newgrants–onethatwillbeginaninitiativeofdevel-opingleadersandresourcesforcongregationalcommu-nityministriesandanothertoassistgerontologicalstudents.BaylorUniversityalsowasawardedanotherGEARUpWacograntthatwillprovide$1.2milliontocontinueandexpandliteracyeffortsoftheLearn-ingEnglishAmongFriends(LEAF)communityinitia-tive,ajointprojectoftheCenterforLiteracyandtheSchoolofEducation.

Congregational Community Ministries TheCenterforFamilyandCommunityMinistries(CFCM)hasreceiveda$1.1milliongrantfromtheChristIsOurSalvationInc.(CIOS)privatefoundationtobeadministeredoverthenextthreeyears. TheCFCMproposal,titled“StrengtheningCongregationalCommunityMinistries,”willfocusonfourkeyareas:

whereIcancatchupwitholdfriendsandmeetnewones.Someofthesefriendsarealumniwhoareleadersintheprofessionofsocialwork,insocialservicesandinthechurch.Ialsoenjoyfriendshipswiththoseofyouwhoarenotsocialworkersbutwhoarethe“Aarons”wholiftupourarms,whogiveusstrengthandcouragetodowhatwedo.Youarepastorsandstoreclerksandlawyersandteachersandchildadvocatesandranchersandretiredadults—God’speoplewhohaveaburningpassionforaworldorderedbyGod’sjusticeandlove.Fromsomeofyou,thatsupportcomesintheformofwordsthatliftourheartsandstrengthenourresolve.Fromothers,itcomesasfinancialgifts.Someofthosegiftsmadeitpossibleforustoproducethisnewsletter.

OtherswillhelpussendtwoprofessorstoMoldovathiscomingspringtoprovideinitialgraduatecoursestothesocialworkfacultyinthelittleBaptistschoolthere,whilewealsoworkwiththesededicatedfacultytostrengthentheireducationprogram.

Stillothergiftswillprovideschol-arshipsforstudentswhoknowthatGodiscallingthemtosocialwork,butwhodon’thavetheresourcesforcollegeorgraduateschool.Andsome

Gerontology students TheCenterforGerontologicalStudies(CGS)andthefieldeducationprogramhavereceiveda$75,000PracticumPartnershipGrantfromtheHartfordFoundationtoprovidestudentscompensatedfieldinternshipsingerontologicalstudiesoverthreeyears.PrincipalinvestigatorsareJamesEllor,CGSdirector,andHelenHarris,directorofgraduatefieldeducation.

ThegrantwillbringclassroomexpertiseandresearchoftheCGStothecommunitythroughfieldpracticum. Incollaborationwithcommunitypartners,theSSWwilldeveloparotationalpracticumtofacilitategerontologicalexperiencesandspecializedtraining.Eightagencieshavebeenselectedthatreflecttheruralandurbandemographyofseniorsinthearea.(For more on this grant, see page 7). GEAR UP Waco TheCenterforLiteracy(CFL)receiveda$1.2millionshareofanewGEARUPWacograntthatwillexpandoneofthecenter’smajorcommunityliteracyefforts,LearningEnglishAmongFriends(LEAF),nowatCesarChavezMiddleSchool.TheprogramwillbeaddedtofiveothermiddleschoolsintheWaco

IndependentSchoolDistrict. The$11.3million,six-yearGEARUPgrant(GainingEarlyAwarenessandReadinessforUndergraduatePrograms)isfundedbytheU.S.DepartmentofEducation.ItisanestablishedpartnershipamongBaylor,TexasStateTechnicalCollege-Waco,MakingConnectionswithYouthCountInc.,CityofWacoAcademyforEducationalDevelopment,andtheWISD.Thepartnershippreparesat-riskstudentsacademicallyandsociallyforcollege. Originatedandco-sponsoredbyBaylor’sSchoolofSocialWorkandSchoolofEducation,theLEAFprogrambeganthreeyearsagowiththefirstGEARUPWacograntattheCesarChavezMiddleSchool.LEAFservestheentirefamily,offer-ingprogrammingforpreschoolers,classesforelementaryandmiddleschoolchildrenandforparents.

ofourBSWstudents,CharletraHurt,usedinteaching“financialfitness”toteenagersthissummer.Itwasn’tre-allywhatanyoneexpectedwouldhappenwhenCharletrabeganherinternshipworkinginacollaborationbetweentheDorisMillerYMCAandFaithCovenantSupportServices.Butgoodsocialworkisaboutbeingopentonewwaysofteaching,learningandapplication.

