Spring Term 2015
Infants Visit
Whittington Castle
By Ruth Class 1 and 2 went to Whittington
Castle as part of their topic
Castles and Dragons. First of all
they dressed up as peasants and
walked up in a long line behind
each other and up a bridge where
they had to duck down because of
the Arrows. The children all
found this lots of fun. Ellie said I
loved the bit when I went on the
bridge.
They then found out all about the
castle and what the different parts
were used for.
On the tour of the castle they saw
the stocks where you were put in
if you had been naughty and peo-
ple would throw mud at you.
Then they went back and we
talked about the all the people
who lived in the castle and their
jobs. They also found out about
the food that was eaten in Medie-
val time such as pigs to eat and
they found out that they drank
beer not water.
Then after lunch they did the fun
quiz. They all dressed up as ei-
ther a guard, jesters, servant,
welsh raider, lady or wizard. The
guards had to protect the ladies
the jesters had to entertain the
people, the welsh raiders were
stealing things, the ladies were
getting ready for the banquet Leo
said it was fabulous Maisy said
the trip was amazing because I
loved the fun trail and dressing
up. Oliver said the guard had
their own little hide out. All of
them enjoyed it.

Great Governors Day
Our school Governors were invited to spend
a day with us , sharing in everything we do.
Mrs Weetch, Mr Bourne, Mrs Carman, Can-
on Davenport, Mrs Latham and Mr Briers
came to look around the school to see what
goes on in the classrooms.
First our absolutely AMAZING Year 6s gave
each Governor a tour around the different
classrooms and the rest of the school. After
that the Governors spent some time with the
classes joining in with our activities.
Mrs Weetch and Mr Bourne spent a lovely
time speaking to the children in Class 3
while they were working, while Mrs Carman
had a FANTASTIC time in Class 1 seeing
what our youngest children did.
Mrs Latham
e n j o y e d

the children
in Class 2
and helped
them with
the maths
activity!
Mrs Carman and Mr Bourne managed to
meet half of our wonderful school. Every
class had a chance to meet, talk to and work
with at least one of our Governors.
During the morning they also joined in with
our sharing assembly where they saw more
of the work going on in each class. They
seemed to really enjoy this.
They also stayed for dinner, if they were
able to and joined us for play time. It was a
really good day and we enjoyed showing the
Governors our school. Mrs Latham said it
has been an interesting and enjoyable morn-
ing. Thank you for inviting me.
Defibrillator Training By Annabel and Amelia
School has purchased a defibrillator for the local area and school with money from the PTA (650), School (394.50) and the Talent Show 2013 (135.50). Thank you for your support to help us get one. The First response team came and gave training to all the staff at school about what to do if someone is un-conscious, then how to use the defibrillator which is really clever because it checks the heart and tells you
what you need to do while you wait for the ambu-lance. Mrs Vaughan thought the Drs ABC was bril-liant which helps you remember what to do if you find someone collapsed: D is for check for danger. R is for check response. S is for shout for help. A is for check airways. B is for check breathing. C is for C.P.R. (circulation)

Welcome to Sonny and Charlie
Recently Fin and Hatty got a new Puppy. He is a Collie Cross Terrier, is 8 weeks old and is called Axel. They love him even though he chews the carpet and sometimes growls and bites clothes! He is crazy, jumps and loves his toys such as squeaky frog, blue hippo and grey rabbit. They let him out in the garden but he sleeps in the kitchen and gets over excited in the mornings! He likes to sleep by the fire on the sofa and when they 1st got him he slept for ages on Hattys knee. Fin loves the way he moves and chases me especially when I run and he runs after me nipping at my trousers. He is precious and a good treasure. Hatty said I like the way he chews Indios clothes and some times chews my slippers! Axel has a lot of energy and can even climb up the stairs they have taught him to sit, come, and fetch well done! What a little cutie he is.
Sonny and Charlie came to
our school after Christmas.
Sonny is in Class 3 and is 7
and Charlie is in Class 4 and
is 9. We love it when new
children come to Bickerton
and we hope that they felt
very welcome. They seem to
have settled in well and have
made new friends.
We asked them what they
thought of Bickerton so far.
This is what they had to say:
Charlie: I like this school so
much. The lessons are fun
and I love playing with
friends on the playground, I
enjoy PE a lot! I think the
school is super!
Sonny: The people here are
friendly and I love playing
with people at school in the
playground too. P.E is amaz-
ing and lessons are fun.

