BOTOSANI (Romania, Autumn 1942)
Thousands of people -from all over Europe- are deported to different concentration camps. One of the most callous and relentless, Buchenwald concentration camp confines Jews, Russian prisoners, homosexuals, and political undesirables. Romani men, women and children are among the most affected targets; deported from different parts of Europe, between 220.000 and 500.000 of them – nobody knows exactly how many - will never return.
Move! Faster
zigeuner!
Men to the right!
Women to the left!
ivan! Voicu! They can't find
out that we are brothers...
Jacob is right, if they do, they'll
kill us.
what should we do then?
Listen up! we have to pretend that
we are not brothers!
Among the prisoners…
arrived the three beloved and famous Roma violinists.
what do you mean?
if somebody asks, we are not
brothers.
Fuck!
easy brothers, if something
happens, we will fight together.
Like all other prisoners, the Roma are disposed of their normal clothing and then forced to wear a uniform. A letter "Z" shines on the chest of the uniform, to identify them as "Zigeuner" (the derogatory way of calling Roma people)
halt!
later in the barrack the three brothers play Roma music
The soldier pass by and hears the violins playing Roma music...
the soldier meets the Commandant, to give him a report about the situation in the Roma barracks.
bring him here!
...
The commandant of the Camp is notified that the SS Reichsführer is coming to the Camp to supervise its functioning; he is expected receive him in a proper way.
The commandant plans an exemplar punishment for the three Roma brothers (and with them for all prisoners): they'll have to play - for the visit of the SS Reichsführer- a German march: the same music that sounds everyday meanwhile the prisoners go to the forced labour.
...
two days later the SS visit arrives.
What are theses
zigeuner doing here!!!??
they will play for us
german music, my führer!
And the party begins
The Reichsführer turns the Megaphones on, while in the barracks the night slowly darkens...
In the crucial moment, Jakob makes a signal and the tree brothers start to play Roma music.…
A murmur gently raises from the barracks...
a murmur that slowly becomes unexpected joy.
