(Level 1/2)

R071: How scientific ideas have an impact on our lives

Module 2: Keeping Healthy

.

Perhaps the most important thing for an individual is their health.

Just over a quarter of adults were classified as obese in 2010.

Obesity can lead to serious chronic diseases and to premature death.

But with all the energy saving devices that are available to use, this is

slowly producing an unhealthy nation.

Around three in ten boys and girls were classed as either overweight or

obese.

.

Human health is affected by a range of factors:

agrochemicals

Health can be affected by inherited conditions, as well as

disease and even how disease is treated.

So if we are to change the nation from an unhealthy one to a healthy one we must understand how

human health can be improved.

exercise

drug use

noiseCertain medical

treatments can also have risks.

diet

smoking

pollution

.

Medical treatments have many benefits, but there can be risks as well, eg

Even x-rays used in diagnosing illness and

injuries have some risks.

But if we can understand the risks and the benefits we can build our confidence in new

medical treatments.

Drugs can have side effects.

Surgery will have associated risks.

If we live in a healthy environment then we are more likely to be healthy

ourselves.

So we need to measure the environmental effects of human activity and check what

we are doing to our ecosystems.

But in our drive for more and more energy are we affecting the

environment we live in?

.

Be able to measure the environmental effects of human

activity

Understand the risks and benefits of medical

treatments

Understand how human health can be

improved