Canon Davenport, who comes in every Thursday to
do our assemblies teaches us about God, celebrated
a special Birthday recentlyhe let on to us that he was 60!Everyone in the whole school made little cards for
him with a special personal message and a beautiful
picture on the front cover which Mrs Tudor then made
into a big book. Canon Davenport was very touched
and told us he feels like one of the family. It made him
feel very special and it is something he will keep forev-
er.

On World Book Day we all did very well with our cos-tumes. Miss Gittins was the Bad Tempered Ladybird although she was not bad tempered at all! During a special assem-bly all showed off our clothes and we saw what everyone else was, for example there was the Ugly Sisters and Cinderella. Mrs Morley was Cinderella before she went to the ball and Mrs Latham was the one at the ball .
In assembly we found out the winners of the photo-graph competition where we had to send in a photo of ourselves reading in an interesting placethere were
some really good places. You can see who won 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the Infants and Jun-iors in the photos.
We all did lots of fun activities to do with books and during
the day we listened to stories read by some of our mums, dads and grandmas.
After school the PTA arranged a book swopping ses-sion which we loved because there was lots of choice.

The teachers have all got new iPads bought by the PTA for the classes. We have already had great fun with them taking photo-graphs and playing on apps to help us with our learning. Mrs Vaughan
said the children love the iPad in my class and they love the new apps I have downloaded. There are some really good games to help their learning. Thank you very much to the PTA for buying them.

Solar Eclipse Hits Britain
By Annabel and Amelia
The solar eclipse was AMAZING! Most of us were able to look at is through something: Class 4 and 5 looked through a welding mask that Will brought in, Class 2 and 1 had it on YouTube and Class 2 children also went out side one by one and with their back to the sun they looked at it reflected on a piece of paper from a paper with a hole in. Class 1 also saw the difference
in the shadows. Mrs Vaughan was amazed how cold it went even though it was still quite light. Her class enjoyed finding out about Eclipses.

On the 3rd March we went to
young voices. We saw Urban
Strides who are amazing
break dancers. After a prac-
tise in the afternoon it was
time to sing to all our Mums
and Dads. When the lights
went out it was pitch black
and all we could see was the
young voices torches and the
colourful lights shining on us.
The conductors name was
David and there was a really
nice girl who had broken her
leg and her name was Lucy
Spraggan from the X factor.
We all loved itit was amaz-
ing .
Young Voices went on till 11
pm at night so everybody
was so tired afterwards. We
liked it because there was a
mixture of dancing and songs
and much more. Our parents
thought Bickerton sung well.
We had the time of our lives!

Peckforton Castle Visit
On the 9th march class 5 went on a visit to Peckfor-
ton Castle to see the birds of prey they had as part of
our topic. Joe and Sophie showed us the birds and
told us lots. One of them a Chille Blue Eagle kept
making so much noise and even turned his head up-
side down. They were amazing. Last and best of all
we got shown Elsa a European Buzzard Owl and we
even got to stroke her, she was softer than soft. We
took an IPad and took pictures of everything, and
then we got taken back to school. It was so fun and
we learnt lots of things, like if an owl`s eyes are or-
ange they prefer to hunt at dawn and evening, if its
blue day and if its black night. We learnt that the
hawk eagle was the best hunter in packs after the Af-
rican wild dog. We learnt lots of things and we en-
joyed it, we wrote thank you letters back to Joe and
Sophie we hope they enjoy reading them. We even
got taken there for free! Thank you Peckforton.
By Ruth
Class 5 has been creating
new species of birds. First of
all we had to get into groups
of 4. Then all of us had to
use our imagination and
facts we had learnt, to create
a new species of bird of
prey. We sketched what we
thought our bird should look
like. After that we had to
make it out of chicken wire.
Once we were sure it was ok
and that is how we wanted it
we cut up pieces of modroc
we filled a bucket cup or a
draw with water and we
took it outside where our
bird was, we put the modroc
in the water then took it out
and laid it on top of our bird.
We had to do it everywhere
under the wings on the tail
and even under the bird, so
after we had laid it on top
we turned the bird over and
laid modroc under it as well.
We used our fingers to make
it a bit wetter so that you
could smooth the holes so
they did not show. After
they had dried off we had to
paint it the colours we
thought would suit it. first
the main colours then the
details. They looked amaz-
ing.
Class 5 have also been mak-
ing bird boxes as part of
their topic work. Thank you
to the adults who helped us.

