Every year it seems we hear Christmas Carols being played on the radio and throughout stores
earlier and earlier - way before Thanksgiving dinners are even planned or digested. Trees glow-
ing with lights, bowers of poinsettias, sleighs full of toys and the constant barrage of ads for toys
on television played over and over - all of this sometimes a few days after Halloween or even earli-
er. Of course, we blame this on corporate greed and their hopes that we, the public, spend early
and profusely.
BUT, think about it - this holiday of joy, anticipation and hope - no matter what December holi-
day you celebrate - is a rebirth of faith and a prayer for hope that is universal in every religion.
We pray for PEACE ON EARTH and GOOD WILL TOWARD MEN. Santa arrives in Manhattan dur-
ing the Thanksgiving Parade and for many children throughout the world culminates with Santa
spreading happiness, gifts and joy. So, we join the children in their innocence and in their celebra-
tion with BREAKFAST WITH SANTA.
This happy event which is now a Stoneybrook tradition is held each December for all children in
our community and for children of grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc., who reside in our community
- children up to the age of nine. Breakfast is a satisfying and fun filled meal of pancakes and a
beverage for the children and coffee and donut holes for the adults. Who can resist having a photo
taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus? We are blessed with many volunteers from our community who
start with weeks of preparation, decorating our Recreation Center with symbols of the December
holidays and beautifying our tree. They come up with games and crafts to keep the children occu-
pied, and they serve breakfast occasionally breaking out into song. We have lovely ladies who
have grandchildren of their own and who love to sit with the children and read to them. Over the
years, more and more has been added to this event and it has become a true labor of love and joy.
It is through our children that we remember our past and see the future. It is the awe on their
faces when they see Mrs. Claus and Santa sitting on their decorated chair. It is the wonder in their
eyes when they hear him call them by their name as they whisper their heart’s desires into his ear
and yes, it is even in the panic of some of the little ones who are too overcome to come close to
Santa, but sneak looks at him while clinging to their parents.

Stoneybrook kicked off the holiday season with our Thanksgiving Pot Luck dinner and it was a re-
sounding success again this year. We had a record crowd of 140 with everyone contributing their
favorite dish. The turkey from Der Dutchman was delicious and got rave reviews. Several tables
were set up outside for the overflow and the weather cooperated beautifully. It was awesome to
welcome so many newcomers to our community. Congratulations to Jack and Sue Barrows, one of
the newcomer couples who won $176.00 in the 50/50 pot. Thanks to all who donated for the
turkey. We collected $309.00. The committee worked tirelessly to make sure everything fell into
place. The Committee chaired by Chuck and Cathy Faust included Dave and Judy Arras, Larry
Dickstein and Tina Vogel, Linda Silagy, Bijan Tabrizi and Leslie Weiss, Lee and Sheri Miller and Terry
and Pauline Mygrants. Thanks to Nancy Lively for the photographs.
Thanksgiving Pot Luck was a huge

THE ART GALLERY Our featured artist for December and January is Judi Daley. Judi majored in art education and has
taught art much of her career to classes from kindergarten through college students. She also worked as
head of the art department for a consulting firm. Her art is called “Paper Weaving”. She uses various
fabrics, paper and small objects such as pieces of jewel, buttons and whatever else she finds to work
into her pieces. Color choices set a mood along with the design of her pieces. Stoneybrook gallery is very
proud to present Judi Daley.
ATTENTION ALL ARTISTS:
Whether you are a beginner or an expert, all artists are
invited to join us. We get together every Wednesday of
the month from 9am to 12pm at the recreation center.

all inspire each other to paint!
Anyone who likes to paint, including beginners, please

KARAOKE is the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Join the fun on December 15th at 6:30 pm.
There is nothing that compares to singing at the top of your lungs with your neighbors and letting your hair down. Bring your favorite beverage and/or snack. If anyone has a song they would like to practice for next time, contact John Over-street (630)761-8669 or johnssong@gmail.com and he will be happy to meet with you. We would like to keep karaoke as a free event open to the community. However, new songs cost $3 each and good will donations are much appreciated.
Grab your ladder, channel your creative side, and decorate your home for the holidays! The Stoneybrook Activity Committee has agreed to sponsor a holiday lights decorating competition due to the request of a resident who thoroughly enjoys the lights of our
community.
It is simple to be part of the competition. Many of us already decorate during
Christmas or Hannukah so it is a win/win situation. The only requirement to be in
the competition is to turn your lights on at dusk on December 16th. The judging will
take place around 7 P.M., but since it is such a large community it may take a while
for the judges to make their selections of the winners.
Categories for the competition are:
1. Coach home or Carriage home 2. Villa 3. Single story home 4. Two story home 5. Best overall
A $25.00 gift card will be presented to the winner in each of the categories.
Winners will be selected by a panel of five judges.
The idea behind the competition is all about making our community a beautiful
place to be during the holiday! If you don’t like to decorate, simply enjoy the beauty
as you travel through our community. Good luck to all participants!
Celebration of Lights Competition
Management extends appreciation to all residents who have been busy cleaning,
painting, trimming trees and generally improving the appearance of your properties. Your efforts insure the best curb appeal and help to have the overall property values maintained at the highest level!

