Bark Gauge

©

Determines the thickness of tree bark.

Increment Borer

©

Extracts small cylinders of wood from the bark to pith of a tree. Used to age and determine growth of trees.

Altimeter

Measures elevation or altitude.

©

Prism Wedge

Angled glass tool used to find merchantable size for trees quickly.

Wheeler caliperMeasure from any unobstructed sighting position and at any height on the tree-stump, dbh or merchantable height.

Relaskop

Used to take individual tree diameters and heights during forest inventories.

©

Fiberglass Tape Measure

©

Measures horizontal distance.

Hip Chain

©

Measures distance over any terrain and through forests.

Tree Stick

©

Measures tree diameter, log height, and the volume of timber in a tree.

Log Rule or Scale

©

For determining board foot lumber volume in logs

Tree Caliper

©

Measures tree diameter very accurately.

Diameter Tape

©

Measures the outside diameter of the main stem of trees.

Logger’s Tape

Tree Diameter on one side and Liner Feet on the other (unlike diameter Tapes)

Clinometer

©

Measures tree height and slope of the ground.

Tally MeterCount from 0 to 9,999. Fits in hand. Finger ring attached. Used in Crusing.

Tally Book

Use in cruising timber or in tallying lumber

Dot Grid• Dot grids

• A transparency with a dot grid is placed over the airphoto or map

• Each dot represents a certain area, dependant on the scale of the airphoto or map

• Dots are counted and multiplied by the scale dependent conversion factor to determine acreage of a stand

• Very fast, but not very accurate

Chainsaw

©

Manually felling trees, delimbing and bucking.

Safety Hard Hat

©

Combination hard hat, ear and eye protection required in logging.

Safety Glasses

©

Personal protective equipment used to protect the eyes from debris an impact.

Chainsaw Chaps

©

Reduces impact of running chainsaws, protecting workers.

Backpack Fire Pump

Manually operated water pump for fighting forest fires.

©

Drip Torch

©

Starts controlled prescribed burns in forests and prairies.

Fire Rake

©

Removes leaf litter and duff to create fire lines.

Fire Swatter

©

Extinguishes slow spreading ground fires.

Fire Weather Kit

©

Instruments used to measure weather conditions and determine danger risk levels for forest fires.

Plastic Flagging

©

Used to mark an area or object (ex. flag a tree).

Cant Hook

©

Used to roll or turn logs.

Pulaski Forester Axe

©

An axe and grubbing hoe tool that can trench and cut roots commonly used in fighting wildlfires.

Tree Planting Bar

Tool used to create a narrow opening in the ground for planting bare-root tree seedlings.

Tree Marking Gun

©

Sprays paint on trees to mark boundaries and sale trees.

Hypo-Hatchet

Kills undesirable trees by penetrating into sapwood and depositing a herbicide their (Shot for trees…Poison in this case) .

StereoscopeLand is seen in three-dimension and all objects stand out. Height can be observed in even the smallest object with great detail.

Planimeter

©

Used to determine acreage from a map by tracing the perimeter on a scaled map.

Hand Compass

Staff Compass

Traditional compass used to survey forests and fields.

Survey Instrument (some type)

Flow/Current Meter

It measures the velocity (speed) of flowing, stream, irrigation canal, or storm water run off. The meter consists of a impeller on

the end of a sampling rod. Water Velocity is

calculated based on the speed that the impeller

turns when its inserted in to the water. Velocity is

recorded in feet per second (fps).

pH Meter

An electronic device with a sensor that

indicates if a solution is alkaline or a acidic solution. A pH of 7 indicates that the

substance is neutral.

Denisomenter

Data Recorder

Data Recorders or Loggers store daily data in forests like temperature, relative humidity, and light intensity. Helps foresters guess when forest fires are more likely.

Water Sampler

• A plastic chamber with spring-loaded ends that can be closed remotely. The sampler is attached to a rope and lowered to the desired depth. Triggering the device seals in a water sample. The same provides information and other characteristics of the water sample at the tested water depth

Water Test Kits

• Contains al the materials to analyze for nitrate, phosphorus, pH, carbon dioxide, chlorides, ammonia, sulfide, silica, hardness, and alkalinity.

Soil Sampler

Soil Test Kit

• The kit may include plastic tubes, solutions, reagents, sample bags, instructions, and color charts for comparing results. Foresters may use test kits in the field but the best results, samples should be submitted to a lab for a complete analysis.

Field Microscope

Similar to a hand lens. Instead of providing a

10x or 14x magnification power, the field microscope

provides a 25x or 30x power.

Plant Press

A wooden frame with straps, used to press

leaves. Leaves are placed between two sheets of

blotter paper, stacked and secured in the frame. The

straps are tightened compressing the leaf

material. The plant material dries and can be mounted in a protective case in a

few days.
