A HUMBLE TRIBUTE TO THE LEGEGDRY

Raja Ravi Varma was a prolific artist from India who the most active during later halfof the 19th Century. He is unquestionably the most famous of allIndian painting artists. He is regarded as theGodfather of Indian painting. He took Indianart painting to the world arena.One of the main reasons for this claim is hisgold medal winning stint at an exhibition heldat Vienna in 1873.

Some of his paintings were also sent to the iconicWorld’s fair, held in Chicago in 1893. There too,he won two gold medals. He painted a total of170 paintings.

Among them, 140 are oil paintings, 20 are oleographs and 10 are lithographs.The image of the Woman-Mother was a complex one. Ravi Varma belonged to the family of the Maharajas of Travancore,

and was addressed as Raja.He travelled throughout India in search of

subjects. He often modelled Hindu Goddesses

on South Indian women, whom he considered beautiful.

Beauty At Its BestRaja Ravi Varma had five children, two

sons and three daughters. His elder son, Kerala Varma, born in 1876 went missing

in 1912 and was never heard of again. Their second son was Rama Varma (born

1879), an artist who studied at the JJ School of Arts, Mumbai, married to Srimathi Gowri Kunjamma, sister of

Dewan PGN Unnithan. Raja Ravi Varma painted his eldest

daughter Mahaprabha of Mavelikara, and mother of HH Sethu Lakshmi Bayi, who

became the Maharani Regent of Travancore. His second daughter,

Thiruvadira Nal Kochukunji Thampuran, was grandmother of Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma Maharajah. His third

daughter, born in 1882, was Ayilyam Nal Cheria Kochamma Thampuran.

Ravi Varma is particularly noted for his paintings depicting episodes from the

story of Dushyanta and Shakuntala, and Nala and Damayanti, from the

Mahabharata. Ravi Varma's representation of mythological characters has become a

part of the Indian imagination of the epics.

Raja Ravi Varma is most remembered for his

paintings of sari-clad women portrayed as shapely and graceful.

The facial expression is more than enough to

describe her feelings in his paintings as a shapely and

graceful woman.His paintings became an important motif of the

time, reproductions being found in almost every middle-class home.Reproductional works
