JAMES J. KOELBL, D.D.S., M.S., M.J.
Dr. Koelbl earned a D.D.S. from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, and an M.S. in Oral Biology and an M.J. in Health Law from Loyola University. Following dental school, he entered private practice in general dentistry in the Chicago area and has practiced full- and part-time for over 20 years in urban and rural settings. He has held various academic positions at seven universities, including as GPR Program Director, Department Chair, Assistant Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. He also served for five years as an Associate Executive Director for the American Dental Association (ADA), with responsibility for the Divisions of Education, Science and Dental Practice.
Dr. Koelbl served for several years as a site visit chair for the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), and later as an ADEA appointee to the Commission, where he was vice chair and chair. He
was a member of the ADA Committee on Specialty Recognition, the ADA Task Force to Review CODA, the ADA-CODA Joint Task Force on International Accreditation, and the CODA Task Force to Develop Accreditation Standards for New Oral Health Providers. He also served on the Executive Boards of the West Virginia Dental Association, the California Dental Association Foundation, the Tri-County Dental Society (CA), and the Maine Dental Association, among other volunteer activities.
He has been actively involved with ADEA for many years, including as an officer on the then AADS Section on Admissions and as a member of the AADR-ADEA Oral Health National Advocacy Committee. He chaired several ADEA committees, including the ADEA Legislative Advisory Committee, the Task Force to Develop Guiding Principles for Health Care Reform, and the Task Force on the Education of New Oral Health Professionals. He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists, and is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon.
Dr. Koelbl also served for 15 years as a dental dean at three schools, first at West Virginia University School of Dentistry and then as Founding Dean at both Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine and the University of New England College of Dental Medicine (UNE-CDM). He was Provost and Senior Vice President of UNE for four years, and upon the retirement of the university president, returned to UNE-CDM as Executive Associate Dean. In January 2019, Dr. Koelbl joined the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences as Vice Provost for Oral Health Initiatives. In that role, he is helping to conduct a feasibility study for establishing a College of Dental Medicine on the university’s Joplin campus to serve the rural regions of southwest Missouri, northwest Arkansas, northeast Oklahoma and southeast Kansas.
