Volcano Presentation

Shield volcano

The three types of volcanoes are the cinder, composite, and the shield volcano. This picture

is a cinder cone volcano.

How are volcanoes classified?

• Volcanoes are classified by if they are active, dormant, or extinct. If volcanoes or active they are living and could erupt anytime. If they are dormant they are sleeping but they could erupt. Then if they are extinct they are dead.

• This is a composite volcano.

Why are volcanoes formed the way they are?

• They are formed like this because of volcanic eruptions that blow the tops of mountains off.

Section 2

Why do volcanoes occur?

• Volcanoes occur when there are hotspots under the earths surface.

• Also they can occur when one plate edges below another.

What is plate tectonics?

• They are the study of how plates are driven and shaped.

How do plate tectonics work?

• They work because of the movement of the mantle. The plates are in motion like they are on a conveyor belt.

How do the earths plates move?

• They move because of convection currents in the mantle.

What happens when plates run into each other?

• When they run into each other earthquakes form.

Section 3

What is the name of the place where most volcanoes occur?

• The place is called the ring of fire. It has about 450 volcanoes a year! Also it is home to more than 75% active and dormant volcanoes.

Why does this area get this name?

• It gets its name because about 450 volcanoes rim the pacific ocean.

Where else do volcanoes occur?

• Other volcanoes occur at other plate boundaries around the world.

How is a volcano formed?

• Volcanoes can form when two plates slide past each other or where there is stretching and thinning.

What are hot spots?

• Hot spots are volcanic regions thought to be fed by underlying mantle that is very hot.

• For example Hawaii and Yellowstone have hot spots.

Section 4

What are some hazards that volcanoes can produce?

Some hazards from a volcano are lava flows and volcanic gases.

What are things that happen from various hazards?

• Due to lava flow crop damage is the result. But there is really nothing you can do about it.

What are some volcano safety tips?

• Don’t freak out and get to high ground. Make sure its one that has not just exploded.

How do you prepare for a volcano hazard?

• People who live by volcanoes can get volcano hazard reports to determine if they live or work in areas with volcano activity.

• People who live in within 100 miles of a volcano should also find out what their local officials are doing to prepare.

Emergency kit

• In your kit you should have bandages, gauze, gloves, scissors, adhesive tape, and other things in this picture.

Section 5

What is a historical volcano?

• One historic volcano is named Mt. Vesuvius. It killed over two million people in a ancient Greek civilization called Pompeii. Also it has erupted over 50 times since that happened.

Section 6

What volcano is active?

• One volcano that is active is mount St. Helens. This volcano is located in Skamania county in Washington state. It is about 96 miles of Seattle. It is 8365 ft. above sea level. It has erupted in 1980 killing 67 people and destroying over 200 homes.

• Also people who live near Mt. Saint Helens prepare by having a safety kit like in section 5. another thing is to have food and supplies and get away or get to high ground.
