Dr Muh.Yusuf Suseno,SpJP

Why look at Heart Failure?

• It is a serious health problem with significant morbidity and mortality

• It is often misdiagnosed• It is under-investigated• It is under-treated• It is an area of rapid development with a

good evidence base

Horne et al, Barriers to optimum management of heart failure by general practitioners, Br J Gen Pract1999

What are we going to look at?

• Incidence and prevalence• Diagnosis • Prognosis• Treatment in primary care• Barriers• Some problems –what do GPs want?• Anything else you want to discuss

Incidence and PrevalenceAn Average Surgery

•Common

–Prevalence 1-2% in general population

–10-20% in very elderly

–Average GP sees ~5-10 new cases / year and have ~ 20-40 CHF patients on record

•Costly

–1-2% of NHS expenditure, 70% of which due to hospitalisation ( in SE London £ 10.2 million)
