A MESSAGE FROM THE Rabbi From the window in my home office, I am able to watch the
children in my neighborhood running and playing. From
hopscotch to freeze tag, to their delightful chasing after fireflies,
the joy of their happy laughter has been a pleasant reprieve
from the sound of my computer keyboard.
Prior to the COVID stay-at-home orders, it was rare to see
anyone out, much less the children playing in the street. No tag,
no scooters or bikes, only the occasional wave from driveways
as the children were being packed into the van. Yes neighbors
were occasionally seen out walking their dogs, but rarely was a
child out.
But now, with travel limited to essential needs and most people
working from home things are very different. For one, every
single child in my neighborhood has learned to ride a bike, (or
some form of electric mini-car)! One sees entire families out for
strolls, neighbors enjoying driveway cocktail hours and the
family dinner has regained importance. Recipe swaps and home
baked bread is all the rage. At first this was due to limitations in
the food supply chain, but now, it’s become a pleasant family
activity, challah baking a weekly joy for many.
In chatting with many people over the past three months, a
common thread of thought has emerged- all focused around
reprioritizing values. People share that they’ve been thinking a
lot about their lives, the sacrifices, the things they have had to
give up and the hidden blessings that have been revealed. It
seems that for many in this pandemic they discovered the Ikar
in living life. This Hebrew word, Ikar means: the essence, the
inner core, the heart of the matter.
Without a doubt, this pandemic caused disruption of major
proportions in all aspects of life. It comes as no surprise that by
scaling back, eyes and hearts have been opened to see the
world and one another differently. For many it has fostered a
reexamination of every assumption held and provided
opportunity to think more deeply about living life; to assess the
things that are most important: health, sacrifice, childhood,
family, learning, environment, justice, privilege, freedom,
spirituality… Many have discovered how interconnected
humanity really is, and many are responding accordingly.
We are thinking about, and talking about family values, Torah
values, environmental values and human values. There is a
revived appreciation for wants vs. needs, for the beauty and
simplicity found in nature and many have discovered new levels
of compassion, creativity and empathy. So what do we do with
all of this thinking?
As we rapidly emerge from shelter-in-place, some want to pick
up right where they left off in March, but many others are
taking the time to reassess. What will be kept and what will be
cast aside? Will I go back into the rat race, or has something
changed in me, and if so, how can I nourish that shift?
These questions translate to our sense of Jewish community as
well. As participants in this Kehillah Kedosha of Beth Tikvah, as
we construct what post-COVID life at TBT will look like, we must
ask ourselves important questions for the self and the group. As
an individual who has grown and learned much about myself
during this time, what will animate me spiritually, and bring me
a renewed sense of purpose? What do I want from synagogue
life and how can I help to bring it to fruition? What lessons and
experiences do we desire for ourselves and our children that
will bring a sense of purpose and hope? How do I see myself
contributing to the growth of this community? As a TBT
community, what is our Ikar?
These are the questions that I am asking myself as a human
being and these are the essential questions that I am
contemplating as the rabbi of this holy congregation.
As we all begin to emerge from the virtual spaces and reanimate
our congregational life, I hope that you will share with me your
thoughts about how you are feeling and thinking. What lessons
you have learned from this time of global constriction and how
you might share your time, your gifts and your wisdom as
together we grow forward from this time of liminality.
I look forward to hearing from you. Until then, Blessing upon
you all.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR President
Shalom everyone,
I am both thrilled and humbled to be elected as your new
President of Temple Beth Tikvah. What a time to start my
term! When I first began thinking of becoming President of
TBT, the idea of a pandemic was not even remotely on my
mind. Now, it is a major factor in all facets of how we can
deliver our religious, educational, spiritual, social, and
pastoral functions to our congregants. To say that this is a
major challenge for us is an understatement, but we as a
Board, clergy and staff are dedicated to make all of it
happen somehow.
By way of introduction, my Jewish journey began in
Savannah, Georgia, where a large close-knit Jewish
community thrives. My family was involved in synagogue
life for as long as I can remember. My grandfather, for
whom I was named, was one of the founders of an
orthodox synagogue which later, in the 1950’s, joined the
Conservative movement. My mother was on the Board,
was Sisterhood president and an office volunteer. My
parents stressed synagogue involvement as a sacred
obligation. After moving to Atlanta a few years after
college, my wife Waynah and I joined a Reform synagogue
and I was on the Board of Trustees there. After retirement,
we joined TBT in 2014 and I became Treasurer in 2015.
Over the last three years, Rabbi Shuval-Weiner has
performed weddings and baby naming for both of our
children and grandchildren. As you can see, being involved
in the temple is part of who I am. I also want to ensure that
TBT will be there for my growing family.
Unlike many of my predecessors, I have not been a
member of TBT for a decade or two before assuming this
position. Thus, while I know many congregants by face or
by name, I have not had the pleasure of meeting a lot of
you. I look forward to making new acquaintances and
nurturing the resulting friendships. Please reach out to me
if you have problems, concerns, recommendations or just
want to talk about TBT.
I would be remiss in not thanking our wonderful clergy,
educational staff, office staff and Board of Trustees for the
job they have done in keeping our congregation moving
forward during these very trying times. They have adapted
to the current crisis and have shown creative ways of
making sure we can continue serving you. Please join me in
recognizing their efforts!