COMPLIANCE... Manatee County and Stoneybrook HOA Yard Waste Disposal Guidelines & Rules
Question: How is yard and landscaping waste to be disposed?
Answer: Yard and landscaping waste is picked up curbside each Wednesday. The exception is any week containing a national holiday. On weeks with a national holiday, the yard waste pickup day slips one day to Thursday.
Question: Are there Manatee County rules or guidelines concerning size or weight of yard waste containers or where they are to be placed?
Answer: Yes, yard waste containers are to be no larger than thirty-two gallon capacity and the maximum weight is fifty pounds. Plastic bags are also acceptable containers. The size & weight limits are intended to minimize the risk of injury to sanitation workers. Manatee County re-quires yard waste to be placed between the sidewalk and curb for curbside pickup. Sanitation workers are under no obligation to pickup large unbundled piles of yard waste.
Question: Are there Manatee County rules or guidelines concerning yard waste?
Answer: Yes, yard waste is to be placed either in a container e.g. the same container that homeowners might use for trash, bagged, or tied into bundles. Each bundle is to be no longer than four feet in length. The maximum weight of any container, bundle, or bag is fifty pounds. The size & weight limits are intended to minimize the risk of injury to sanitation workers. The HOA rule is yard waste is to be placed curbside no sooner than twelve hours before the pickup day. If you have further questions, please contact the Property Manager; manager@stoneybrookhoa.com

Winter will be a little late this year. Wetland changes are delayed because of warmer tempera-tures and an abundant water supply (due to El Nino rains), but the decrease in sunlight intensity is on schedule (due to the earth’s rotation on its axis). Once the temperature drops and some en-zyme activity ceases, then the colors that are covered up by excess chlorophyll production will reveal other various colors made from different molecules within the leaves. Also when the stand-
ing water evaporates and temperatures drop, plants in those areas will become dormant. At that point you will see normal winter wetland communities. Let us take a look at some of the plants in the neighbor-hood that will change color or lose their foliage. ({left} is the Cypress marsh by the main gate on the north side) This is a “Hardwood Hammock” - a shady place. There are 3 different types of these Hammocks in our commu-nity. 1. Temperate Dry Hardwood, 2. Mixed Wetland Hardwood, 3.Wetland Mixed Hardwood. The two wet hardwood types differ in plant diversification and com-plexity. Spanish moss, oaks and cypress trees make these areas easy to spot. The Bald Cypress lose their
needles during the winter, hence the name “bald”. New growth appears in March. (Heritage Isles Way north of Quail Greens Terrace looking westward {right }). The wax myrtle is found along the border areas of temperate hardwoods throughout the community, and is easily identified in the fall by the white blossoms it produces. It was used by early settlers who gathered the berries and melted off the waxy covering to make bayberry candles.
Brazilian Pepper-tree (the neighborhood bad guy) is a non-native to the state of Florida. It is a rel-atively small tree that looks like a wide reaching shrub with white flowers that blooms during September through November. The leaves are a bright green color with a distinctive white vein that runs the entire length of the cen-ter of the leaf. Glossy looking berries grow in clusters that are ini-tially a green color but turn bright red during the month of Decem-ber. It is so prevalent in our area that the entire east slope of the berm behind the houses on the east side of Stone Harbour Loop contains nothing but Brazilian Pepper. That berm stretches along the entire ditch from north of S.R.64 to Beacon Manor Terrace. It is also found along the east side of River Heritage Blvd. from
S.R. 64 to Heritage Greens Way and other places throughout the neighborhood. A major reason for the tree’s aggressive nature is due to its lack of predators. In fact, animals and birds actually help the tree spread over great distances, by consuming the berries and then disposing of the un-digested seeds germinated in the animal's stomach. It should also be noted that our wetland management company has been very busy working in various sections of our wetlands this past year. Contrary to popular belief, most of the work done in the wetland areas is done during the fall and spring, not during the summer. That time is used for maintenance.

BOARD NEWS AND NOTES – December 2015
Where has 2015 gone? It is mid-November, Thanksgiving is next week and the Christmas and Hanukkah holidays are only a few short weeks away and many of our seasonal residents have returned to their homes in sunny and still warm, southwest Florida.
Welcome back, we have missed you. The activity level at the Rec Center is in full swing with new and interesting things to do. Our Thanksgiving Pot-luck drew 147 people Wow! Line dancing, Yoga, Breakfast with Santa, monthly pot luck dinners, a cruise, Christmas parties, our annual dinner dance, arts workshop are just some of the exciting things to look forward to this season. It’s great to live in Stoneybrook.
By now all of you should have received the draft budget for 2016 that the BOD will vote on November 19th. If you can, please come to the meeting, 6: 00 PM at the Rec Center. The Board worked hard to develop this proposal and prepare a workable budget with a modest, but fair increase.
You should have also received a request for your email address and electronic mail recipient au-thorization card & self-addressed, stamped envelope. Did you send yours in yet? It is vitally im-portant that we get our database updated with your proper contact information and allow us to develop the confidential member’s only website section. We need to have your card returned to us. Please help us in this important endeavor.
Soon you will be receiving a draft of our new governing documents, by-laws and articles of incor-poration. This is a complete re-write of the current, 13 year old documents that were written to benefit the developer. Please take the time to read them, provide input if you wish and respond. It will require a community wide vote.
On behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to wish all of our resident families a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and joyous holiday season. May 2016 be a wonderful and glorious year for all of us.
Eugene J. Zeiner, Secretary and Director
Stoneybrook at Heritage Harbour Community Association, Inc.