Valentines Disco
Just before we broke up for the half term our amazing PTA put on a fab Valentines disco for us. The infants did lots of dancing and there were competitions like the best dancer and
team dancing. There was nail painting and face paints too. They also had hot dogs and cakes.
Like the infants the juniors did dance too and had hot dogs. They had songs like the ho-key kokey and compe
titions for the best air guitar and the best Michael Jackson im-pression.
It was the best! Thank you to the
PTA for a great disco.

Red nose day was great fun for
everyone! We had a big smiley
face in the infant playground
which we had to fill up with 1p ,
2p and 5p coins to send to comic
relief
and all the
pupils in the whole school
loved the idea of hot choco-
late and cookie before first
break for only 50p! Yum-
my!
We all made our faces funny for money! We all
dressed up in our own clothes and brought in our
red noses if we had one and put face paint on our
faces to make them as we said earlier funny for
money!!
We had our red nose day on
Thursday and what fun we had!
Funny hair, funny faces, smiley
faces on our own and on the infant
playground and absolutely yum-
my hot
chocolate and a tasty
cookie which filled a hole
before first break so
TASTY! Our school had
such GOOD FUN!!!!!!!

It was fabulous.
They sang songs;
they said what
they love about
their mums and

mums had tears in
their eyes and
they all loved it.
All teachers were
proud of the in-
fants.
Mothers Day
Assembly
By Amelia and Annabel
On the 12th February we did Play in a Day. A person called
Guy came in and year 5 and 6 did it. The play was called
Midsummer Night`s dream. There were lots of parts , the
main parts little parts and narrations, each one very im-
portant. This is what it was about, a girl called Hermia is to
marry Demetrius but she is in love with Lysander and Hele-
na is in love with Demetrius so Hermia runs away with Ly-
sander.
Demetrius goes to find
her with Helena follow-
ing him. Oberon king of
the fairies is in a fight
with his wife Titania
queen of the fairies. He
gets his elf to find a
flower, he drops the
flower`s juice in her eyes, she will fall in love with the first
thing she sees. Also Puck drops it in Lysanders eyes instead
of Demetrius` eyes.
Titania gets waken and falls in love with Nick Bottom whose
head was turned into a donkeys head by Puck. Lysander
wakes up and sees Helen and falls in love with her. Then
Oberon makes things right and Lysander falls in love with
Hermia, Demetrius falls in love with Helena, and Titania
falls in love with Oberon, and Lysander, Hermia, Demetrius
and Helena get married.
We had a day to practise, and after, we performed it to the
whole school + PAR-
ENTS! We did really
well remembering the
lines.
Well done everybody
and thank you Guy!

Congratulations to
Canon Davenport who
has become a Chaplain
to the Queen having
been recommended by
the Bishop of Chester.
He told us that he is
one of only 36 chap-
lains and he will preach
at one of the Royal
Chapels once a year.
He will hold the post
until he is 70 and he
has become a member
of the Royal House-
hold. He has a special
red cassock to wear
and has a special badge
to wear. He says its
more of an honour than
a job.
On 20th May he will
meet the Queen at her
annual garden party.