OneofthegoalsofCharletra’sinternshipexperiencewastomeetwithteensweeklytoteachthemfinancialmanagement.The“lessonplan”includedbasicbudget-ingconceptssuchassavingforthefuture,preparationforschool,andpayingasyougo.

Charletradidwhatshehadbeentaughttodoinhercoursework.Sheassessedtheneed.Shesoughtinputfromothersocialworkstudentsandteensabouthowbesttoteachthistopic.Shewantedtobeculturallysensitive.Outofthisnetworkingandpreparationcametheconsensusthattheseteenswouldrespondbesttorapasapartoftheirinstruction.Shewasamazedbythatsuggestionbutshewaswillingtotryit!

ThelessonplanforthedaythatCharletrataughtthedifferencebetween“needs”and“wants”gavedefinitionsandexamplesandputtheseintoculturalandsocialcon-texts.Then,therappin’began.

Intheevaluationattheendoffinancialfitnessclass,theteensexpressedhowmuchtheylikedlearning.Now,theysaid,theyreallystoppedtothinkbeforetheyspentmoney.

WhatdidCharletrathink?“Ican’tcarryatuneatall,”shesaid.“Ineverwouldhaveconsideredraptobeaposi-tiveteachingtool.Ihavelearnedsomuchaboutculturalsensitivityfromtheseteens.Ilovedeveryminuteofit!”

AnanonymousexitsurveyonthegraduatecurriculumattheSchoolofSocialWorktakenbygraduating

MSWstudentsthispastspringshowed64percentgavetheprogramthehighestpossibleratingwhenaskedtheirlevelofoverallsatisfaction.

Asprogramadministratorsandfaculty,wefindthisencouraging.Wecarefullycraftcoursesandinternshipexperiencesthatdeliveradvancedpracticevalues,knowl-edgeandskills.Thisbuildsuponaneducationalprogramthatisthoughtfullyprescribedandsequencedsothatlearninghappensinacoherentwayandourgraduatesemergeasfullyprepared,ad-vancedpractitioners.Theexpectationsarefairlystraightforward:Dotheassignments,takethetests,workwellingroups,writepapersusingtheAPAformat,anddemonstratethecompetenciesofanadvancedpracticesocialworkerinthechosenconcentrationarea.

Wecontinuouslyreviewourprogram,anditssuccessandefficiencyarewell-documented.Onethingwecan’torchestrate,however,istheindividualstudent’sengage-mentwithandownershipofthelearning.Thepotentialofthecurriculumtodeeplytransformandprepareisdirectlyandexponentiallyrelatedtohowthestudentinteractswithit.Formany,it’satransformingexperiencethatleadstoafulfillingprofessionallife.StudentsintheMSWprogramcometouswithdifferentunderstandings:somewithaclearsenseofpurposeandothersuncertainoftheirgoals.Thefacultycelebratetheopportunitytowalkalongsidethesestudents–incasualconversations,men-toringandadvising–astheyexploretheircallandgrowtounderstandthemotivations,interestsanddreamsthatpropelthem.Thisprocessofengagementwillinformtheirrelationshipswiththecurriculum,thefaculty,colleaguesand,ultimately,clients.

TheMSWprogramnowofferstwonewwaysforstu-dentstohelpshapetheireducation.First,studentsmaydesignandimplementanMSWspecializationwithinoneofthetwoconcentrations–FamiliesandChildrenorPhysicalandMentalHealth.Thespecializationisanop-tionduringtheconcentrationyeartoindividualizelearn-ingandtofocusinonearenaofsocialworkpractice.The

MSWstudentscanearnaspecial-izationingerontologyorinchurchsocialwork.QualifiedstudentswhooptforthelattermayreceiveatuitionscholarshipofferedbytheBaptistGeneralConventionofTexas.

Second,allcandidatesforgradu-ationnowparticipateintheMSWPracticeColloquium,heldeachspringtowardtheendofthesemes-ter,forwhichtheycreatepresenta-tionsbasedontheirprofessionalin-terestsandnewlyacquiredexpertise.Membersofthepracticecommunityattendthecolloquiumandreceiveprofessionaldevelopmentandcon-tinuingeducationunits.OfferedforthefirsttimelastMay,thepracticecolloquiumreceivedoverwhelm-inglypositiveevaluations.

