BIOLOGIA MOLECULAR & CELULAR DE NEMATÓIDES

2004

"... there is only one organism that we have any hope of understanding fully, in terms of biology. That organism is our own species. Only we are in a position to report on every disease or toxin we encounter. Similarly, only we can adequately monitor our own physiological and genomic responses to arctic blizzards, tropical heat, psychological stresses and social pleasures. And only for human beings will we ever have truly extensive data on genomic variability and molecular paleontology. The other tens of millions of species on this planet are likely to remain largely mysterious forever, specially as most of them may well go extinct during the present century, along with all their complex biotic interactions. The biological world will then become more comprehensible but incomparably poorer."

C. elegans

Place a penny on the middle of one of your tables in Space; and leaning over it, look down upon it. It will appear a circle.

But now, drawing back to the edge of the table, gradually lower your eye (thus bringing yourself more and more into the condition of the inhabitants of Flatland) and you find the penny becoming more and more oval to your view;

and at last when you have placed your eye exactly on the edge of the table the penny will then have ceased to appear oval at all, and will have become so far as you can see, a straight line.

[E.A. Abbott (1884) Flatland – A romance of many dimensions]
