Message from thePresident
By Mark Fleischman, President of the Marina City Club
Condominium Owners Association, Inc.president@marinacityclub.us
Dear Homeowners and Residents,
I hope everyone enjoyed the summer and our improvements in the WestPool Area including the plantings and new pool furniture. The repair of thedeck itself was temporary and a more permanent fix is planned for late fallwhen the pool area will have to be closed. Little by little, we will be makingthe improvements necessary to create a first class resort condominium, which includes the redecorated café, main lobby, restaurant, fitness center, and soon the pool areas.
Together with our wonderful amenities including three swimming pools, sixtennis courts, two paddle tennis courts, a full service restaurant and bar withwonderful food, and the best location on the Southern California coast, Ibelieve property values will continue to increase. Other improvements arehappening all around us including the Oxford Basin Project, which is turninga swamp into a beautiful park with clean, flowing water surrounded bywalking and bike paths at the north side of our property. Besides that, thereis a beautiful new walking path along the harbor overlooking the MCC’sbrand new marina. Life is good at the Marina City Club.
These physical amenities together with the varied fitness classes includingspinning, stretching, water aerobics, yoga, Pilates, etc. make for a uniquelifestyle. That is augmented by the evening social events created by ourvolunteer Social Committee that is doing a great job including coordinatingthe 50th Anniversary of Marina Del Rey a few weeks ago on a Friday night. The evening featured guest speakers with key staff members of the CountySupervisor’s office as well as the Department of Beaches and Harbors. Ourmembership is growing and we are excited to see new faces joining us atthese social events. I would like to take this opportunity to dispel any rumorsthat the restaurant will not be open on Friday nights, which is an importantcelebratory evening for members and home owners. We are having toomuch fun on Fridays, so join us for dinner and dancing.
errors. The score was 4-4 withAndrew serving. Carlos hit oneof his wicked cross-courtforehands that forced the errorand they had the mini-breakwith Mike serving the next twopoints. At 5-4 in the tie-breaker,a long cross-court rally ensued, then a short lob came up andCarlos dunked it away to givethem set points. Mike hit anexcellent first serve that got toBrandon's backhand whichclipped the tape and gave Mikeand Carols the first set 7-6 (4).
In the second set, you couldsee that Mike and Carlos
wanted to avoid the typicalletdown a team has aftersqueezing out a very close set.Andrew and Brandon pressed, making the games close, butMike and Carlos managed tohold then break to open the set. With Carlos serving into the sun, along deuce game ensued, butCarlos kept his first servepercentage high, and theyfought off break points, using thewind with lobs and deft volleys tofinally hold and build a 3-0 lead.Andrew attacked every returnwith his backhand, hitting heavyshots on the return and Brandondid the same, playing aggressivetennis, however, the lead provedtoo much as Carlos and Mikeplayed quality, percentage tennisto close out the match on theirfifth match point, 6-1.
Great tournament and awonderful final. Thanks to all thebrave participants who put theirgames out there for the world tosee. Pressure is a privilege, thatmakes you a better player. Seeyou at the next tourney!
Men’s DoublesTournament
W e had a great Men'sDoubles Tournament thisyear that took place
over the month of June and July.Nine teams entered and played fullround robin matches, whichallowed for more time on court anddid not interfere with weekendtennis. The contests were heated, but in the end, the top two teamsemerged: Mike Levitt / CarlosDunkerly with a single loss andBrandon Boyce / Andrew Horen, with an undefeated round robinrecord. The finals took place on ahot, but breezy Monday in July onCourt 1. The players came out, alllooking focused and ready.Brandon and Andrew the youngguns vs. Mike and Carlos, the well-known experienced players ofMCC who have played togetherand given us countless excitingmatches over the years.
Andrew and Brandon won thetoss and elected to serve. Mikeand Carlos broke immediately thensolidified the break. However,Brandon and Andrew held andbroke and on it went through thefirst set. In the last game of the set, down 5-6, Mike served big to holdat thirty and force a tie-breaker.The points became extended asplayers probed for an opening andavoided the dreaded unforced
Women’s A/B Potluck
T he women's A/B potluck was a great success againthis year with 14 women getting into the action. We had a beautiful Saturday afternoon with round
robin action pitting teams of A & B players against eachother in a 5-game format. Everyone was very social andfriendly. There was a surplus of food and drink after thetennis with everyone talking over the matches andenjoying each other's company. If you missed thiswonderful event this year, look for it next year in thesummertime and come join in the festivities!