Growthinnewgraduatestudentenrollmentchallengesthekindofindividualizationthathascharac-terizedtheprograminthepast.Thisfall,wehave60newstudentsenrolledintheMSWprogram,upfrom44thepreviousyear.Inspiteoftheincreaseddemandupontheprogram,facultymembersremainsteadfastlycommittedtoencourag-ingstudentstoembraceanad-vancedpracticeeducationthatwillempowerthemtounderstandandrealizetheirprofessionalvision.

TheCenterforGerontologicalStudiesandthefieldeducationprogramhavebeenselectedasasiteinthePracticumPartnership

ProgramthroughtheSocialWorkLeadershipInstituteandtheNewYorkAcademyofMedicine.The$75,000grantfromtheJohnHartfordFoundationincludesthefundingofeightinternshipsayearforthreeyearsforstudentsworkingwitholderadultsinareaagencies.Thesestudentsalsowillreceivetuitionremissionforthespringsemester. ThegrantincludesarotationalfieldmodelimplementedbytheSSWforthefirsttime.Studentswillbeassignedtoaprimaryfieldagencyandwillrotatethroughsevenadditionalagenciesinthespectrumofcarefortheelderly.Eightagenciesinthecommunityhavejoinedtheprojectaspartners:AreaAgencyonAging,CentralTexasSeniorMinistry,DePaulCenter,FriendsforLife,HillcrestBaptistMedicalCenter(GeropsychUnit),ProvidenceHospice,St.Catherine’sSkilledNursingFacilityandWesleyWoodsAlzheimer’sCareCenter.AgencyrepresentativeswilljoinstudentschosenforthegrantinthefallAgingandMentalHealthcourse,wheretheywilldevelopcompetenciesincareforolderadultsandtheircaregivers. ThefieldeducationprogramcontinuestogrowastheSSWdoes.Thankyoutoallofourfieldeducationagenciesthatcontinuetoprovidequalitylearningexperiencesforourstudents.Weneedyouaswegrow.Wehave113placementsthisfall,including35BSWstudents,31MSWconcentrationstudentsand37foundationstudents.

congregationalsetting,butshewasn’tquitesurehowthatwouldhappen.Nowsheis.McEntyrespendsherdaysministeringtouniversitystudentsatFirstBaptistChurchinKnoxville,Tenn. “Iwantedtoworkinachurchsetting;Ijustdidn’tthinkitwouldbewithcollegestudents,”shesaid.“Collegeissuchaformativetime.So,whentheopportunityarose,Iknewitwouldbeachancetoimpactstudentsforlife. “IwanttohelpthemunderstandthattobeaChristianistocare‘fortheleastofthese.’Wedon’tjusttalkabouthelpingpeople,”McEntyresaid. Youwon’tfindTiharaVargassit-tingstillforlong.The26-year-old

studenthasbeenonthemovesinceshewasborn,travelingalong,circu-itouspaththatledhertotheSchoolofSocialWork.

ShewasborninCoamo,PuertoRico,andherfather,Rolando,joinedthemilitaryandcompletedtrain-ingbeforeherfirstbirthday.Shortlythereafter,hewasstationedinMun-ster,Germany.NosoonerhadthefamilysettledtherethantheyweresenttoNewJersey,onlytoreturntoGermanyshortlyafterVargasfinishedkindergarten.TheVargasfamilywasinGermanyforthenextsevenyears.

WhenVargaswas12,thefam-ilyrelocatedtoElPaso,Texas.Herparentsservedasbi-vocationalpastorsofaHispanicchurch,andVargaswasinfluencedbytheiroutreachtotheneedsoffamiliesinnear-byJuarez,Mexico.

“Lookingback,Ithinkmylifeasamilitary‘brat’playedahugeroleinmyself-awarenessandhelpedmeattainaglobalperspective,”Vargassaid.“Asadaughterofabivocationalminister,Iwasformedbythepassionatesacrifi-cialserviceofmyparentsastheyex-posedmetotheneedsinthemilitaryfamiliesandlocalHispanicfamilies.ThetripstoMexicoexposedmetodevastatingpoverty,butmostofall,adesiretohaveapracticaltheology.”

DuringheryearsspentinTexas,VargasgraduatedfromhighschoolandbegantolooktowardfulfillingGod’scallingonherlife.Givenherfamily’sexperienceincombiningmis-sionsandmilitary,Vargasenteredthe

betweenthetwo,shesaid.“IfeltlikeIwaswithJesus

whenIwaswithhim,”Vargasrecalled.“ItwasthroughhimthatIlearnedaboutBaylor’sdualdegreeprogram.MeetingChap-lainMooreansweredthe‘whereandhow’tothedesireofservingChristthroughothersthatwasplantedandfosteredthroughoutmylife.”

