March09,2012--TheWorldLiteracyFoundationannouncedtodaythataGlobalLiteracySummitwillbeakeyplatformtobuildcollectiveglobalactiontoeradicateilliteracyinoursociety.

Theeventwillhostmorethan300delegatesfrommorethan80countriesinthedevelopedanddevelopingworld.Theyincludeworldleadersfromgovernments,60Ambassadors,leadersofliteracy,educationanddevelopmentorganisations,andbusinessleaderswhosupportthecauseofliteracy.

AndrewKay,CEOoftheWorldLiteracyFoundationsaid,“Illiteracyhasmajorsocialandeconomicconsequencesonaperson’slife.WhetheryouliveinEngland,UnitedStates,IndiaorKenya,illiteracyisruininglivesandislinkedwithanarrayofpoorlifeoutcomes.

“Theinabilitytoreadandwritecanbedirectlylinkedtopoverty,unemployment,socialexclusion,crimeandlongtermillness.Itisestimatedthat796millionpeopleintheworldaretechnicallyilliterate,andmanymorestruggletoreadandwritetoasatisfactorylevel,”hesaid.

MrKayconcluded,“Illiteracyneedstobetreatedasifitisadiseasewhichwea

reaimingtoeradicate.Weneedtounderstandthatearlyinterventioncanavertalifetimeofhardship,povertyandpainforachild,youngpersonoradultwhoisstrugglingtoreadorwrite.”
