Cellular Layout

CELLULAR LAYOUT

Cellular Layout is a one of the form of Hybrid layout

Cellular Layout was first described by U.S engineer in

1920’s but first implemented by Ohno

Cellular layout attempts to combine the flexibility of

process layout with the efficiency of product layout.

Cellular layout is based on the ‘Group Technology’

where dissimilar machines are grouped into work

centers called cells.

CONTD.

Cells are arranged in relation to each other so that

material movement is minimized. Large machines that cannot be split among the cells are

placed nearer to it Cells represents a small assembly line Layout between cells is a process layout

PFA is a group technology technique that reorders part

routing matrices to identify families of parts with similar

processing requirements

Place the workstations as closely as possible to minimize walking distances.

Avoid operator walking patterns that cross path& Position operators so they face outwards. Operators should stand, not sit. Position the workstations so the material moves

counterclockwise in the cell. Assign the entry and exit operations to the same

operator. Avoid or minimize the use of conveyors in low

volume/high variety cells. Rely on one-piece production. One-piece inspection

and one -piece conveyance.

Similar products are produced using group technology

CONVERSION TO CELLULAR MANUFACTURING

Step 1: Understanding the Current Conditions

Step 2: Converting to a Process-based Layout.

Step 3: Continuously Improving the Process.

Reported Performance Results from Cellular Manufacturing Implementations

ADVANTAGES OF CELLULAR LAYOUT

Reduced material handling and transit time  Reduced setup time Reduced work-in-process inventory Better use of human resources:

Self-managed team, in most cases more satisfied with

the work that they do Flexible resource. Workers in each cell are

multifunctional and can be assigned to different routes

within a cell or between cells as demand volume

changes.

Cells Facilitate Rapid Flow and Efficient Processing Of

material And Information

DIS ADVANTAGES OF CELLULAR LAYOUT

Inadequate part families. Poorly balanced cells. Expanded training and scheduling of workers. Increased capital investment.
