Many caregivers find that support groupshelp them feel less alone. Support groupsprovide an opportunity to share openly withothers who understand and to learntechniques for coping.
To provide effective care, its vital that youmaintain your health. Neglecting your healthhas long-range consequences, not only foryou, but also for the person who needs yourcare. Proper diet, sleep, exercise, and atten-tion to your health problems are essential.
All too often, caregivers place their ownneeds last.Taking breaks from caregiving isessential for both full-time and part-timecaregivers. Consider getting breaks early incaregiving. If you wait until you are burnedout these breaks will not be enough.
Caregiving decisions should not be based
only on the needs and desires of the carerecipient. You must also consider theconsequences of caregiving decisions foryourself and other family members. Makingthese decisions is an essential part ofself-care, which in turn will help you provideeffective care for others.

God of our Life thereare days when our burdens we carry
chafe our shoulders and weigh us down;when the road seems dreary and endless,
the skies grey and threatening;when our lives have no music in them,
and our hearts are lonely,and our souls have lost their courage.
Flood our path with light,turn our eyes to where the skies are
full of promise;tune our hearts to brave music;
give us the sense of comradeshipwith heroes and saints of every age;
and so quicken our spiritsthat we may be able to encourage
the souls of all who journey with uson the road of life,
to your honor and glory.Saint Augustine