Vargas,nowinhersecondyearoftheMSW/MDivprogram,hopestoworkwithfellowstu-dentVivianaTrianatoopenanimmigrationcenterinWaco.

“Myheartisforthosedisplacedpeoplewhodon’thaveacountrytocallhome,”Vargassaid.“Socialworkisaperfectfitbecauseit’stheincarnationofthegospel.It’sabouttakingsituationsthatarehopelessandmakingsomethingbeautifulblossomfromthem.”

EdwardssaidhewasmovedthatBaylorstudentswouldspeakoutonbehalfofothersinthiswayandthattheywouldtaketimeandenergyduringfinalsweektoadvocateforfamiliesandchildrenlivinginpoverty.HelatersignedtheHungerFreeCommunitiesActandofferedtodoevenmoretoassureafederalbudgetthattakesintoconsiderationtheneedsoflow-incomefamilies.

congregations.KellyhasworkedforthreegrantsintheSchool,includingthe$2millionPewCharitableTrustsgrant.ShehasaBASWandanMSWfromBaylorandhasservedasanadjunctfacultymemberintheSchool.Currently,sheissocialministriesfacilitatoratAntiochMinistriesInternationalandhasbeeninvolvedinmissionsinSriLanka,India,TurkeyandLebanon.

Angela DennisonjoinedtheSchoolthissummerassecondassociatedirectoroftheCenterforFamilyandCommunityMinistriesinacollaborationwithBucknerChildrenandFamilyServicesInc.ShewillassistBucknerandotherreligiously

affiliatedorganizationsandlocalcongregationstoplan,implementandevaluateeffectivecommunityministrymodelsgroundedinprofessionalsocialworkmethodology.Previously,shewaswithVolunteersofAmericaofKentucky,whereshewasacommissionedministeranddirectedprogramsaddressingtheneedsofhomelessindividualsandfamilies.Shealsodevelopedandmanagedhousingforpersonswithchronicmentalillnessandseniorswithlimitedincomes.ShehasanMSWfromtheCarverSchoolofChurchSocialWork,formerlyatSouthernBaptistTheologicalSeminary,andanMDivfromSouthernBaptistTheologicalSeminary.

Kim KotrlahasbeenteachingadjunctivelywiththeSchoolsinceshecompletedherPhDattheUniversityofTexasinAustinin2004,andshehasbeenconductingresearchwithPrestonDyerontheeffectivenessofmarriageenrichment.ShealsoreceivedherMSSWfromtheUniversityofTexasinadministration

andplanning.Previously,sheworkedwiththeTexasOfficeforDevelopmentalDisabilitiestodevelopastatewideprogramforpreventingfetalalcoholspectrumdisorders.Herscholarlyinterestsaresocialworkresearch,socialpolicy,medicalsocialwork,andhealthpromotionamongwomenandchildren.

New Faces in the SchoolKretcha Roldan-Rodriguezbecameafull-timelecturerthisfallasadirectresultofthe$1.1.millionCCMgrant,whichhasprovisionforJonSingletaryandGaynorYanceytocarryreducedteachingresponsibilities.Shewillbeteachingvariouscourses

intheacademicprogram.KretchahasherMSWfromRutgers,TheStateUniversityofNewJersey,andherBAfromtheUniversityofPuertoRico,withamajorinTranslationinFrench,EnglishandSpanish.Shehasbeenasocialworkpractitionerindiversesettingsincludingfostercare,drugrehabilitation,communityserviceeducation,urbandevelopment,schoolacademiccounseling,andcongregationalsocialministry.Inadditiontoherinstructionalresponsibilities,shewillbeanadviserintheBSWprogram.

Franci Rogers joinsthestaffasaCommunicationsSpecialisthiredtoworkonresourcesandnewproductsproducedbytheCCMgrant.ShealsowillbeassistantmanagingeditoroftheJournal on Family and Community Ministrybeingfundedbythegrant.

TheseareexcitingtimestobeintheSchoolofSocialWork.Wehavenewstaffandfaculty,andourprogramisgrowinginboththebaccalaureateandgraduateprograms.NotonlyareourrecruitmenteffortshereintheSSWworking,butourstudentsarerecruitingotherswhohaveaheartforhelpingandserving.
