Calcium, a metal. Living in,

family of alkaline. Comes from the, atin word for ‘lime’.

n 1808, Sir Humphry Davis discovered it.omposes 4.2% of the earths crust.

sed as a reducing agent in preparing other metals.ain component of teeth and bones! Wow!

Calcium can be combined with may different elements to create many different compounds. Calcium can be combined with phosphate forming hydroxylapatite, which forms a mineral portion of human and animal bones and even teeth. Calcium hydroxide is made when heating limestone at above 825 degrees celsius and then carefully adding water to it. Calcium hydroxide is used in chemical refinery processes.

One of the most common compounds of calcium is calcium carbonate. Forms of calcium carbonate include chalk, marble and limestone. Calcium is heated to form quicklime which is then added to water. e.g. CaO + H2O = CaCO3. Other important compounds include calcium nitrate, calcium sulphide, calcium

chloride, calcium carbide, calcium cyanamide and calcium hypochlorite.

Cassie’s Career Choices!-Calcium Carbonate (limestone) can be used

directly as a building stone.

-Calcium Sulfate is the component of plaster, also used, as ‘plaster of Paris, for setting bones.

-Calcium is used in vacuum tubes as a getter, a material that combines and removes trace gases from

vacuum tubes.

-Calcium salts are used to produce a deep orange

colour in fireworks!

-Being the main component of teeth and

bones.
