Association’s orna-ment for this yearfeatures Prospect UnitedMethodist Church.“Everyone knows the church,”
said Karen Stevens, secretary ofthe group. “You can see the clocktower from Main Street. It’s aprominent building that everyone
recognizes.”The church was established by
a small group of residents in 1834.Three years later it constructedits first building on West Street. In 1880 the church moved to itspresent building at the corner ofSummer and Center streets. Theclock tower was built and donatedto the church by John HumphreySessions, a noted Bristol businessowner and philanthropist.Stevens said the Federal Hill
Association has been selling orna-ments since 1997.“After our first edition, from
1997 to 2006, we took a couple ofyears off,” she said. “People keptasking about them so in 2009 we
started again.”Over the years the ornaments
have depicted important FederalHill buildings such as the DuPontFuneral Home and BristolLibrary. But they have also gonebeyond Federal Hill and depictedMemorial Boulevard School andBingham School. An ornamentin honor of the city’s 225th anni-versary featured the city’s seal onone side and the Bristol HistoricalSociety’s building on the other.

By SAMANTHA CRITCHELLASSOCIATED PRESS
NEW YORK — The Santahats, beach background or dressed-up dog in the holiday card photomight be saying more than “MerryChristmas” or “Happy New Year.”The image can be a snapshot of
the past 12 months: where you’vebeen, what you’re thinking, youroutlook, your outfits.Yes, it’s a big message to come in
a 5-by-7 envelope, but you alreadyknew a picture could be wortha thousand words. Now considerthat this card might be the onlypiece of snail mail you send to yourloved ones all year. While emailand social media makes it easy tostay in frequent communicationwith far-flung friends and relatives, those tweets, texts and updates canbe deleted or forgotten as quicklyas they arrive.A holiday card, in contrast, “is
really a chance to make a state-ment,”says Kemper Johnson, visualdirector of MyPublisher.com, anonline custom publishing site.“You’re creating your own greet-
ing card. It has meaning, and mostpeople you’re sending it to knowwill know that it’s your home inthe background or the vacationyou were on, or it’s an introductionto you and your family to a newfriend,” he says.So are you the traditionalist who
lines the family up in front of thefireplace? The goofball who eachyear dresses up her Chihuahua ina new sequined frock? The proudparent who wants to show off thefamily’s football star and best bal-lerina on the same card?
The right photo will look dif-ferent for each family, and likelywill be a different type each year, says Meg Bohnert, card stylist forShutterfly, the online photo site. You’ll know it when you see it,she says. Her advice: “You want a photo
that is `in a moment.”’That doesn’t mean perfect,
though. Sometimes it’s the frameshot just before or after the posedphoto that better captures the realfamily dynamic.Next, think about color. That
means not only the backgroundand text but also the hues of yourclothes or the setting, says TVstyle adviser Jeannie Mai. “Color iswhat will jump out of the envelope
first.”White, for example, is a way to
“hit the reset button” and convey achange, either in look or lifestyle, she says, while peach or blushtones say “romance — that you’refeeling lovey dovey.”If you like a strong, polished
look, consider browns and graysmixed with black, suggests Mai,who hosts Style Network’s “HowDo I Look?”She envisions her own card this
year to feature a natural, woodsysetting with fresh greenery. “I wantmy card to say to my recipient thatthere’s a new year ahead and a lotto look forward to.”Other tips: Black and white: This is either
nostalgic or modern, says Johnson. With the traditional trappings —those Fair Isle sweaters, plaids orsnowy landscapes — your mes-sage is one of a classic, timelessholiday greeting, he says, whilesomething sleek without clutter ismore sophisticated and subtle.
Coordinated clothes:“Matching outfits can do a coupleof different things,”San Francisco-based photographer Jennifer
Chaney observes. “Gallery:Usingmultiple photos
can bring a family together, even ifit’s hard to get them together inone room. “It’s the quick fix ifsomeone is away at college or forgrandparents who want to showall their grandkids,” Bohnert says.“You can tell a lot of stories thisway.”
Pets: As much as he’d likephoto cards to show every memberof the family right down to thegoldfish, Johnson warns that petscan steal the thunder, so mind thepecking order and how that comesout in the picture.
Outdoor setting: It’s often theeasiest shot, has the best lightand it’ll probably have the mosteasy-going feel, Bohnert says. Thefamily will probably come off asless stuffy and more playful.Don’t feel limited to a pine-tree
background. If your best photo wasfrom your summer vacation, sharethat with your friends. They wantto see you when you feel happy andat your best, Bohnert says.If you want to make it feel a little
bit more “holiday,” trim it red andgreen or add candy-cane stripes.
Holiday photo cards:What do they say about you?
AP
The holiday photo card might be the only piece of snail mail you send toyour loved ones all year, so you should give it the attention it deserves.

Christmas tree ornaments hang from a tree at Wojtusiks Nursery in Bristol.
Gift tip— Felt soapThe first time Leah Adams of Seattle gave out felt soap for the holidays,
one of her relatives cut the felt away, taking it for elaborate packaging. Itwasn’t.The colorful felting is slightly abrasive and holds suds well.Five years later,Adams sells hundreds of felt soaps, including at her Etsy
online shop, kneek, or SpiderFelt. But she always includes a tag that warnsagainst cutting away the felt.Adams recommends viewing her Felt Soap Tutorial on YouTube for
complete instructions, but it’s basically wrapping a 2-ounce bar of soapin wool roving, adding water and then gently agitating the wool until itshrinks tightly around the soap. Presto.

