Business is Personal (again)

Blending Work and Personal Life

• is what society demands of us in an Always On world

• is what our employers expect of us• is what we asked for when working from

home 1 day per week

…be careful what you ask for

Blending Work and Personal Life

• Raises Issues– Do you friend your co-worker on

Facebook? Why not?– How much sharing is too much?– How do we handle increased demands and

stresses?– What else has it brought up for you?

Brings new benefits

• More engagement

• Greater satisfaction

• Greater freedom

Business is Personal

Business is Adaptive

Business is Adaptive

• As with animals and plants in an ecosystem

• Organizations must fight for survival

• You are either growing or shrinking

• INTENTIONS MATTER

Busines is Adaptive

• But when ecosystems are out of balance because of a bad participant, the entire system is in danger– Over fishing– Polluting– Fraud

Business is Global

• Driven by– Trade– Technology– Travel– Tubes

Our global market is getting smaller by the day

The Souk

Markets are interdependent ecosystems

• buyers and sellers

• healthy competition

• predatory practices help one, harm others

" [It's] sort of a reverse social Darwinism: The more complex societies get and the more complex the networks of interdependence within and

beyond community and national borders get, the more people are forced in their own interests to find non-zero-sum solutions. That is, win-win solutions instead of win-lose solutions.... Because we find as our interdependence increases that, on the whole, we do better when other

people do better as well - so we have to find ways that we can all win, we have to accommodate each other. And, on balance, that's a humanizing and

elevating development.”

Business is a series of Conversations

• Product Development

• Customer Support

This is why Social Media is so powerful

Business is Top Line

Business is also, the Front Line

…in an ideological battle that has been quietly playing out for the past several decades

Business is also, the Front Line

• Control Things or Enable People

• Lock it down or set it free?

• Open or Closed

• Collaborative or Combative

In pursuit of competitive advantages, management consultants and MBA's are playing with organizational models that challenge the

ivory towers of board rooms and the status quo of control

The World is Flat

Boundaryless Organizations

“Traditional companies with boundaries, rules, and extensive plans are at a supreme disadvantage in today's globalized world, where technology changes daily and the value chain commands changes of its own. In a traditional company where people are categorized

into neatly defined positions with their job descriptions filed in triplicate in the Human Resources department, the way a company plans its business can cause it to sink or swim; bad planning can mean lost opportunities, being overtaken by the competition, loss

of revenues, or watching its niche slip away because of a new technology, an alteration in the global marketplace, or simply a

failure to market its product effectively.”

The Two Sides

• There is an extreme view on both sides of this front line

– DIY Digital Missionaries

– Command and Control Fundamentalists

Digital Missionaries

• Everything can be solved with technology (aka technological determinism)

• Blogs will save the world

• Economics of Free

• Full transparency or bust!

Command & Control Fundamentalists

• Micromanagement

• Central decisionmaking, because others can't be trusted

• The social media hippies must be stopped

Fundamentalists? really?

• Fundamentalism was originally coined to describe a narrowly defined set of beliefs in the early 20th century in a religious context

• Metaphorically here, it refers to those people who are clinging stubbornly to an entrenched position, unwilling to listen to any new insights or findings

• In short, "people who stopped listening" (according to Rick Warren, author of Purpose Driven Life)

Akin to "Let them eat cake”

We all know where that got Marie Antoinette

Ethnocentrism

The world is not black and white

The truth is somewherein the middle…

We will find it together, not by fighting each other,

but by meeting each other…

and talking with one anotheracross political chasms, across cultural chasms, across racial chasms, across class chasms, across digital chasms.

Cluetrain Manifesto

“A powerful global conversation has begun. Through the Internet, people are discovering and inventing new ways to share relevant knowledge with blinding speed. As a direct result, markets are getting smarter—and getting

smarter faster than most companies.

These markets are conversations. Their members communicate in language that is natural, open, honest, direct, funny and often shocking. Whether explaining or

complaining, joking or serious, the human voice is unmistakably genuine. It can't be faked.”

The thing about command & control is…

“I know of no safe repository of the ultimate power of society but

people. And if we think them not enlightened enough, the remedy is not to take the power from them,

but to inform them by education.”

Thomas Jefferson
