Portable music players - before the iPod:

Steve Jobs had a strong term for gadgets like that: “crap”

1. RIGHT SIZE / NOT ENOUGH SPACE.

2. WRONG SIZE / ENOUGH SPACE & DIFFICULT TO NAVIGATE

3. SLOW

= bad user experience

The original iPod, announced in October 2001

Starting point: “A problem in search of a solution”

-Benji Edwards

But it doesn’t stop with the iPod! By keeping consistent focus on the customer – the balance of science & humanities that Jobs talks about in Walter Isaacson’s biography, Apple has been enormously successful. In fact, According to a February 2017 Forbes article written by Steve Denning, it’s actually been how they’ve been able to go from “practically bankrupt to a firm with one of the world’s largest market capitalization in just fifteen years.”

BEGIN WITH ACTUAL USERS!

USE A PROXY OR A MANAGER INSTEAD? ~50% FAILURE RATE

Again, in Isaacson’s book, Jobs talks about his primary motivation not being profit, but being to make great products – or to build a company that made great products. Focusing on real people is critical to understand if a product is great. Not having money as a primary or an intitial motivation? That’s smart!

Dave McClure’s Pirate Metrics

Don’t forget: These metrics of “success” should change as your tools/products/reports and users mature. For example, when long user session time may start out as a positive sign of engagement initially, as tools and users engage, it is possible, that short session times indicate users are able to get successfully in and out, able to get exactly what they need, quickly.
