With all the buzz about scholarships and post-secondary educationBattle Creek Central experienced a 58% increase in the number of applicants
to college and trade schools in 2012.
Central High School students sport their collegecolors as they prepare for their college careers.

Fremont Kindergarten students anticipating their Bearcathigh school graduation.
Battle Creek Public Schools students are embracing a "College Going Culture." Theweek of April 16 - 20 kicked off “College-Going Culture Spirit Week.” Students in eachbuilding celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Carson Scholarship with different themeseach day. College t-shirts and sweatshirts were sported by both staff and students at all theschools in the district, students dressed up with what they would wear in their future careersand high school students read excerpts to elementary students from Dr. Ben Carson's book,"Gifted Hands". Colorful banners adorned the front of the high school proclaiming boththe Carson Scholarship and the Legacy Scholarship.
This year an unprecedented 36 Carson scholarships were granted to students in grades 4-12. World famous Pediatric Neurosurgeon, Dr. Ben Carson will be the guest speaker at theCarson Scholars Reception on Friday, April 20 in the high school gymnasium. Many for-mer Carson Scholars winners from the past ten years will also return for the celebration.
2012 marks the graduation of the first class of Legacy Scholars. Students who attendBattle Creek Public Schools beginning in 6th grade through graduation have the opportu-nity to attend Kellogg Community College for two years with their Legacy Scholarship. The Legacy Scholarship includes tuition, books and even tutoring if needed.
The Carson and the Legacy Scholarships are not the only opportunities for assistance inpost-secondary education. There are many other scholarship opportunities at Battle CreekPublic Schools. To assist students in planning their next steps after high school the new"Futures" office was opened in February.

Valley View Literacy NightOn March 2 Valley View Elementary celebrated a
Literacy Night. The school had invited many guestreaders including Superintendent Hicks to the festivi-ties. Monica Harris, local author spoke to students andparents about writing. She demonstrated how a title cancatch the imagination.
Guest readers read a variety of books to parents andstudents in the family areas of each corridor. Many stu-dents came in their pajamas with sleeping bags for anight of reading and socializing.
Principal Tamara Jamierson challenged her Dudley STEM School
students to read 5,000 minutes during the month of March and in
return she would "ride a horse". The students surpassed their goal
and Mrs. Jamierson not only rode a horse but the students got to ride
in a horse drawn wagon Mrs. Jamierson helped drive. Good job Mrs.
Jamierson and Dudley STEM students!
