The Process

Recently I have been starting my process in a different way.

I am building panels and stretching canvas over them as I learned to do in school. The canvas is coated in acrylic medium and then I begin to collage with found materials on top of the sealed canvas. The collage material forms an abstract field composed of all of the materials that make up my life. Lumber invoices, McDonald’s wrappers, sketches torn from my sketchbook, wrapping paper, thinset (a cement blend) and cement bags... literally anything and everything that I have had contact with, that which makes me me.

Often I begin painting with acrylic paint. I put several layers of clear wax on top, ironing between layers to fuse them together. At this point, I begin sketching in wax and charcoal as if I was working on a giant page from my sketchbook. I build up layers and texture and tear them down again to expose their history.

The pictures grow organically and I wonder how all the thoughts are interrelated. Some pictures grow to an integrated whole conveying a strong narrative and others are far more enigmatic. One painting leads to another but never in a linear manner. I wonder about the interconnectedness. I suspect that I do not really care about understanding as much as I enjoy wondering and accepting that the journey is worth the effort. Ultimately, it feels to me that it is all so unknowable but so wonderful a place to explore. I sometimes wonder if I am a fool in thinking this way.

Bio

“I’m always looking for the beauty in things that have been discarded.” Cupboard doors, fences, the side of a locker, or the side of an airplane all come to function as canvas for Turnbull. His preferred medium of painting, encaustic, fuses layers of oil paints in combination with heated beeswax. His pieces resonate a sculptural quality as the artist carves details and intricacies into the fused layers.

Born in Vancouver, Bruce Turnbull graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1998 and completed his Masters of Fine Art at the New York Academy of Art, New York. His art can be found in public collections including the National Portrait Gallery of Canada, Colart Collection and private collections in Canada, the US, Europe and Asia. He is a two-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Award, a Canadian grant given to emerging artists.