Cheshire Phoenix
Simeon Naydenov, Demond Watt, David Aliu and
Coach John Lavery came to Bickerton primary school.
They visited us and told us all about themselves and
what they do. We were split in 3 groups all of them
mixed up with class 4 and 5 children. There were 3
stations; one was the healthy eating one which we
talked about all the healthy and unhealthy foods. The
second one was the smoking one, talking all about
how bad smoking is, and we were showed some tar in
a jar, and trust me you dont want to get that into your
body, so dont go smoking. And another reason you
should not want to smoke is because you will have
2000 bad chemicals in your body. Then we had anoth-
er station where we played games one group was split
in in 2 so each half could do something. One thing
was we played a little game, we had to try and do like
chestpush to each other and then bounce pass and a
few others and for the other thing we were into little
teams of 4 and we had to do races dribbling with our
weak and strong hand and a few others. Ruth really
got a surprise when Simeon said he was from Bulgar-
ia, she talked to him in Bulgarian with no one under-
standing what they were saying. At the end we also
played a game what we had to do was we had to clap
exactly at the same time as the ball bounces some-
times it would bounce sometimes it would not. There
were only a few of us left when the remainders played
a different game. They had to clap before they caught
the ball Dylan was the winner and for his prize he got
a basketball. It was lots of fun. Then the week after
Paul Sturgess came. First he took class 4 and then he
took class 5. We were split into teams depending on
how many there were on each class. We did like little
races dribbling with our weak and strong hand. The
team that came first got 2 points the team that came
second 1 point. All of us enjoyed that. Paul is 7`8 foot
and wears shoe size number 18! We all enjoyed our
time with him. Then the week after that Holly came.
But this time we went outside, we were split into teams
of 4 although not really some of us went into 5 some
into 6, We were taught how to shoot which did help
and if we shot but did not get it in we had to run up to
the nearest yellow line and back then to the second
nearest line and back all of us enjoyed it. We learnt a
lot about team work.

On Sunday the 22nd March, 9 children from Bickerton
Primary School went to St Oswalds Church in Malpas
to be confirmed and 2 were also baptised. This fol-
lowed a series of Confirmation classes by Canon Dav-
enport.
The children were Callum May, Jakob Diamond, Billy
Bryant, Red Morgan, Danny Mosford, Dotty Wingett,
Rachel Johnson, Gemma Dulson and Tristan Weetch.
Because you have to be baptised to be confirmed Cal-
lum May and Jakob Diamond were also baptised on
the same day. Confirmation is where you become a
full member of the Church and show your belief in
God.
The Bishop gave them a candle and splashed holy wa-
ter over their head 3 times, one is for God the Father,
one is for God the Son and one is for the Holy Spirit.
We sung 7 hymns in the service and everybody felt
proud after the service. It is a proud moment that you
should take part in if you have the chance. The Bishop
of Birkenhead was there to confirm them. Callum may
told us he enjoyed it a lot and it is not to be missed
out on.

Dressing up day was a fun day for everyone especially the infants! The infants dressed up as fairy tale charac-ters like knights, dragons, princesses and princes. Anna and Elsa ruled the day with the girls!
Class 1 did a treasure hunt where they had to solve the clues in different groups and find 6 pieces of treasure that was the right colour for their group. They also made fairy wands and fine steeds. A day earlier they made their own apple pies and on dressing up day they ate them. They also played games with Elsa and Anna (Mrs Tudor and Mrs Latham) and the infant li-brary was transformed into Arendelle. Last of all they had knights challenges too and where they had to de-feat a dragon and make Shrek laugh.
Class 2 also had a treasure hunt but their treasure hunt was to follow the clues to find the letters and try to work out the word that lay there. They also made Drag-on story front covers and made an absolutely SUPER symmetrical shield which they tried very hard on. They also played a game where they had to capture the pris-oner. This involved blindfolding one person and the other person directed them to go round an assault course. After all of that FUN they finished the day by drawing a detailed castle plan.
The Juniors dressed up as people from adventures to
link with their topic Adventures. These are examples
of some of the characters they dressed up as: James
Bond, Polar explor-
ers and Crocodile
Dundee.
WE ALL HAD A
FANTASTIC
TIME!

When Mrs Eccles and Mr Rich left everybody was upset. We gave
them both a present to say thank you and to
say that we will miss them. We were all up-
set, especially class 3 who had been taught
by both of them.
We ended the assembly by singing a song
that Mr Rich had taught us, Somewhere On-
ly We Know. We wish them all the best in
whatever they do. We would like them to
come back anytime they want to say hello.

