STEP 1:ALWAYS THINK LIKE A KID…

Kids rooms are for KIDS not adults!

Hang things at a “kids” level

Make shelves low and easily accessible for kids

Keep things labeled or add pictures for young children, so they always where things go

Keep it colorful!!! Let them create things to hang on the walls, ask for their input…

STEP 2:WORK WITH A CLEAN SLATE…

Remove all the items from shelves, closets and drawers to give yourself a clean slate to work with

Take ALL items out of the room and sort them into “like” items in a hallway or nearby room

Remove toys your children no longer play with or clothes they no longer wear.

Fix items that are damaged or in disrepair, be honest with your self, don’t keep them if you won’t fix them!

STEP 3:ELIMINATE & EVALUATE… Eliminate items you don’t want to go back into the

space…this means PURGE!!!

Give yourself permission to throw things away or store them for your next child

Evaluate which items are seasonal items and consider creating a toy rotation system

Evaluate how each space needs to function for your child within their room

STEP 4:SORT, SORT, SORT… Sort “like” things together, using empty laundry

baskets, boxes or just make piles on the floor

Put sticky notes on piles identifying what each item is for (i.e., seasonal clothes, crafts, legos, barbies, school items, CDs, etc.)

Make a separate pile for items to donate or sell, and items to repair or replace

MISCELLANEOUS is not one of your categories!

STEP 5:ORGANIZE WITH BINS…

Bins are a NECESSITY for proper organizing…don’t skimp on the bins!!!

They define your area, as well as limit the amount of items you can keep, and force you to keep your space organized.

After emptying your space, take measurements then go shopping!!!

Find the appropriate bins that will best utilize the space, and function according to how you will use them. (open bins vs. lids; canvas vs. clear, etc.)

STEP 6:MAKE IT FUN…

Keep it simple, keep it clean…and keep it labeled!!!

This will keep it FUN and not over-stimulate your child with overwhelming choices and colors

Add fun textures and colors to their rooms, that include things they love and colors they like!!! (Pick three colors and stick with those)

Choose things that create activities and allow ways they can express themselves…

STEP 7:EVERYTHING HAS A PLACE… Remember MISCELLANEOUS is not a category

Assign a place for everything, set aside things that you aren’t sure of and decide if they are necessary to keep.

Make the initial investment to set up the “system” Then LABEL, LABEL, LABEL…

And finally, spend just 15 minutes each night with your child picking up their room…start young and be consistent! (It will save you long hours of organizing if you can just keep it maintained…And not have to hire me!!!)
