Bell Ringer

1. -5 + -6 = 2. -2 – 5 =

3. 3 • -7 = 4. -10 ÷ -2 =

5. 9 • -3 = 6. -7 – (-7) =

After you have completed the bell ringer, take out your homework!

Rules for Addition of Integers

1. If the signs are the same, add and keep the sign.

-5 + -6 = -11 7 + 4 = 11

2. If the signs are different, subtract and take the sign of the bigger number.

-8 + 9 = 1 -7 + 2 = -5

Rules for Subtraction of Integers

1. Change the sign of the second number and follow the rules for addition.

6 – (-5) = 6 + (+5) = 11

-3 – (+2) = -3 + (-2) = -5

Rules for Multiplication and Division of Integers

1. If the signs are the same, the answer is positive.

2. If the signs are different, the answer is negative.

- 6 • -3 = +18 -5 • 4 = -20

-20 ÷ -4 = +5 +35 ÷ -7 = -6

Order of OperationsA Lesson in Organization

Definitions

• Order of Operations tells us the order we simplify and evaluate expressions using operations (PEMDAS)

• Expressions are math statements that DO NOT HAVE AN EQUALS SIGN

• Simplify means to reduce an expression to its simplest terms

• Evaluate means to find the value of an expression (calculate)

PEMDAS or Not To PEMDAS?1. Parentheses – Do everything inside of

them first!

2. Exponents – Apply exponents to their bases.

3. Divide and Multiply – In order from left to right!

4. Add and Subtract – In order from left to right!

Samples

A. 3 + 4 • 6 – 3 =

B. 6 + 3² – 2 • 5 + 2 =

C. 5 + (4 – 2) • 3 + 1 =

A. 24

B. 7

C. 12

Am I Right or Am I Wrong?

Add parentheses to make each statement true!

1.4 + 5 • 9 – 3 = 34

2.12 • 8 – 5 + 2 = 38

3.15 + 2 • 6 – 10 = 7

4.3 • 8 ÷ 4 + 4 = 24