Our PE teacher Mrs Parsons entered Daniel Mosford, Matty Bailey, Red Morgan, Bob Vaughan, Jakob Diamond, Tristan Weetch, Ethan Goldthorpe and Dylan Cotgreave into the FBL Boys Cup which took place on Friday the 23rd of January 2015 from 9.45am till 12.30 noon at Crewe Alex. The Soccer Centre had 4 pitches and 3G artificial turf.
4 teams were playing on each pitch and each of the games were 7 minutes. The first game they scored 3 to 0 the goals were scored by Red Morgan and Dylan Cotgreave. In the sec-ond game they played St Michael's and the score was 6 to 0 the goals were scored by Matty Bailey, Red Morgan and Dyl-an Cotgreave. They all had great fun and have Mrs Parsons to thank.
Handball was on the 3rd February 2015 at Bishop Heber
High School, Malpas . This competition was for year 5/6
and it started at 4:00 pm. There were 8 teams split into 2
groups. Our team was Dotty Wingett [captain], Lily Gor-
man , Rachel Johnson , Georgie Jones, Dylan Cotgreave ,
Matty Bailey, Danny Mosford, and Bob Vaughan [who re-
placed Red Morgan who was ill]. Thank you Bob.
The team drew 3 all against Tushingham, lost 4-2 against
Farndon A and won 6-2 against Malpas. Mrs Parsons said
the team played very well and it was unfortunate they did-
n't make the semi finals due to goal difference.
On Wednesday 18th March Class 3 put on a spectacular dance linked to their topic which is Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl. They performed at our school and at the Heber! They had a magnificent time including the parents.
The dance was entitled Mr Foxs Journey Through Cezanne. In art Class 3 created the backdrop for the dance by interpreting Cezannes forest theme using pastels and paints.
The children from class 3 made there own Fox masks with Paper Mache and painted them. They all made a big white mountain as part of the scenery too which was decorated by the childrens drawings of Cezanne.
They then dressed in colours inspired by the artistred, green, brown, yellow and orange. The dance was the set to the song Somewhere Only We Go which was a recording
by the whole school.
The dance was about the foxes moving slowly through the forest, resting at the mountain and then slowly moving back to the forest.
At 3:00pm they had the rehearsals at the Heber and the
actual performance started at six. They had packed teas and
they all had a great time. Five other schools also danced
then it was finally Bickertons turn. They were all excited
and they danced really well. Thanks to all the teachers in-
volved and the children everything went very smoothly.

Class 3, 4 and 5 have been lucky enough to go on
swimming lessons at Whitchurch swimming baths.
Every year you alternate between years so each year
gets a term and every Monday for 11 weeks they go
to Whitchurch swimming baths at half past 12 the
coach came to take them to the swimming baths. they
learnt how to do lots of new things including the but-
terfly, the mushroom float and the back stroke even
the breast stroke. Kerry taught all these things to the
shallow end group and our very own Mr Sweetnam or
Miss Gittins taught the deep end group. On the last
day we had a fun week where we got all the massive
floats and we could just play around for 1 whole
hour! We are very lucky to have had the opportunity
to go for these fabulous swimming lessons so thank
you to the swimming baths of Whitchurch from the
whole of the magazine club. We got Miss G to give
us a quote and she said I loved taking the children
swimming. It is fantastic to see how everyone im-
proves week on week.

C2 Rainbow
Dance
Class 2s topic this term has been all
about colour and rainbows. In dance with
Mrs Parsons they planned some dance
moves in small groups and then worked
together to plan a whole class dance to
the song Somewhere Over the rainbow.
The children really enjoyed practising
the dance and planning what moves to do.
They were so proud of their dance that
they invited all of their parents to come
in and watch itand they even had spe-
cial t-shirts to wear so they made the
colour of the rainbow. The parents really
enjoyed the performance. Well done

