
Structured DS1/E1 adapts individual
DS1/E1 fractional channels to ATM
virtual channels with specific virtual path
identifiers (VPIs) and virtual channel
identifiers (VCIs). The unstructured
service adapts the entire DS1/E1 circuitto an ATM virtual path. Both structured
and unstructured DS1/E1 circuit
emulation provides signaling bit transport
based on ATM Forum standards such as
Channel Associated Signaling (CAS),
and robbed-bit signaling.

Wide Range of Interface CardsThe Centillion 1000 multiservice
switching solutions provide extensive
ATM interface support, ensuring
complete flexibility in the design and
cost-effective deployment of enterprise
ATM networks. All interface modules
are fully interchangeable across all
Centillion 1000 chassis, support wide-area
ATM traffic shaping, and are fully
hot-swappable.
ManagementThe Centillion 1000 multiservice switches
are manageable by the SpeedView 1000
client/server management application.
Based on advanced JAVA technology,SpeedView 1000 provides an easy-to-use
graphical interface that allows users to
configure, monitor, and manage
Centillion 1000 switches from Web
browser-enabled workstations at any
location on the network. Network security
is centrally controlled by the network
manager, who can use multiple layers of
security to allow access to specified users.
A platform-independent application,
SpeedView 1000 can be installed in bothUNIX and Windows operating systems.
Through its graphical interface,
SpeedView 1000 enables users to easily
leverage the rich ATM functionality
offered by the Centillion 1000 switches.
Configuring one switch or a network
of switches for PVCs, soft PVPs, traffic
management, filter creation, pollingintervals, PNNI peer groups, Hello
intervals, topology exchange intervals,
and ATM other parameters is no longer a
complex series of command line interface
operations. By providing a navigation
toolbar to help users move through the
menu hierarchy, SpeedView 1000 makes
configuration a simple point-and-click
process. Tabbed windows provide quick
access to related configuration settings
and status information. The application
automatically ensures that input values are
valid, offering helpful hints, suggestions,
and practical advice to ensure an error-free
configuration.
Not only does SpeedView 1000 deliver
enhanced ease of use, it also provides ease
of installation. The two components of
SpeedView 1000 the Management
Server and the Browser Client are
installed together on a Web server. Onceinstalled, the Browser Client applets are
automatically downloaded and executed
at the client workstation when needed.
Because there is no client-side installation,
network administration of SpeedView
1000 is more cost-effective and flexible
than traditional client/server management
systems. Software updates are performed
centrally at the Web server, streamlining
the upgrade process dramatically.
Access security is a primary consideration
in selecting a management solution.
SpeedView 1000 provides three levels
of secured access, allowing the network
administrators to define the set of
Centillion 1000 switches (if any) that
can be managed by a specific user. Securityis further enhanced by having clients
access switches through the existing
browser/Web server security functions,
such as Secured Sockets Layer, eliminating
direct connections between the clients
and the switches.
The browser-based capabilities of
SpeedView 1000 software allow management,
monitoring, and problem resolution
procedures to be quickly performed fromanywhere in the network. The application
displays alarms, errors, traffic statistics,
accounting information, and performance
data by using graphics and tables, and
delivers a key management, monitoring,
and configuration tool for multiservice
networks.
For onsite management and configuration,
the command line interface may still be
used. Any VT100 terminal or laptop
running emulation software can be
directly connected to the switch. To aid
troubleshooting, the debug mode allows
proactive tracing of system events to
ensure rapid problem resolution.

ApplicationsAs shown in Figure 3, the Bay Networks
Centillion ATM solutions can be deployed
across the enterprise, from the edge to the
network core. High-capacity multiservice
switching is provided in the network
center of large enterprise networks by the
Centillion 1600 or Centillion 1400
switches, depending upon overall capacity
required. When fully configured, these
switches provide total availability,
delivering full support for mission-critical
PBX phone service, station-to-station
video, and data traffic. Voice and video
traffic is also supported by the MX WAN
Access platform.
High-speed riser links extend from the
network center to high-speed Centillion
1400 or 1200 switches, providing switch
aggregation in large campus environments.
Risers also provide connectivity to
Centillion 1200 switches supporting
power workgroups, as well as to high-
density System 5000BH, Centillion 100,
or Centillion 50 LAN-ATM edge switches
deployed in wiring closets across the
network. These edge switches provide full
integration between the ATM backbone
and existing Ethernet and Token Ring
LANs via LAN Emulation (LANE).
By adhering to the ATM Forums
Multiprotocol Over ATM (MPOA)
standard, the Centillion architecture
delivers direct Layer 3 interconnectionbetween switches, eliminating traffic
latencies at the router. The fully-meshed
topology provides an extremely fault-
tolerant, resilient architecture capable of
fast failover in the event of a component
failure, preserving network viability even
under adverse operating conditions.