Local shops look to lure customerswith big salesthe work clothing by Carhartt, awide selection of work boots andwinter boots and thermal clothingin eight colors. For women, Levi’s and footwear arebig sellers. But the big attraction isthe men’s work clothing that makeideal holiday gifts formenwhoworkoutside or need sturdy clothing onthe job, the owner said. At 75 yearsand counting, the store is one of theoldest family-owned businesses inBristol. This holiday season the storeis offering coupons that can also beused on sale items.Montage Jewelers at 817
Farmington Ave. is offering womenthe chance to be stylish at a reason-able price this holiday season. The
store is promoting the sale on an18-inch strand of 9.5 to 10 mil-limeter pearls with a pinkish sheenfor $121.95. Those who purchasethe strand will also get a free match-ing pair of pearl earrings. “It’s high
fashion,” said owner Michael Russo.“Women should have pearls in theirrepertoire.”The value of the set ranges from
$300 to $450. Russo also has thestrand in white pearls as well.He said traditionally the best holi-
day sellers are diamond earrings butsince his selection tends to be higherend, he thought the pearls wouldbe an affordable alternative that stillleaves a woman feeling fashionable. He also offers a selection of men’sPulsar watches and does all typesof repairs, remodeling and one-of-a-kind designs. “I’ve been sellingin Bristol for 37 and a half years,”Russo said. “I still enjoy what I do.”

LisaOcchipinti ofVenice,Calif.,is a painter and sculptor who tearsapart old books, incorporating pagesinto her fine art but also devisingingenious everyday sculptural uses, frommobiles andmirrors to wreaths
and the “Kindle Keeper.”
“What’s the point of living with (abook) if you’re not going to live withit actively?”asks Occhipinti. She finds old books at thrift stores
and garage sales, preferring linen cov-ers embossed or imprinted with anillustration. The Kindle Keeper canbe fashioned for any electronic tablet, protecting the device while return-ing the feel of a good book to thee-reading experience.“It’s a beautiful combination of old
and new,”says Occhipinti. She explains how to custom-
ize the project in her book “TheRepurposed Library” (Stewart,Tabori & Chang, 2011): Start with
an orphaned hardcover book whosetitle or cover artmatch the gift recipi-ent’s interests and is large enough tocomfortably fit the device.Tear out the inside pages, saving
them for another project.Cut a pieceof decorative paper to fit the spine’sheight and width, adding ½ inch tothe width. Glue that in; allow it todry.Apply three small Velcro dots to
the back of the electronic device —two at the top, one at the bottom.Attach the hook mates to each pieceof Velcro, then remove the paperbacking and center the device on theinside back cover of the old book, pressing to secure the Velcro to theback cover.Add a bookplate or library pocket
to the inside front cover to personal-ize the gift.
FeltedMittens
Scavenging for this craft is halfthe fun: Dig through unworn sweat-ers at home or at a local thrift store. They don’t have to be wool, butwool is warmer, according to StefanieGirard, the Burbank, Calif., author
of “Sweater Surgery” (Quarry Books,2008).Awool sweater needs to bewashed
in hot water (with a cold rinse) withlaundry detergent and a clean towel, thendried flat toblock it.This shrinksand tightens the wool fibers, makingthe sweater appear felted. If the sweater has a ribbed bottom
edge, this is where the wrist of themitten goes to give it a nice edge.Make amitten pattern tracing your
own hand, adding ½ inch all the wayaround, larger or smaller dependingon a gift recipient’s hand size.Repeat, and cut out both tracings. Embellishthe top side of the mitten, if desired, thenmachine sew it to the other trac-ing, right sides together. Clip a smallslit at the inside of each thumb point, without cutting the stitching, to alle-viate bulk before turning the mittensright sides out.
BeadedJewelry
The 2011 “Martha StewartHoliday Handbook” shares instruc-tions for how to make delicate, beaded necklaces with minimal parts. Its simplicity is the beauty of this
project, says Marci McGoldrick, edi-torial director of Holiday & CraftsforMartha Stewart Living.A ribbon necklace is trendy.“A lot of jewelry on the market
now uses ribbon instead of chain, orthere’s fabric incorporated into it,”saysMcGoldrick.Using 20 inches of 5 mm-wide
ribbon and a beading needle, stringassorted beads, from large to seedbeads.Attach a clasp and a connectorto the ribbon at each end, knottingthem into place.Another necklace: For a continu-
ous strand of beads, use 20 inches ofsilk beading cord.Attach a connectorto the endof the cord and threadwithbeads. At the midpoint, thread twojingle bells, and then continue bead-ing. Affix the clasp to the other endby knotting it.
EmbellishedT-shirts,towels
Finally, there are many ways toembellish and personalize a T-shirt;hand or kitchen towels; or a tote.McGoldrick suggests taking a pro-
file photo of a beloved pet, enlargingit and cutting it out of a fabric that
won’t fray, such as ultrasuede. Attachthe silhouette and a twill-tape collarand leash to a totewith craft glue; sewthem to aT-shirt or towel.H.Camille Smith, senior decorat-
ing and handmade editor at HGTV.com, says a towel or T-shirt also canbe embellished with iron-on decalsand transfers.Or cut letters or designsout of fabric and sew them on. Addbling with adhesive crystals to itemsthat won’t get washed.Jodi Kahn of Larchmont, N.Y.,
scans and prints wrapping-paper pat-terns onto T-shirt transfer paper andirons it onto white hand towels fora favorite hostess gift. She recom-mends using a pattern with a whitebackground.“It looks incredibly professional. It
really looks like you got it printed,”she says. The same can be done with nearly
anything: wallpaper, fabric, photos, maps, even items scavenged froma hardware store, says Kahn, whoincludes this project in her book“Simply SublimeGifts”(Potter Craft,2010). Once the supplies are col-lected, it’s a half hour to complete abatch of gifts.