The new Mrs Latham
Here at Bickerton School we have Mrs new Latham
who is attempting to become a teacher. Mrs new Lat-
ham wanted to become a teacher because of an AMAZ-
ING primary school teacher who inspired her to do the
thing she wanted. Surprisingly Mrs Latham used to
work in a Dentist surgery! And I bet you were sur-
prised about that! Her opinion on the children in the
school was great she thinks they are very polite,
AMAZINGLY kind, work super hard (and by super I
mean super!) and finally most important of all they
make every one smile and make Mrs Latham laugh a lot!
Her favourite thing to do in Bickerton school is to
watch all the children having fun at break times and all
the children playing and enjoying themselves and
watching them smiling, laughing and most of all making
break times worth it. She has children of her own and
in the meantime that is her job taking care of her chil-
dren and making sure they go through a good path in
their lives. Before her job at the dentist she went to
Chester University which was the time when she sud-
denly bumped into the teacher who was the one who
inspired her to be a teacher. Her best memory of our
primary school to Mrs Latham would be our FANTAS-
TIC sharing assemblies every Friday which show what
all the different classes have been working there hard-
est all week. The Reason is that Mrs New Latham
loves these assemblies so much is that all the children
look so proud of their work, she gets to see their lovely
work and that most Schools dont do. Sometimes on the
weekends she loves to take her children out to a thea-
tre mostly a winter play! She loves the costumes all the
detail in them and the music showing how the charac-
ters might feel inside like scary music if they are
scared of nice sweet music if they feel good. She loves
going to London and the characters sometimes go to
London she also likes the atmosphere inside all the peo-
ple booing for the guys and you know the rest! She goes
at Easter and that will be the time to say goodbye!!!!

British
Gymnastics
The 18 children of the Junior Gym Club went to watch the British gymnas-tics, with Mr Sweetnam, Miss Gittins and Mrs Chesworth. We went in the car and on a train. On the train it was really fun.
When we got there we went to a museum about sea ships and the Titanic. It was so interesting and also fun.
After that we went to the gymnastics. There were all different competitions like beam, mat, asymmet-ric bars and the volt. It was really enjoyable and interesting. Half way through we had lunch then it carried on.

We all went down to
Bickerton Church for
our Easter Service.
The year 6s told the
Easter story through
drama and the school
joined in by singing
songs that helped tell
the story further.
Some of our mums and
dads came too.
During the telling of
the story we spelt out
the word EASTER

On the last Wednesday of term the school had
the annual Easter bingo at Bickerton Village
Hall. It was amazing! You could win an Easter
Egg after you got a line, then after you got a
house. Sometimes we even had 2 lines!
It was good fun as there were other things you
could take part in like colouring and making an
Easter garden. If you took part in any of them
you got a 1st,2nd, 3rd,4th or 5th prize and if
you took part you got a prize too. All the entries
were really good. There were lots and lots of
eggs there!
We also played last man standing. This is a
game where you had a random card and stood
up. A number was called and if you had that
number you sat down. The person who was
the last person standing won a special eggit
was really good fun. We also had a raffle and
my ticket was called!
There were lots of people there and we also
had drinks and food and we could colour and
make hats.
It was a great night organised by the PTA.

Book Reviews
By The Team
Class 4 has read a very interesting book
called I Am David by Anne Holm which
is about a boy escaping from a prison
camp, finding a bundle with a bottle of wa-
ter, some bread and a compass in which
keeps him going while he is keeping his
freedom. Class 4 have been concentrating
on this book and doing a lot of work in top-
ic about it, and have loved it! Class 4
would like to recommend this book to you
if you are a Junior as its a FAB book!
Class 5 have read a book called Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson and they recommend you read this book if you are a Junior. In our opinion it is one of the best stories ever. It even won the Na-tional Smarties Book Prize and it won GOLD. It is about a girl whose parents die in a train crash so she stays in the MAYFAIR ACADEMY FOR YOUNG LADIES. Soon her teachers find her relatives who live in the wildest place, Brazil- The Amazon. She goes to live there with them they have twin daughters about her age. She thinks every-thing will be fine but will it? No one knows or can even imagine what adventures wait for her on the shores of the River Sea. We real-ly recommend you read this book; its one of the best books full of ad-venture, humour and warmth. We are really sure you will love it.

she doesnt realise how right the name is. Ras-

ily, and Ellie isnt sure what to do. So when
Grandad suggests puppy training classes she
cant wait to get started. Its time for Ellie to
teach Rascal some new tricks, but things dont
go quite as planned. A fun story for any any-
