Welcome to the Bonifas
Borderland Arts & Northern Exposure XX Exhibits
Borderland Arts presents its fourth annual exhibit at The William Bonifas Fine Arts Center in Escanaba, MI. It will run concurrently with the Northern Exposure XX exhibition. The simultaneous presentations open on Thursday, November 7, with a public reception from 7 to 9 PM, ET. The Borderland Arts Exhibit concludes on December 18; Northern Exposure closes on December 31. The 20th Northern Exposure is a juried regional competition supported by the Bonifas, encouraging and showcasing Upper Peninsula artists and their work, reflecting the contemporary creativity of the U.P. Several Borderland Arts members have been accepted into Northern Exposure. Northern Exposure artwork can be viewed in the Powers Gallery. The adjacent Studio Gallery will feature the invitational Borderland Arts exhibit, a diverse presentation in a wide range of media, including oil paintings, watercolor, acrylic, carvings, and crafts. The Bonifas was incorporated in 1974, and has become the regional hub for cultural activities and educational programs. The facility includes upper and lower galleries and art studios, a pottery workshop, a library, and a theater. It is located in downtown Escanaba, just off Ludington Street at 700 First Avenue South. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 AM to 5:30 PM, and Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM, ET.

A wide-ranging and eclectic variety of outdoor
art abounds throughout the Borderland area. This
is the first in a series highlighting these creative
three-dimensional pieces.
Outdoor Art Located just outside the Dickinson County Library, at the corner of Iron Mountain Street and East A Street, is the delightfully whimsical “Spring Break” bronze sculpture. It is the work of the late sculptor Jerry Joslin. In an interview with the Seattle Times, Joslin is quoted as saying, in reference to his life-size works, “We’re looking for meaning, hidden meaning sometimes, allegory, a metaphor, that you can read into a piece of art on several levels. The greatest pieces are all that way. That’s poetry.” Purchase of the “Spring Break” sculpture was made possible through the generosity of the August Lilja Memorial Trust Fund. The fund was established in 1999 by Madge Lilja in memory of her husband August Lilja. Since then, the fund has donated more than $400,000 toward beautification projects in Iron Mountain. The Dickinson County Library also benefits every year from the Lilja Fund which purchases books on nutrition, linguistics, basic economics and preventative medicine. Jerry Joslin died in 2007, but his son, Sergei Joslin, carries on the legacy of his father. To view the body of work of the extremely talented Joslins, go to www.joslinstudios.com.
Ironland at the Crystal Theatre
Ironland appears at the Crystal Theatre in Crystal Falls on Sunday, November 3, at 3 pm CT. The band plays music from the 50’s and 60’s through today’s pop hits. Harnessing an energetic live atmosphere or softly serenading a peaceful evening, Ironland is not your average band. Ironland thrives on driving strong three-part harmonies and rotating instruments ranging from mandolins and lap steel guitars to big baritone and electric guitars. Seth Waters, the youngest band member, is a multi-instrument talent who has played professionally from Chicago to California and beyond. Few music lovers in and around the western UP have not heard of Larry Ketola. He is a fine vocalist and acoustic guitar picker. Fingerstyle guitarist and philosopher, Dennis Phillips, is the oldest member. When asked his age, he replies, “I’m on my eleventh president, you figure it out.
Dynamic Duo Exhibit Continues At Bay College West
A truly unique exhibit of paintings by two Borderland Arts members is at Bay College West in Iron Mountain through November 15. Melisse Carr and Gail Stanek titled their plein air paintings, “Side by Side: Two Sets of Eyes”. They created their paintings together at various locales in the UP and northern Wisconsin. This extraordinary exhibit shows their individual styles and interpretations of the same or similar locations. The exhibit has been enthusiastically received beginning with the opening reception on October 15. Music was presented by Tammie Carr on her violin and Miriam Edwards on her cello. The exhibit is part of an ongoing series under the auspices of Instructor Shelley Danielson.

Finding Art In Unexpected Places
Craftsmanship and commerce meet in a most unusual way: eyeglass
frames. Optometrist Dr. Nelson Hassell—a Borderland Arts member
and sponsor—recently introduced us to frames partially covered in
handwoven basket wicker. These unusual creations are produced in
collaboration with a collective of basket members in France, where
they’ve practiced their craft for nearly 1,000 years.
From willow-growing plantations, to soaking tanks and dry bins,
the willow strips are triple split, cut to correct thickness in 7 or 8
steps, and put into dye baths for tinting. Beginning simply for easy
adjustment, the weaving becomes more complex. It takes about 15
minutes for an expert weaver to produce a pair of temples.
Dr. Hassell will be hosting his Vision Source Trunk Show during
Iron Mountain’s “Girls Night Out”. The Show, with refreshments,
will be located in the Braumart Theatre Lobby on Thursday,
November 14, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm CT.
“L’Art de l’Osier” is made up of wicker workers
in Fayl Billot, the capital of basket making in
Champagne-Ardenne, France. To view a video

Zentangle Comes To Borderland
Zentangle is an easy-to-lean, fun
and relaxing way of creating art by
drawing structured patterns. For
those who label themselves as
‘artistically challenged’, it has been
said that Zentangle helps to increase
focus, lessen stress, and provides
creative satisfaction.
Sisters Cari Raboin and Cathy
Staeven give Zentangle workshops
at the Country Inn and Suites in
Iron Mountain. The next is
Saturday, November 23 at 10 am

Rabbit Island: Works & Research
This exhibition is about the 91-acre
forested island which serves as a
platform for art, science, preservation,
and recreation. Rabbit Island is three
miles east of the Keweenaw Peninsula.
It has never been developed or
subdivided. Bald eagles and great blue
herons nest in the trees, and surrounding
waters provide habitat for lake trout and
salmon. Since 2010, the residency
program at Rabbit Island has welcomed
over fifty artists, designers, musicians,
writers, and other creative thinkers.
Illustrators 55: The Society of
Illustrators Travel Show
Now in its 55th
year, the show features
the most outstanding works created
throughout this year. The Illustrators
Annual is open to artists world wide; and
a jury of professional illustrators and art
directors select pieces from thousands
submitted.
Both exhibitions at Northern Michigan
University’s DeVos Art Museum run
through November 17.
