Good Shepherd, Coalburg - Christmas Food Basket Donations (So far we’ve received: $6,852!)
In keeping with a long tradition, Blessed Sacrament Parish will provide Christmas food baskets for about 300 families in
the Coalburg, WV area. All of the food is ordered wholesale and Blessed Sacrament pays for it – about $15,000. If you
would like to help us make this happen, you may put your donation in a special envelope marked “Christmas Baskets.”
(You will find some of these envelopes on the credenza in the gathering space but you can use any type of envelope.)
You may also just write “Christmas Baskets” in the memo line on a check that is payable to Blessed Sacrament. These
special donations may be placed in the regular collection basket during Mass or mailed to or dropped in our parish office.
Good Shepherd, Coalburg – Delivery of Christmas Food Baskets
Good Shepherd Chapel will be distributing the food baskets described above on Friday, December 20th.
They need volunteers to transport food to recipients at the Chelyan Apartments, which are about 3 miles from the chapel.
Loading and delivery begins at 7:30am sharp. If you have a vehicle that could transport several boxes at a time, and you
have a strong back, please sign-up in the gathering space for this activity.
Heart and Hand is collecting Stocking Stuffers - Hats, gloves, socks, small stuffed animals, etc. – for distribution in our
local area. Please place your donations in the special basket/container in the gathering area by THIS Sunday, December
15th. Questions? Call Peggy Musilli: 304-776-6548.
Special Collection - Dec. 25th - Catholic Charities West Virginia
If one suffers in poverty, we all suffer. Throughout the Mountain State, Catholic Charities West Virginia (CCWVa) provides
vital assistance to the forgotten elderly, the hungry children and the people struggling paycheck to paycheck. Annual
contributions to the second collection on Christmas directly impact the amount of assistance and quality of service CCWVa
provides in our service region of which your parish is a part.
Other Items of Interest
St. Anthony’s will hold a Christmas Fundraising Dinner on Thursday, December 19 in the St. Anthony Parish Center,
1027 6th Street, Charleston from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Dinner is $7.00 per person and will include ham and/or turkey,
traditional sides, dessert and drink.
Funds raised will support St. Anthony's 2020 Homecoming Celebration which will be held on Sunday, June 7, 2020.
Belt Donations Sought: The Charleston overnight warming center operated by the Salvation Army and United Way for
use by the homeless when temperatures drop below 15 degrees has a need for belts. If you have any utilitarian (not just
for fashion) belts, particularly men’s, that you would be willing to donate, a bin for receipt of belts is in the gathering
space. If you have a favorite thrift store, perhaps check there for some good deals on men’s belts.
Lay Ministers – December 14 and 15 – Third Sunday of Advent If you would like to carry the processional cross or bring up the gifts, please notify an usher before Mass.

Mass Readings
December 15, 2019 Third Sunday of Advent
Reading 1 ISAIAH 35:1-6A, 10
The desert and the parched land will exult; the steppe will rejoice and bloom. They will bloom with abundant flowers, and
rejoice with joyful song. The glory of Lebanon will be given to them, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the
glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. Strengthen the hands that are feeble, make firm the knees that are weak, say
to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine
recompense he comes to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the
lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing. Those whom the LORD has ransomed will return and enter
Zion singing, crowned with everlasting joy; they will meet with joy and gladness, sorrow and mourning will flee.
Responsorial Psalm PSALMS 146:6-7, 8-9, 9-10.
R. Lord, come and save us.
The LORD God keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry.
The LORD sets captives free.
R. Lord, come and save us.
The LORD gives sight to the blind; the LORD raises up those who were bowed down.
The LORD loves the just; the LORD protects strangers.
R. Lord, come and save us.
The fatherless and the widow he sustains, but the way of the wicked he thwarts.
The LORD shall reign forever; your God, O Zion, through all generations.
R. Lord, come and save us.
Reading 2 JAMES 5:7-10
Be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth,
being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You too must be patient. Make your hearts firm,
because the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not complain, brothers and sisters, about one another, that you may not be
judged. Behold, the Judge is standing before the gates. Take as an example of hardship and patience, brothers and sisters,
the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
Gospel MATTHEW 11:2-11
When John the Baptist heard in prison of the works of the Christ, he sent his disciples to Jesus with this question,
"Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?"
Jesus said to them in reply, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk,
lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.
And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me."
As they were going off, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out to the desert to see?
A reed swayed by the wind? Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine
clothing are in royal palaces. Then why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
This is the one about whom it is written: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way
before you. Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the
least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he."
Mass Readings
December 22, 2019 Fourth Sunday of Advent
Reading 1 ISAIAH 7:10-14
The LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying:
Ask for a sign from the LORD, your God; let it be deep as the netherworld, or high as the sky!
But Ahaz answered, "I will not ask! I will not tempt the LORD!"
Then Isaiah said:
Listen, O house of David! Is it not enough for you to weary people, must you also weary my God? Therefore the Lord
himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.
Responsorial Psalm PSALMS 24:1-2, 3-4, 5-6.
R. Let the Lord enter; he is king of glory.
The LORD's are the earth and its fullness; the world and those who dwell in it.
For he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.
R. Let the Lord enter; he is king of glory.
Who can ascend the mountain of the LORD? or who may stand in his holy place?
One whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean, who desires not what is vain.
R. Let the Lord enter; he is king of glory.
He shall receive a blessing from the LORD, a reward from God his savior.
Such is the race that seeks for him, that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.
R. Let the Lord enter; he is king of glory.
Reading 2 ROMANS 1:1-7
Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God,
which he promised previously through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, the gospel about his Son, descended from
David according to the flesh, but established as Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness through
resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Through him we have received the grace of apostleship, to bring about the obedience of faith, for the sake of his name,
among all the Gentiles, among whom are you also, who are called to belong to Jesus Christ; to all the beloved of God in
Rome, called to be holy. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Gospel MATTHEW 1:18-24
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.
When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the
Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to
divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this
child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people
from their sins."
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means "God is with us."
When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.
