Oakwilt,causedbythefungusCeratocystisfagacearum,isthemostdestructivediseaseaffecting liveoaksandredoaks inCentralTexas.Mostofthetreemortalityresultsfromtreeto-treespreadofthepathogenthroughinterconnectedorgraftedrootsystems,onceanoakwiltcenterbecomesestablished.Newinfectioncentersbeginwhenbeetlescarryoakwiltfungalsporesfrominfectedredoakstofresh,openwoundsonhealthyoaks.Woundsincludeanydamagecausedbywind,hail,vehicles,construction,squirrels,birdsorpruning.Researchhasshownthatbothoakwiltfungalmatsoninfectedredoaksandinsectsthatcarryoakwiltsporesaremostprevalentinthespring.Belowisabriefdescriptionofhowyoucanreducetheriskoffungalspreadwhenpruning.• Alwayspaint freshwoundsonoaks, includingpruningcutsandstumps,withwounddressingorlatexpaintimmediatelyafterpruningorlivetreeremovalatalltimesoftheyear.

• Cleanallpruningtoolswith10%bleachsolutionorLysol™betweensitesand/ortrees.

• Ifpossibleavoidpruningorwoundingofoaksduring the spring(currentlydefinedasFebruary1throughJune30).Reasonstopruneinthespringinclude:

• Toaccommodatepublicsafetyconcernssuchashazardouslimbs,trafficvisibilityoremergencyutilitylineclearance.

• Torepairdamagedlimbs(fromstormsorotheranomalies)• Toremovelimbsrubbingonabuildingorrubbingonotherbranches,andtoraiselowlimbsoverastreet.

• Onsiteswhereconstructionschedulestakeprecedence,pruninganylivetissueshouldonlybedonetoaccommodaterequiredclearance.

• Deadbranchremovalwherelivetissueisnotexposed.Pruning forother reasons (general treehealth,non-safety related

clearanceorthinning,etc.)shouldbeconductedbeforeFebruary1orafterJune30.Debrisfromdiseasedredoaksshouldbeimmediatelychipped,burnedorburied.Regardlessofthereasonsortimeofyear,properpruningtechniques shouldbeused.These techniques includemakingproperpruningcutsandavoidinginjuriouspracticessuchastoppingorexcessivecrownthinning.Ifyouareuncertainaboutanyofthisinformation,youshouldconsultwithaTexasOakWiltCertifiedarborist,ISACertifiedArborist,oranoakwiltspecialistfromacity,countyorstategovernmentagencysuchastheTexasForestServiceorTexasAgriLifeExtensionService.

one-handedbackhandhighapproachshot.Thisshotisusedwhenaplayeriscaughtin“no-person’sland”(aroundtheservicelinearea)andreceivesahighballtovolley.Theimportantpartofthisshotistobeabletohitadeepvolleyatthefeetoftheopponentsand/ortohitadeepvolleyclosetothebaseline,sotheopponentisputintoadefensivemode.Thiswillcausetheplayertohitasofterballsotheplayercannowmoveclosertothenetforthe“killerorplacementvolley”.Intheillustrations,DarinPleasant,DirectoroftheATPAcademyattheGreyRockTennisClub,showsthepropertechniquetoexecutethisstroke.

Step 1:TheReadyPositionandSplitStep:WhenDarinrealizesthathe iscaught in“no-person’s land”,he takes the split stepbybendingofthekneesandstayingonhistoes.Hisracketisinthevolleypositionandhisfeetareangledtowardthepathoftheincomingball.Noticethatthelefthandisonthethroatoftheracket.

Step 2:TheBackSwing:OnceDarinrealizesthattheballhasbeendirectedtohisbackhand,hewillturnhisupperbodyandwilltaketheracketslightlyback.Noticethatthelefthandisstillonthethroatoftheracket.Hehasloadedhisweightontohisleftfootandwillbereadytostepforwardtomeettheball.Hewillmakeaslightchangetowardthecontinentalgripontherighthand.

Step 3:ThePointofContact:Darinisnowreadytostepintotheball.Hehiskepthereyeontheballandhiscenterofgravitynowisshiftedtowardthepointofcontact.Noticetherighttoepointingtotheballmeetingtheracket.Thefaceoftheracketisopentoallowhimtohitbehindtheballandallowmaximumnetheightandallowhimtohittheballdeep.Thecontroloftheballwillbemadewiththerighthand,whichisholdingtherackettighter.Therighthandwillkeepthefaceoftheracketata45degreeangleatthepointofcontact.

Step 4:TheFollowThrough:OnceDarinhasmadecontactwiththeball,hefinishesthefollowthroughwithhisleftwristlaidback.Hisleftarmispullingbackforbetterbodybalanceandhiseyesarestillwatchingtheracketwherehemadecontactwiththeball.

Step 5: TheMovefortheKillVolley:AstheballisheadedtowardtheopponentandDarinrealizesthathisshotisdeepHenowmovesclosertothenetfortheputawayvolley.Ifhisshotwasnotdeep,Darinwilldecidetostayclosetotheservicelinetoprotecttheloboverhishead.Bythelookinhiseyesandhissmile,hejustdida“killvolley”.