Rainbow Ice Tower Excavation—A Science Experiment!!
Greetings from my dining room-turned-office! I hope
everyone is staying well despite the ups and downs that
this pandemic and its effects continue to bring.
It was so wonderful to see the smiling faces of our TBT
students and parents at our end-of-the-year celebration.
Just as we began the year with excitement and anticipation,
I believe we finished it in the same way - even though it
looked a little different. Again, a huge thank you to our
team of teachers who quickly pivoted learning and
connecting from in-person to a virtual platform without
missing a beat.
Planning for next school year is in full swing. While
uncertainties exist, and the expression “up in the air”
comes into my mind several times a day, we are planning
for all possibilities. It is challenging yet very exciting! If we
cannot meet in person, we want to limit screen time and
increase collaboration and engagement; those are central
factors in all planning. So “up in the
air” leads to thinking that is truly
“out of the box!” Any and all
feedback is welcome – please send
it my way!
If you have not yet done so, please register your child for
the 2020-2021 school year. You can do this by logging into
our website. If you need login information, please email
admin@bethtikvah.com. As we wait for the school year to
begin on August 16, be on the lookout for opportunities to
stay connected this summer. In the meantime, know that I
miss you all and I look forward to continuing your child’s
Jewish journey together.

2019-20 HOTTY President, Ilana Mermelstein wrote the below article for JumpSpark. JumpSpark drives innovative teen programming out of the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta, and is one of the 10 communities that comprise the Jewish Teen Education and Engagement Funder Collaborative.
In the middle of March, I was about three-quarters of the way through my term as my youth group’s (House of Tikvah Temple Youth, or HOTTY) President, and, as a senior in high school, I was looking forward to my last few events as a board member and participant. However, my expectations for the remainder of the year were shattered when the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the cancellation of, well, everything. Though we knew the year wouldn’t end as we had planned it would, the board acted quickly to develop plans for virtual programming and maintain the momentum we had created throughout the year. For the past month, HOTTY has hosted at least one event each week, all through the power of the Internet.
Our events have ranged from virtual lounge nights to game nights, from movie nights to Instagram live classes, from virtual escape rooms to virtual tea parties. Lounge nights give our members the opportunity to simply catch up, as they would at our standard in-person lounge nights. We eat, laugh, and make plans for weekly challenges involving making all food in only a mug. Actually, that last part only happened at one of our virtual lounge nights, but it wouldn’t surprise me if an equally inventive topic arose at the next.
The series of Instagram live classes has included a tutorial on turning a used water bottle into a birdfeeder, led by our Social Action Vice President, an art class, led by our Religious and Cultural Vice President, and a dance class dedicated solely to TikTok dances, led by me.
Needless to say, members have certainly been entertained.
Our Elections and Game Night allowed members not only to elect next year’s board, but also to play a variety of interactive, virtual games and connect in a different and lightly competitive way.
Though the virtual escape room and virtual tea party have yet to occur, I look forward to watching HOTTY grow closer during these atypical events.
Despite the challenge posed by COVID-19, HOTTY has refused to let it impact the strength of our community. We adapted to the circumstances and found new, innovative ways to continue engaging with each other and with our Judaism. COVID-19 has made the development of interpersonal relationships hard, sure, but not impossible. Finding ways to work around the unfortunate situation at hand has allowed us to grow stronger and more resilient as a young, Jewish community, and I find that these traits will pave the way for a generation of strong, resilient Jewish adults.
Mark your calendars!

Friends: Thanks for all of your support of the Annual Campaign, along with your many other contributions to other TBT funds. Last we reported, we took a necessary hiatus from the campaign due to the pandemic. Donor opportunities are visible on our TBT Website, and we encourage additional campaign donations for those in a position to do so prior to the end of our fiscal. Our annual “in-person” donor event is cancelled and will resume next year. Once again this year, gifts of $500+ are recognized with a leaf on our Tree of Life at your discretion. For those donations already received, you will hear from the synagogue shortly to complete your leaf request. To all of you, thank you very much for supporting the 2019-2020 Annual Campaign.
