Stoddert Middle School was originally constructed in 1976, and it was designed in an
open space configuration. While classrooms have been enclosed by partial height walls,
acoustics have not been appreciably improved, and daylight remains insufficient. Interior
finishes are in fair condition, and show age-related wear. Hard gym surfaces are not
conducive to athletic activity. Level changes throughout corridors create accessibility
issues, and the spatial layout makes wayfinding difficult. Exterior cladding is in fair
condition, and shows some staining. Exterior windows do not provide adequate thermal
insulation, and frames show corrosion. Mechanical and plumbing systems, especially
the HVAC system, require significant upgrades. A back-flow preventer is needed.
Electrical systems are in fair condition. The site is constricted and vehicle circulation is
not adequate. Pedestrian pathways to the school are not adequately monitored.

Major Renovation OR Replacement.
It is recommended that Stoddert Middle undergo a
major architectural and systemic renovation to select
mechanical and plumbing systems. A feasibility
study will demonstrate whether a major renovation or
replacement is most appropriate.
